Mallard on Integration

Never let it be said that I don’t give kudos when kudos is warranted.

Trevor Mallard has posted on Red Alert a little post about his continued support for integration of private schools and why he opposes the PPTA in their drive to shut down integration.

The PPTA want to close the door on schools wanting to integrate.

I think that to legislate to do that would result in a rush while the legislation was processed.  I also think that it is wrong. Private schools are very cheap on the taxpayer, are needed as part of the network in some cities and in some cases are either innovative or fulfil specific cultural needs. Exterminating them or integrated schools might sound great rhetoric but it doesn’t make good policy sense.

Good on Trev for standing up to the teacher unions, he may get some stcik for that though with the Labour caucus made up of a whole lot of failed teachers…..including him. Though with posts like that he really is looking like real leadership potential in the face of Goff’s failings.

PPTA has had nine years to try and shut down integration. Of course PPTA do not even address the problem of what would happen if say Dio, St Cuths, Kings and St Kents all closed doors simultaneously. There would be chaos. The Government would need to squeeze the education budget hard to provide and run replacement schools (in containers perhaps).

It would be a similar problem to what triggered integration. The Catholic school system was once run by monks and nuns, and were relatively cheap to run as the monks and nuns only needed lodgings and food. However in the 1970's the numbers taking vows dwindled and Catholic schools had to hire more and more lay teachers on normal salaries. The Government pretty well had to pay for them which got up PPTA's noses even then. Hence the integration scheme was to keep the Catholic schools going while appeasing the PPTA. Catholics did not mind as long as they could continue teaching religion in their schools. Catholics are a particular political force – homilies delivered before the election can have a significant effect.

Hmm.. Trev's really trying to up his profile and appeal to the level headed and swing voters.
He's been on the slide as far as personal votes go since he became Hutt South's MP in 1996.
I think he's genuinely spooked by the Quinnster.
Seems to post a lot on Him

The PPTA are talking a load of ideological claptrap, and of course there is no substance to their claims. They just hate religion and freedom of choice and they won't get anywhere. Trevor's NZH link is broken but I found this on the issue Time to shut door on private schools, says teachers' union

"By commanding higher school donations, these institutions are able to employ extra teachers and reduce class sizes, the paper says."
    - Oh no, we can't have extra teachers and smaller class sizes, now, can we? Why does jealousy so consume the PPTA? Why do unions always prefer to bring everyone down to the lowest level rather than lift them up?

"Often the new integrated schools are either small or have the effect of decreasing rolls at surrounding schools, making them less viable."
    - Find me a teacher who wouldn't prefer a smaller sized class.

[Part 2 continued below since this site said my comment was too long]

    [Continued from above]

"She said private schools should be able to manage their costs in ways that state schools were required to, for example by reducing staff or the breadth of subjects offered."
    - and again the PPTA advocating the dumbing down of NZ children.

"Not only should no further schools be able to become integrated, but the funding given to existing state-integrated schools should be looked at and should not be "unduly privileged"."
    - and now the hatred for Catholism and other faiths involved in integrated schools rears its ugly head.

Like I said, just a load of ideological nonsense from the PPTA.
