When Mongs go Tramping

Kathy Menzies, her husband Mikal and their three children, with Hastings friend Ann Michelle and her two children, had hiked into the bush on Saturday. They planned to stay the night and walk out the next day.

But, by nightfall, the experienced trampers were using their cellphones to call for help before their batteries ran out.

They knew of the rain warning but were not aware how the fast-moving stream near the hut would be affected.

Ms Michelle said a suggestion would be going to the Department of Conservation to erect signs warning trampers of how rivers could change. Friends had recently hiked in the area with the same rain warning issued, but had not encountered problems.

The group never felt panicked or that they were truly stranded.

Fuckwits. The rain was forecast, the Met Service’s message of doom was there for anyone with half a brain to take on board. It was a message of doom too, they didn’t underplay their hand.

These morons went tramping despite repeated heavy rain warnings for at least two days before. If they were experienced, and I seriously doubt that because of silly statements, they should have known they were crossing a river, and rivers are inclined to flood during heavy rain warnings. Yet they demand DOC put up signs. As you can see from the picture supplied by the HB Today this river was already in flood when their photo was taken. The paper still put a caption of  “tranquil Waipawa Forks became a raging torrent within hours”. Look at the photo, the water is brown and foaming, it is already dangerous to cross. These people are stupid, they should have gone back to the hut and sat and waited rather than endanger rescue workers.

If DOC has to put signs up then they should say something like:

STUPID TRAMPERS GET TRAPPED BY RIVERS IF THEY TRAMP AFTER HEAVY RAIN WARNINGS

STUPID TRAMPERS CAN DIE IF THEY GET TRAPPED BY FLOODING RIVERS

DARWINISM WEEDS OUT STUPID TRAMPERS THAT TRAMP AFTER HEAVY RAIN WARNINGS

STUPID TRAMPERS WILL PAY FOR EVACUATION IF THEY TRAMP AFTER HEAVY RAIN WARNINGS

Over many years of Tramping and Hunting sometimes for weeks at a time, you just don’t get a chance for weather warning, but you at least know when the rain is falling, it keeps hitting your hutchie endlessly. River rise fast, any competent tramper knows that. I have seen the Orongorongo River go from fordable to bank to bank in under 3 hours. I was on a hunting trip up the Manganuku River and it dumped down solid for 4 hours and the river went from the usual deep dark silent river to boulder smashing raging torrent. the freakiest part of rivers going from fording depth to bank to bank is watching trees slide past you and hearing the rocks smashing together and rolling along under the water. You know, unless you are congenitally stupid, that if you go in that water you are going to die and it will hurt. With my Manganuku trip we set up camp well above the flood line, put the food on emergency status and stay under our huchies telling dumb jokes all day and the next until the water subsided, then we walked out.

Unfortunately the NZ bush kills…..stupid people.

You notice how it wasn' their fault.. its was DOC's.__

Now I loath DOC with a passion but even I can't see how I could put any blame on them for this._

I told you,—– means test of brains before being allowed to vote.

This guy has already bred so we have another generation of imbeciles

So true. For more visit the darwinawards.

"They knew of the rain warning but were not aware how the fast-moving stream near the hut would be affected."

I fucking hate tramping with a passion. I have done the odd couple hour bush walk and hated it enough to know that I never want to make a day of it, let alone overnight (or longer). BUT even I know that rain makes rivers flood and this can happen extremely quickly. I guess you don't need to be a tramper to know that…. just have a minimum of two brain cells to rub together. Don't steal my money to make up for your stupidity!!!

"by nightfall, the experienced trampers were using their cellphones to call for help before their batteries ran out."

I count 8 people, probably 5 or 6 phones at least (most likely 8). Couldn't they have charged them all before they left and only turned them on when they were needed? Battery power should not have been an issue. More evidence of their stupidity.

    Mikal Menzies——-Silly name syndrome?

  • Rach

Omg, i learnt at the age of 8 the dangers of rivers and rain and tramping and how NZ weather can turn on you at any moment. Clearly they arent experienced trampers at all. Experienced trampers would have had enough supplies to stay longer than they intended and not been concerned about being stranded due to swollen rivers.
    TRAMPING FAIL!

    • Rach

To add to my above comment: And why the hell is this news worthy?

  • crabby

Darwinism must be quite newsworthy now.

  • petal

I'm quite happy for stupid people to die. I'm not happy when they survive and then try to save the rest of us from making the same mistakes. ARGH.

  • bob8

yep whale i concur did a lot of hunting and tramping when i was younger and the only reason i'm 65 yo is because i looked at the rivers and the weather and stayed put until it was safe to proceed . fuck making base, home, work or whatever at a certain time, that only gets you killed. and for the ones that don't plan a safety margin book em!!!!

  • Rhino

For once whale i agree with you, they fucked up and then coming out and blaming someone else is NOT the way to acknowledge your fault and say thanks.
But in their defence their initial decision making is quite plausible (I dont know these people or the river valley but I will try and paint a picture). There experience is gained from walking main roads (great walks, pinnacles etc) were bridges are plentiful or going tramping during fine weather. A friend told them this trip was sweet, they know about the weather warning but alot of people are dismissive of metservices forecasting ability.
"Friends had recently hiked in the area with the same rain warning issued, but had not encountered problems."
It rains and the STREAM goes up Hagues/Rach you say you know rivers go up but it is actually really hard to understand UNTIL you have seen it in action. Some people would think im mad for telling them a stream could become impassable when you can usually cross it without getting your feet wet. Other rivers are actually quite crossable in flood.
So anyway my point is that though they made a poor route decision, given the weather condition and the skills of the party, it is very simple to see how it is done. They made a mistake just like all accidents are a result of mistakes. Hagues I hope you bitch and moan about YOUR money being spent on the fire service and ambulances, because they are just helping people from there mistakes and the mistakes of those around them.
Rach the publication of these stories are actually really good in letting people know what dangers are out there and try and help them avoid making the same mistakes

    • Rach

I really enjoy your rational approach and your reasoning

    • Hagues

Sometimes shit just happens and its unavoidable (although that is what insurance is for!!!). Sometimes people through their (note the spelling of 'their' instead of 'there' when refereing to things belonging to people) own stupidity get themselves into all sorts of avoidable situations. In those cases I do bitch and moan they are wasting taxpayers (my) money. Prey tell, why should I bear any portion of the cost when someone puts oil on the stove and then buggers off to do something else and burns their house down?

  • Sinner

DOC or the government should waste absolutely no effort, time, energy, assets and especially MY FUCKING TAXES on “rescuing” scum like these.

If there is a private insurance company with the ability to rescue them well so be it – but I hope the premiums are expensive and they are paid in advance!

Hunters, other trampers, and of course the cops should deal with these kind of criminal idiots they way all other crims and leftists should be dealt with – 9mm parabellum

  • michael

The experienced trampers should pay for their rescue and stay in town with the latte crowd or join a tramping club to cover areas they lack knowledge in.How embarrassing.

  • Brian Smaller

My Dad taught me to never cross swollen rivers when I was a youngun. You just find some shelter and sit it out. These people were at a hut, unless I read it wrong. Play cards and yak. They are not going to starve in a couple of days. As said above – MORONS..
