Crim-cuddlers should just shut up

The DomPost reports that Tasers are helping in many situations with calming down perps.

The Taser is saving lives, and many criminals are simply surrendering at the sight of it, police say.

Nine people were shot with a Taser in its first year of use and some incidents were so violent, the offender could have been shot with a firearm, if the stun gun had not been available. Police policy is to shoot at the torso.

A tenth person was tasered in Johnsonville on Friday.

That is so funny. Before the Taser was available people may have been shot but now the Taser is available the crims are very wary. Go figure, they ignore a Glock which spits 9mm bullets and fear a jolt from a Taser. Ignore sthe gun that could kill you, fear the zapper. Fricken dumb crims.

Back in 2006 veteran Crim-cuddler Marie Dyhrberg was all for banning them.

A campaign has been launched to stop the introduction of taser guns to the police.

It was revealed in February that trials of electronic stun guns are planned for later this year. Now a group calling itself ‘Campaign Against The Taser’ is trying to fire up debate.

Barrister and group spokeswoman Marie Dyhrberg says there should be a full independent inquiry about the devices. She says with major concerns already being raised about police use of pepper spray, it is critical the introduction of tasers is carefully scrutinised.

Liberal, panty-waist crim-cuddlers should just STFU. The Taser is saving lives.

If they are that scared of it, then weekly tasering should also be included in any sentences handed down.

      more scared of the GLOCK!

It's often very difficult to understand or see any sense in some pressure groups. Dyhrburg's campaign must almost take the illogicality prize for all time. Her opinions would be welcome now…

I'm in favour of the cops using them… but as long as they yell "Pikachu!" first

Fuck no – didn't you listen to the lefty cop today "if we hadn't tasered the guy we'd have had to shoot him"

well once less crim is one less crim

Who needs a taser when you've got a GLOCK?

One aspect does worry me a bit. The cops have not said whether there were any 'Keystone Kops' type incidents invlving tasers. During the trial, the cops trumpeted the various successes with the taser but kept quiet about a 'Keystone Kops' type incident where an entirely innocent teenager was tasered by accident. When challenged the Police PR honcho said theough clenched teeth that the police did not need to tell media everything.

Well if there is going to be an accident involving my teenage son, I pray it is with a taser not a gun.

      • Sinner

A teenaged son that I'm paying the interest on his student loan perchance?

If he's "innocent" he wouldn't be getting himself tasered. Or shot.

if he's guilty, better to glock him than taser him! Think of the tax savings!

And where is Marie during this latest information release? Probably too busy arranging a pedicure's for inmates. . I'm sure she takes an opposing stand on such issues to get the free advertising for her law practice.
On this issue you fail Marie.

Are these the lives we really want to be saving?

    • Sinner

      Nope.

Does anyone know what the punishment is for police caught misusing the tasers?

    • http://www.cadlow.co.nz Spanish Bride

Did you know that in order to be able to carry and use a taser, the officer has to first allow themselves to be tasered in order to understand what the criminal will feel.
No one makes the police be shot before they can carry a rifle but our Kiwi cops have to be treated like a criminal before they can even carry them. Now THAT'S dedication. You won't see me volunteering for that anytime soon.

      • Sinner

All the more reason not to fuck about with tasers and go straight to Glock 18s, M1014s, M67s etc.

If you're storming a gang house or mowing down a greenie protest, a taser or Glock 17 ain't much use!

      • corks

No this is NOT true!!!!! Whoever does the training used to be able to volunteer to to be zapped, but it is certainly not mandatory to be tasered before undergoing the training!

More importantly ,does anyone give a shit if the police "misuse"a taser?

can anyone tell me the name of the guy caught with the kid porn

The whole idea was that a lot of the time when cops have shot an offender in a situation where it was necessary and then the offender has died, there is a massive investigation and some times the cops are found to be at fault, that they could have handled it better and action has been taken against them. The idea of a taser is so that police can take control of a situation in a way that is safe for everyone including the officer involved.
However when I first heard that tasers would be replacing guns in a lot of circumstances in policing I was opposed because I was thinking what is there to control police? With a gun their is the fear that if they don't exercise a certain amount of control things could end badly for them. Where as with a taser they can just go for their lives, if someone pisses them off they can just shock them a few more times.
I am pleased to see that there are cameras on them to record how they are used. I mean I think over all the police do a good job but I know there are a few out there who are a bit overzealous to put it politely.

As it happens, Rach, there appear to be more than just a few "over-zealous" types on this thread. From the tenor of these, I'm happy for the cops to be over-zealous, just so long as one or two of Whale Oil's readers don't contemplate joining the rozzers.
