Is anyone else bemused by the irony of a boxer who makes his living by smacking the crap out of all comers is suddenly the poster bot for the anti-smacking brigade?

This is actually not funny. It remains legal for him to punch people in the ring but parents can’t smack a child on the bum at all.

    Yep I bet David was brought in and fed some line that this will stop the bashings..
    But anybody with a brain knows this law targets the wrong crowd.
    You really want to crack down on child abusers start looking at the drop kicks that don't feed their kids
    breakfast or lunch.

    The Clark- Key amendment specifically allows reasonable force to be used for prevention.

    Walking into the path of traffic- a clip over the ear.

    Not having a tidy room- you can be prosecuted if you assault your child

    This law will ***not stop a single case of child abuse!***
    The people who this law targets ARE NOT the "dangerous ones" anyway!
    The people who do not give a shit about this law ***will keep on whacking their children*** with jug cords, bits of wood etc. This law will do nothing whatsoever to prevent that.
    All that you will see will be the good parents hauled into court for giving Jimmy two whacks on the bum. They will be used as trophies by the anti-smacking brigade, as "proof" that the law is "working".
    The govt should be aiming to PREVENT child abuse in the first place.
    Oh, but that would mean targetting those people who actually **commit** most of it. People of certain ethnic groups, and "oooo… we mustn't do that". Too bad for the kids – sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.

    So he says such punishment is "a final resort only"? He thinks a smack IS permissable? He is clearly suffering from the same ambivalence as Key and Bradford. Meanwhile real child abuse goes unchecked.
