Police car parked in Loading Zone

As I was returning to my car from court today I snapped this photo. I waited more than 5 minutes chatting to some builders who were trying to unload wood around the illegally parked Police car. They were very frustrated so I offered my assistance. Note that a Police car isn’t a Goods Vehicle, doesn’t have a Goods Service Licence and is not a Truck.

But aren't they a law unto themselves? Got to get me one of those cars. Park anywhere, harrass anyone with a car that looks faster than mine, make up for my small penis and impress my mummy.

    • Ian Colville

Well they think they are a law to themselves, that is what pisses most of us off.

  • Scott

Maybe they were attending a job in the area? If you were in need of police assistance and they arrived late because they could not find a park, you would then blog about that too! Also, a police vehicle needs to be close at hand for the drivers in case they are called to a job. Again, if you get robbed and beaten and the police response was late because they had to run 4 blocks to get to their car, you would also blog that!

The builders would just have to put up with it, as something as simple as a car park could put lives at risk. Did you think of that?

    • Chris

Couldn't agree more. The ironic stupidity is… the Justice Dept don't own any carparks outside the court building. Jurors get paid their carparking… for me it was $35 a day… the girl next to me walked all the way across the city cos it was $12… once again shortsighted infrastructure, crap roading, full harbour bridge, shit tunnel design north bound… and no parking in the city thats affordable… two Aust owned companies own all the carparking in NZ !

    • http://www.cadlow.co.nz Spanish Bride

Of course we understand. The only reason WO has pointed this out is because it is a technical beach of the law yet perfectly understandable…perhaps much like what he has been charged for by the police and the very reason why this blog is now being monitored by the police.

        pwned

      • Mokita

The opposite side of the coin is where the cop taking helen the undead to a rugby match was charged with speeding.

    • Alan

If I got robbed and beaten i doubt there would be many police on hand with a convenient carpark at that. Last dealing with police was when i moved my car from one carpark to another just 30 metres away to pick up my daughter after dance lessons. (it was torrential rain). A brainwashed (or braindead) police 'man' fined me for no seatbelt. I drove 30 metres at 20kms ph. I stared in disbelief and called him a cupid stunt when he told me it was a safety issue. I then went to the police station to complain. 20 minutes waiting with not a single response to the buzzer in the foyer. I gave up went home and wrote a letter. Now if me or my granny had been attacked in the street and went to the station to find help?! Too busy picking on easy targets to do real work imho.

    • Rob

When ever I have been in need of police assistance over the last 53 years , they have always arrived late
Run 4 blocks …………they could have run a marathon!!!!!!

  • Red-Free NZ ltd

Cam, I noticed the vehicle is parked during the day so, maybe, just maybe they were arresting a day walker! Surely – that's ok to be parked for a wee bit longer to rid the world of those souless gingers!

  • Steve

I think you should make sure this driver gets a ticket, you have clear proof that this car is in violation of the law & and the "great leader" himself (John Key's) said "no one is above the law not even the police"

  • Disgusted

I fully agree Steve, I once while watching a large fight on K Road observed a Police car come screeching up into a park with its front wheels over some broken yellow lines with the officers then jumping out without even bothering to put any coins in the meter so they could display a valid parking ticket like the rest of us.

Made me utterly sick and wonder what the priorities of these dirty harrys were!

  • http://www.tdtech.co.nz Matt

How long did it sit there for? Where they really on a job? Spanish Bride is bang on.

I've followed a police car before, the traffic was slow, they through their lights on so they could get somewhere very quickly, we ended up behind them as were where heading through the BK drivethrough…

Keep doing what you are doing WO, i'm checking your blog everyday now, just another new fan i guess :)

  • Cadwallader

Interesting though: If it had been a "paddy-wagon" they'd be more than entitled to park there as that type of police vehicle is operating a definite service.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Whaleoil Whaleoil

And loading and unloading….well they can't be described as Goods,…What about Bads.

      • SIS

        "alleged" bads :)

  • Wheels

What is happening to our city?? I have never known our parking wardens to miss an opportunity to gather revenue? i am sure they could forward a ticket based on your evidence!!

From memory isn't there a donut or coffee shop directly across the road?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/peterwn peterwn

AFAIK, there is some law that exempts police from normal parking restrictions. Police can even cordon off street parking for police use.

  • Tim

I have written to both John Banks and Dick Hubbard in their time as Mayor, enclosing photos of the exact same thing. They park around the District Court all day long, including in Pay car spaces, coach spaces, loading zones etc. Both the jerks said that it was fine with them ,we should encourage the Police etc. I have also spoken to a Parking Warder right next to a Police car there, parked "illegally". He told me that he would personally like to write a ticket but they had been told not to ticket them. The theory is that the cops can park there when on "urgent business"". It can't be that uyrgent if they park there all day. Really they are just taxis for Police from Central………….another do as I say rather than do as I do….

  • John Q Public

If the police are monitoring your blog WO, can I just say then PLEASE DIVERT AT LEAST ONE PATROL FROM CHECK POINT DUTY TO EMILY PLACE RESERVE THUR'S to-SAT'S AFTER6pm TO FIND AMPLE UNDER-AGE DRINKERS AND BUMS SUPPING ON NZ DRAUGHT AND WOODSTOCK IN THE LIQUOR BAN AREA, THEN LEAVING THEIR RUBBISH BEHIND. Isn't that a $200 fine or something? Are there not brownie points on those sort of busts or something, is that why we don't see them?

    • Anonymous

Why don't you ring the police up and tell them next time?

  • Anonymous

I think 'illegal' parking spots are fair game for police officers (except handicapped or fire hydrant spots unless they're in an emergency). Since the police cars can "get away with it" they free up LEGAL parking spaces for everyone else. Auckland parking spots are at a premium, and the probably would rather let a good citizen have a legal spot so the citizen do not get ticketed or towed.

    • Tim

Is this guy stupid or what? They are parked ILLEGALLY in LEGAL parking spots……..got it???????How hard is that???

      • Anonymous

"Loading Zone – Goods Service vehicles ONLY at all times"

This isn't a legal parking spot to the general public.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Whaleoil Whaleoil

Nor to the Police, they don't have a GSL number or TSL number on the vehicle. Those are the only vehicles allowed to parlk in that spot.

  • Dex

Rofl, sad little Timmy, what a crusader against this horrible crime against society, no bigger injustices for you to wail about than cops who are going to court to help nail crooks having to park their cars illegally because of the lack of parks the council provides them?

Were you urging Banksie and co to make the streets around the courts exclusively Police parking during court hours? would help solve the problem and ensure less tax payer money is wasted.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Whaleoil Whaleoil

It was right beside a fricken parking building you idiot. If it is good enough for me to pay for the parking why can't they.

    • Tim

Fuck you half wit. It is illegal for the cops to park there. YOU are conding illegality by the cops. See if you feel the same when the cops fit YOU up in Court…………..so up yours ,sad little Dexy (what a shitty name)

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/AuntieDrea AuntieDrea

This is typical of the cops… i followed one a couple of weeks ago, it was an highway patrol car who failed to indicate a left hand turn. i sat behind him and shook my head. If he had been behind me and i failed to indicate he would have pulled me over. I thought about reporting him on the Police's bad driving website but thought twice about it when i saw they required you to supply full contact details….. Yeah right

  • Dex

Because your not a public servant expected to attend court including getting your witnesses, victims, evidence and whatever as part of your job. If we want them to use private carparking building and pay the ridiculous costs then the cost would come back to those of us who pay taxes and I'm guessing would result in cutting back in other areas.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Ciaron Ciaron

you can quite comfortably fit five adults in a commodore, so surely they could have another officer or better yet a non-sworn staffer drop off the testifying officer and his/her witness(s) thus freeing up a park and a patrol vehicle, no?

    • Tim

What are u , a cop's bitch?Do you know the difference between RATES and TAX? The parking money goes to RATES. Not taxes. Tt is not from one pocket to another, it is money NOT going towards Auckland City that would be if the pay spaces were actually used by motorists, rather than bludged by cops who are too lazy to walk fromCentral

  • tom

Clearly not an efficient use of taxpayer funds. To leave a car parked there all day suggests that its a perks car for the current recipient. When the police a re reducing their fleet one wonders if it would be better used in South Auckland or do they have enough cars or perhaps are they short of policemen to man them?
Surley a quick trip in a taxi would suffice or even a dungy old car with a civilian driver to chauffeur them and others around.

  • voda

Plus they can drive with phones when other emergency services can't.

  • Rose

I think that they need to be able to park in areas like this to get the jobs done properly. They are allowed to park where ever they want and for free when doing their jobs, it may be a pain for people who are inconvenienced but think about this if there were greater restrictions on where police could park while doing their job if something happened that they may have been able to prevent people would be kicking up a fuss that they weren't there earlier.

    • Tim

I've watched them at the District Court. There is no way in the world they are going to run out of there if there is an emergency elsewhere. Too cosy inside to do that, standing around talking to their mates all day. Their cars are parked so close all day, so they don't have to walk far when they exit at 5pm. At the end of the day, it is NOT a good look for them to occupy the limited number of spaces available to the public, van drivers, coach drivers etc. this is nothing to do with getting the job done "properly", it is simply abusing their position.

  • kehua

Lay off the street cops Cam, it ain`t a pretty job but they do it, and generally do it well. Wonder when any of your posters had a bucket of shit/urine thrown at them or cut down a 17 yo suicide and then had to tell the kids parents. Your beef is with the Judiciery and the Police hierachy, and your smartarse narking of an improperly parked car could cause some young Cop grief. Is that what you want big boy?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Whaleoil Whaleoil

Quite right, It is Chief Wiggum and his pals that are the problem.
