The New Green

The new Green MP is loaded with real world experience, he should contribute a great deal to the parliament.

At 26 years of age, Gareth is the youngest Green Party electorate candidate. Gareth used to be a boy racer, worked in a fish and chip store, a supermarket, he’s been a radio DJ, a telemarketer, a pamphlet deliverer, a hospital orderly, a barman, and a fundraiser. Since then, Gareth has been arrested dressed as Ronald McDonald, learnt to climb buildings and unfurled a protest banner in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

  • Cadwallader

"Unfurled a protest banner in Tiananmen Square": Why wasn't he shot on the spot? The Chinese had the chance to do us all a favour. Anyway the Greens are history and I only hope are well interred forever.

  • Wilbur

Oh dear, as a fellow member of that D*&k heads generation I am so embarrassed. My generation already gets a bad wrap foor tools like this…. now the effen communist party are putting them into places of minor power…. and I'll bet he's only interested in parliament cos He won't / can't get a real job!!! I would go the easy street (parliament) if I wasn't so busy working hard at my career to sponsor his mates on the dol!! FUCK SAKES I'm one frustrated 24 year – P.S Love your work Whale, finally some one to look upto!

  • oldgolfer

    Jesus, give me strength!

  • Hagues

Interesting (well not really interesting in the classic sense) at the end of his profile under "Additional" he has listed that he was arrested as Ronald McDonald. Only thing is it was already mentioned twice before on the profile. Besides the fact that he thinks this is an "achievement" (along with getting married and having a kid – cause that is so hard) if he is too stupid to realise that "additional" means place for information not already stated then God help us if he has a say in how our country is run.

  • Inventory2

There can be now doubt now that the Greens are a hard-left party, and that their agenda is far more socialist than environmental. With Fitzsimons gone, they have lost their only "moderate". Even that is debatable, and Fitzsimons may have been a Commie in a Green dress.

    The "watermelon" label now suits.

  • StrikeForce

He sounds like a complete tosser. But It makes a change as at least he has worked in many jobs most unskilled and lowpaid, But at least he hasn't seen the need to look down at those sorts of jobs like most parlimentary leftists do.

I was expecting to hear that gareth was a university graduate with a masters in politics and a post graduate
diploma from a leading european university and has also been a member of the international socialist youth party. Gareth is currently entering parliment without ever holding a job but is doing a new degree at waikato in enviromental science. That is the headline for all new young leftists politicians, At least it seems he has some life experience working with everyday people unlike all of his party. Never the less he sounds like a left wing nutjob.

  • coge

Wow. He's a bigger nut than the woman he is replacing. Clearly well qualified for the position!

  • Steam Special

Another nut job, no green vote for me! I've had a guts full of the weak chin wankers.

  • http://twitter.com/danvds @danvds

OMG – have you guys missed it? He's been employed before! – in a supermarket AND a fish and chip shop. (then we look at the long list of jobs that this young man has had and realise that he never lasted long at any of them… but he's had experience and that's what counts when you're wanting to help run a country)

  • Roger

    2 things:

    1. at 26 I was a good sensible young guy – but in no way or shape ready to help manage a country. I seriously question whether this guy has the necessary "real life experience" necessary for such a noble calling, let alone extensive business and/or management experience.

The Greens must be in serious trouble if this is the best they can do.

    2. I am not very happy that we, the taxpayer, are going to be funding this loser for life.

    Roger

    • PoohBear

Hopefully they won't make the 5% threshold at the next election and then we won't have to pay for these losers.

  • Bob
  • suzan

Scraping the bottom of the barrel there by the looks…what next..monkeys?

    • Captain Crab

A monkey would be brighter and more experienced.

  • alex Masterley

The greens are off to the furthest reaches of outer purgatory with this guy.

  • Jeef

This will spell the end of their parliamentary days. As well as being an MP from next month, this bloke is STILL an eco-fascist greenpeace activist too, with a knee-jerk hairshirted, sandal-wearing, vegetarian attitude to match. Chip shop server, checkout operator, barboy (probably the pot collector) and hospital orderly? Well placed to know all about running NZ.

We could do with less of these yoghurt-knitters anywhere near the corridors of power.

Whale – he also helped run roadshows to support the Emissions Trading Scheme. ’nuff said.

  • Rob S

They may want to update his profile, unless i'm mistaken being born in 1981 makes him 28.

I thought the greens were trying to tone down their nutjob activist side rather than bringing in more bradford/locke types? Oh well with any luck it will put more people off the greens than ever before.

  • http://gotcha.co.nz Barnsley Bill

I think many of you are being unduly harsh. This young man is the first green mp who looks as though he has at least a passing knowledge of what it must be like to have had a toothbrush in his mouth.

  • David

Oh for fuck sake. The very look of this guy pisses me off. This guy is going be a great weak link for the Greens, and should be good for poorly thought out sound bites for the media. People are going to get pissed off with him, and bring the Greens down even further. I hope that he doesn't assume the spokesperson role for every young person.

    • http://halfdone.wordpress.com scrubone

Week link??!? You *did* see the video of Delahunty's maiden speech, didn't you?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Ciaron Ciaron

more proof that criminal convictions should bar you from parliament.

  • jabba

he is a nice looking chap .. if I was him I would avoid a certain red head from the Labour party

  • http://gotcha.co.nz Barnsley Bill

Jabba. That comment is pure gold. Right now I hate you a little less than everybody else.

  • arfamo

OMG. This poor sod hasn't been able to hold a job and thinks in slogans. Poor Greens. They really are rudderless these days.

  • Fred

    MMP Rocks………………….. NOT!!

  • crabby

first impression : looks like he has been cranking the Botox

  • caleb

    wtf.

our political parties are becoming a joke.

    we need something new..

  • caleb

    political idol

a new show, where contestants take each other on to become a seating nz mp!!

  • jabba

good call caleb .. that would be a real laugh .. and thanks Barnsley

  • Emily

Sucks that even with people like this the Greens get a vastly larger chunk of the party vote than Act. :D And while he is young compared to many current MPs, I think it's a good thing to encourage more youth input into politics and legislation today. Too many baby boomers trying desperately to hold on to their 65 year eligibility for pension when countries around the world are recognising this is unsustainable. Sorry, you WON'T get a free education plus low taxes plus a great elderly benefit. And no, paying taxes for however long doesn't earn it – you took enough from the younger generations when you got your free education, mum and dad.

  • jabba

Emily .. young people in politics is fantastic .. but a Ronald McDonald wannabe is a bit much for me.
Don't get me wrong, I love hamburgers.

  • http://twitter.com/adybombs @adybombs

This guy was #11 on the party list?? We have to assume they only have 11 members. I am not happy about paying his wages, especially since we have to wait till next year to sack him. On the bright side he obviously hasn't held down any job for too long so here's hoping he will be gone by Xmas

  • Pedrovsky

Jabba.. brilliant. Barnsley- you are right, young Gareth does brush his teeth and seems (having met him) for a green very un-feral. I don't share the disdain the rest of you have for him. I have run out of disdain on his fellow feral Catherine Delahunty… plan for the economy "income redistribution", means to do this "jewelry confiscation"… race relations policy "Maori cannot be racist toward Pakeha cos of disempowerment". Jeanette on the radio today said that the green bit couldn't be separated from the 'social justice bit'. Pity that.. I could vote for the green bit, it's the commie bit I hate.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Chiefsfan73 Chiefsfan73

obviously hasn't read the eugenist part of the green manifesto. His child will have to ask if it is alright to bring a child into this world. It is the ultimate green agenda to control population. They should all start right now by all agreeing not to breed, then in a generation or so we wont have ignorant F#$kers like this telling us what to do.

  • Michaels

    BEST FUCKING MOVE EVER.
With the tree hugger gone so will be the Greens!!!
    FUCKING FABULISTIC :) :) :)

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/The_Grizz The_Grizz

He studied religious studies and history. Does anyone know if he ever completed these?

He is a vegetarian but made protests about chicken feed. Go figure.

  • The Gantt Guy

Why are you all so upset that the left has put up a(nother) muppet? Surely, it should be the goal of the VRWC and anyone else with the slightest sense to ecourage the left to keep replacing muppets with more muppets. The more ridiculous the left, the more the average New Zealand voter will move across to the Nats or (if they have any sense at all) ACT.

    • http://halfdone.wordpress.com scrubone

My thoughts exactly, we should encourage this young man.

In fact, with candidates like this (and Catherine), can there be any doubt that the Green party is thoroughly infiltrated with secret National supporters?

    • rightsaidfred

yes. but everyone here is stupid.
