Collins puts liberal panty-waists on notice

Judith Collins has an opinion piece in the NZ Herald and in her indomitable way puts liberal panty-waists like “FIGJAM” Power on notice that at least one of our politicians is staying in touch with the people in the street.

Time and again, victims of crime have told me they feel let down by a system that seems to put greater emphasis on the rights of offenders than victims.

People expect safe communities, where they can walk the streets without the threat of violence or intimidation, where they can sleep at night knowing their families are safe in their homes, where there is respect for property, people and the law.

These things are among the most fundamental obligations of any government. I believe we need to revisit the basic principles of punishment and reform.

As far as I am concerned, Offenders have no rights except the right to be housed and fed. We seriously do need to look at our Justice system.

In this country we have many people who have made a thriving industry out of making excuses for criminals.

In the past decade these people have overwhelmed the debate on law and order with their views on the rights of offenders.

By making excuses for criminals, these people send a very strong signal that crime is acceptable in our communities, that it is an accepted fact of life.

One thing I do not understand is how you can tell someone whose life has been torn apart by crime that it is acceptable.

Recently, a senior judge told me that he believed there was “far too much emphasis on victims in our courts at the moment”.

That Judge should be sacked. it is their job to protect society by putting crims away, not dishing out big hugs and cuddles. Collins is right, making excuses for criminals victimises the victim al over again. This is one of the reasons I set up SHAME. To stop people making excuses and hiding from the awful crimes that they committ.

For every crime there are victims like Leigh and her family, and for justice to be truly done it must strive to bring peace and closure to those victims. I believe it is time to reclaim a few basic ideas of what justice is and what it is supposed to do.

The public expects the system – first and foremost – to punish those who have broken the law. Punishment for serious crime in the majority of cases should be harsh, because anything less fails to acknowledge that victims of crime are never truly released from their sentences.

I don’t believe prison should be enjoyable. Prison should be an unpleasant experience so offenders do not want to return.

The justice system’s sole focus should not be on punishment. It is very important to give people the opportunity to turn their lives around.

Precisely. Judith Collins is right in touch with the feel on the streets, she clearly doesn’t ensconce herself in the rarefied atmosphere of the beltway. Serious Offenders need serious punishment, not PLasma screens and heated floors and cuddle toys and warm blankets. They need hard punishment and then when they get that message we can start looking at rehabilitation.

But pressure from those who advocate for the rights of criminals has resulted in too much focus on rehabilitating the prisoners who are least likely to be rehabilitated.

We should accept that some offenders will never be rehabilitated, and divert resources to those who could benefit from it.

The Government has announced a three-strikes policy that will escalate the severity of sentences.

Hoorah! The days of the panty-waist liberals running our prison is over. In the Police and Corrections Minister we have a minister who knows and understands about the victims of crime and what we need to do about. Som eoffenders are beyond redemption and the faster they are worked to an early grave the better. Perhaps under our free trade detail with China we could outsource the detention of lifers to China. They at least know how to make their sorry lives useful, often by using them as organ donors. The Chinese are very efficient when it come to making the useless useful.

'Crusher' always seems to be a voice or reason. Lets hope JK follows through and backs her up. Get the savages, scroats and shitheads off the streets. They make the choice to commit the crime, they know right from wrong and should suffer the full brunt of the law. At the moment they don't and know they will get away with a slap on the hand with a soggy bus ticket. isn't it refreshing to have a minister of police with the 'balls' for the job. It gives me some hope for the future.

"As far as I am concerned, Offenders have no rights except the right to be housed and fed. "
They also have a right to be treated in accordance with the law including prison regulations and rules set by Parliament. If Parliament so wishes, No 1 & 2 diets and bread and water can be re-introduced.

"That Judge should be sacked. it is their job to protect society by putting crims away, "
If the sentence is too weak, the correct procedure is for the Crown Solicitor to appeal it. If the sentencing guidelines thus set by the Court of Appeal are too weak, Parliament can give the judiciary sentencing directions by passing the appropriate legislation.

It would be quite improper for executive government to interfere with sentencing other than by promoting legislation, and this includes the threat of dismissal of judges.

How I wish the gutless Neville Key would get out of the way and let Collins really lead the country.

She is what this stupid little nation needs, a strong Maggie Thatcher type, one that will not cuddle up to the apartheid party and one that will take a big stick to the pinkos and bludgers.

    • Sinner

big stick to the pinkos and bludgers.

Fuck that. Crusher would use a pump-action shotgun at least,

      or something belt fed.

  • Mike

peterwn basically sums it up well. English never has nor should it be about 'victims'.
The trouble is we have and still do have a very inward corrections system, recidivism is rife. The wrong people are in the wrong jobs.
The other issue is the prisons themselves.Prison life is NOT a holiday home, ask anyone who has time serious time.
The harder the prison the harder the criminal. That is Fact look at the former Soviet union and the USA and Australia and Britain. Hell even dictatorships produced the worst criminals and then 'exported ' them to the West, so to speak.
There is no quick fix to our problems.
Our prisons are full, they try and build new ones that requires funding but the ever fickle NZ tax payer doesn't want to pay, or the politician doesnt want to loose his./her seat.

  • mediatart

How many in our prisons ?
8500 and climbing yet there is more crime than ever.
    Hello something isnt working

How many will be affected by the 3 strikes ?
hello we are talking 50 people who MAY get 5 years more time way down the track – when Crusher Collins is back to fitting shoes in Farmers

As for the crocodile tears for the victims from Collins. Wheres the money for them ?
What has she got for them maybe an extra $800,000 . hallelujah

    • Bigbruv

I have no problem at all with my tax dollars going to house scum in prisons, build as many as we need.

    • Simo

Ever wondered why your an idiot? Suckhole liberal justice devolution process=crime starts to pay then becomes a career=more dickheads caught 'cause their stupid=more prisons.

      • mediatart

Fix the problems , jobs, housing , family violence and the NEW supply of criminals will dry up.

Otherwise its a race against demographics which you cant win.

        • Simo

How about sending a message to the current supply first before you steal taxpayers money to fix the "problem" After 9 years of Helengrad, pinching the wealth creators and giving to "fix the jobs housing mob, will only lead to more misery as we all experienced under the "gimme giveaway" crowd

        • Sinnner

I have huge fucking problem with my tax dollars providing food & lodging to crims and bludgers and oldsters and sickos and all the rest. And an ever huger problem with the great stonking moral hazard once benefits & super are eliminated, but we're still feeding & clothing crims in prison.

The solutions to this problem are all very well known – and it seems Crusher has the guts, at last, to rid NZ of criminal scum once and for all

          1. armed police with a mandate not to fill up prisons, and appropriate legal backing

          2. prisoners must pay for their full board & lodging & healthcare IN ADVANCE – say within the first week of sentence.

          3. those who cannot pay – see point 1.

  • Simo

Judith Collins has just migrated from a pathetic Labour Party PC yard broom to the 10 ton street sweeper. I hope she can implement the 3 strikes and give NZ'ers some peace of mind from random and violent attacks on them and their families. The truck needs to visit Northland urgently.

  • NotKaineThompson

Any wonder given that this guy http://grassroots.labour.org.nz/profiles/blogs/i-… (also a regular commentator as Kaine T at RedAlert) is a senior manager + supposedly neutral public servant at Ministry of Justice

    • Not Simon Power

      OIA to Simon Power:
Does your dept have a policy on use of deptal time and resources for labour party activities, if so please provide copy
Is your dept investigating possible use of deptal time and resourcs by senior manager Kaine Thompson, if so please provide all relevant reports.
How many staff are being investigated for conduct like that of Kaine Thompson.

Get rid of Power and get Collins in to sort it – she wouldn't allow senior managers to spend their time on labour activities

  • jabba

mm, just read the post Not KT .. apart from the belief that labour have a strong list of MP's, I sort of agree but he was too soft. It was written it seems for the MP's and Party in general, to hear some critism without upsetting them or having Trevor deleting and banning him.
Much of what he said is similar to the advice I used to give in Redalert but got so pissed off being dismissed out of hand that i simply thought fuckem.

  • dogmelon

Since when has prison been about rehabilitation? Prison is about keeping scumbag crims away from you and me. Don’t like the treatment dished out to you in prison? Don’t commit crime, stop being so thick.

    • Mike

The corrections is about rehabilitation dogmelon thats one of the reasons we have such a high incarceration rate.
Crime and criminals have always been about so you comment about Don't commit crime is really wasted.
As to the treatment dished out i have no issues with that at all but them seem to be folk in this country who believe prisons are soft.
Share you thoguhts on why people commit crime if you think i'm thick ?

  • http://www.nightcitytrader.blogspot.com Elijah Lineberry

I think what is needed is to view prisoners as being possessed by 'evil'; as such what about flogging every prisoner daily? …in order to beat the evil out of them?

We may as get all 'Old Testament' when dealing with these prisoner chappies lest someone felt being locked in a cell did not constitute punishment perspicacity.

The introduction of daily floggings will undoubtedly appeal to vast numbers of people and be a sign that punishments are being handed out universally, especially if floggings were mandatory on a daily basis regardless of the health of the prisoner (or the amount of skin remaining on his back) .."if you can't do the time don't do the crime" in a fairly literal way.

It has an added benefit of strongly discouraging a return to a prison environment once a sentence is complete or parole granted.

    • Mike

been tried and failed lineberry. Havne't you learnt that yet !!!!

    • Sinner

Yet more expense. Food. Lodging. guards. and now floggers too.

regardless of the health of the prisoner (or the amount of skin remaining on his back)

it may be less amusing, but except in special cases (labour party exec members) it is will be quicker and much cheaper just to shoot 'em. Charge their estate for the cost of the bullet of course.

  • Titan-Uranus

And the softly ,softly approach is working? How?
The reality is, nothing works , scum is as scum does, unfortunately the bleeding heart sociologists can`t/don`t want to understand this.
Rehabilitation should be available those who want to change their ways after their sentence has been completed .
As the current system stands ,how do you rehabilitate those prisoners who don`t want to be rehabilitated, just want to do their stint in the holiday camp then be released to carry on raping ,murdering and pillaging.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Pauleastbay Pauleastbay

Where we have it really wrong in NZ is that prison is not used early enough. We have people out there with literally hundreds of convictions.
There are now 7 layers of punishment before they will send you to prison ,unless you rape or murder.
Especially when they are young we try the softly softly ,approach so the kids don't really see a consequence of their behaviour.
Lag them early, give them the shock. Its no use sending people to prison after they have 100 convictions, they are professional criminals by then.therefore they cannot be rehabilitated no matter what they do. William Bell-triple murderer 169 convictions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many of those should have seen him doing 30 years before he killed three people

  • Mark

    Idea No 1

Death penelty: Once a person is found guilty of a specific crime a panel of 3 judges then decide (majority rules) wheter to impose a death sentence (we would set up our own death penelty rules and try to avoidthe problems with the american system)
Following on from this all money saved (by not housing these scum) would then be put into proper rehab, education, job training, make work schemes etc etc

For "nuisence" crimes such as petty vandalism, tagging etc I'd advocate bringing back the stocks and setting them up in the busy parts of town, these idiots think they're cool well we'll see how cool they are in the stocks

For more serious crimes I'd advocate public caning

    thoughts

    • Mike

have you seen a public flogging ?Indonesia do it quite frequently.
You would probably been standing in line to stone an adulteress as well.

  • dogmelon

I’m sick of the apologists for crims. Why are you crim lovers so in love with crims? You lot are stuffed in the head and need to be drowned forthwith. The three “n”ed sinner had it right with the 1, 2, 3 crime elimination method.

  • JustInterested

As someone who has a qualification in researching crime, and the economic cost of housing criminals, i can tell you that its not as easy as you all think. It is easy to comment on a blog on how we should just "bring back the death penalty"

Here are some costs (ball park of course)

cost of housing a criminal is around 30k p.a (USD)

Cost of committing someone to death and actually killing them is around 3 million (USD)

Therefore it doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand that only after 100 year does it even make financial sense!

The simple fact is you cant try someone, find them guilty and shoot them in the carpark that arvo….society puts more of a value on life than that, and lawyers love the appeals process! And even if we did just let 3 judges decide on a persons fate, and shoot them this arvo, arn't we just as bad as the scum in the dock?

I dont really have a political view on this, and im not affiliated to any political party. Im just interested in the discussion!

New to this blog malarchy, but interested none the less!

    • Sinner

Cost of committing someone to death and actually killing them is around 3 million (USD)

Only in the fucking US-of-A where pantywaisted liberals have introduce due process, Miranda restrictions, mandatory appeals, clemency etc etc etc.

the simple fact is you cant try someone, find them guilty and shoot them in the carpark

Why not? China does. indonesia does. North Korea does. The UK did as late as 1945.

Even better, you can shoot them in the carpark first, also avoiding the expenses of remand,
lawyers, juries, judges and a trial. Which party of "Bruce Emery is a hero" don't you understand?

      • JustInterested

China, Indonesia, North Korea…..i rest my case really. Hardy progressive democracies really are they

Due Process is part of a fully functioning legal system unfortunately.

        • Sinner

China, Indonesia, North Korea…..i rest my case really. Hardy progressive democracies really are they

So what? Compare then economic growth to NZ!!

Due Process is part of a fully functioning legal system unfortunately

Crap. And NZ's legal system is NOT fully functioning when it lets crims live.

Why doesn't NZ reintroduce the death penalty but contract the executions out to China for a prescribed fee?
