Apology to Chris Carter

Whaleoil HarpoonedThe unthinkable has happened, I have made a mistake. Being a firm believer in owning your own shit I have apologised to Chris Carter and to his sister. A short time after I sent my apology email (below) Chris rang me and we had a pleasant chat about the whole incident. I thank Chris for taking the time to ring me, he certainly didn’t have to, the fact that he did and conducted himself in such a polite manner shows the measure of him.

I have well and truly harpooned my flipper on this one. Next time I will not be listening to CEO’s of telecommunications companies when they say I can bank on something.

I would like to unreservedly apologise to you for the last couple of days. I was misled about the exact details of the situation and have now clarified that the Mrs Carter in question is not in anyway related to you.

Further the whole issue was a horrible mistake from beginning to end starting with the Telco and the CEO of that telco concerned and ending with me. The phone issue is in fact legitimate use of parliamentary resources.

Once again I sincerely apologise and will remove the posts about yourself and your sister. I will also post this apology on my blog.

Please also pass on my sincere apologies to your sister.

UPDATE: I have also had a pleasant email from Chris’s sister. Both Chris and his sister are certainly showing up my appalling behaviour.

    I had an experience a few weeks ago in regard to the Prominent Palmerstonian where a connection I made turned out to be incorrect. It was a sobering experience; not one I’m keen to repeat. It was made easier though by the grace of the recipient of my apology.

    It sounds as though you have had a similar response from Chris Carter. Good on you for having the balls to apologise, and good on him for accepting the apology in that spirit. Though this battle has been lost, there’s still a war to win!

    Gidday Spanishbride – dear lady – i wouldnt dignify any comments of that nature (from ummm) with any further response. It is an insult to a fine lady. Honestly – i dont think he really means it – but it is a dishonour to present that to you as has been done.

    Theres a passage i like – (and remember im not a christian) … ” sit not in the seat of the scoffers …” from the psalms and there are some very poignant passages about not “rejoicing at the fall of your enemy” If i were to invoke my semi-wiccan-pagan tendencies (just part of the mess that is me) – its all about remembering that unjust cursing invokes a returning consequence.

    Cameron is neither deranged – nor is he a religious bigot – he is a man with the courage of his convictions. He is a man that you and your children should rightly be proud of.

    Thanks Garry but part of the fun of blogging is stupid little exchanges such as these.This is not a civilized forum and we therefore get to say things we would never say in person.I thought what I said was quite funny because I share WO’s black sense of humor.
    I am not genuinely upset by what Ummmm had to say. I am quite aware that WO is not deranged or a religious bigot just as I know that Ummms mother did not receive a facial this morning.

    Good on you Cameron for apologising.

    A couple of points:
    (1) I think bloggers — especially the prominent ones — are going to increasingly need to check their facts before publishing in future. My impression is that many people may be getting libelled on this and other sites, but are choosing not to involve lawyers because of the cost and a distaste for court action. You ought not take advantage of that.

    (2) I don’t see many of your commenters apologising for the stuff they said about Chris Carter, based on the posts you published.

      I am going to approach blogging with far more rigorous processes. i have learned from this experience and it was actually Chris’s magnanimous phone call that got me thinking.

      You are right in both points. You won’t see apologies because not all people have the courage to own their own shit, that is why they are anonymous.

    I have a new appreciation of Chris Carter .. had it been me having those thing said about me … i would have gone for the throat and not stopped till i had satisfaction for being impugned.

    it actually says something about the man – that is very commendable.

    And not a lot about commenters during the exercise in question – myself included.

    Im now keen in retrospect to capture that past stuff if possible.

    Those statements arent just your personal posts (the catalytic items) .. there are invited comments from 3rd parties and i would like to get a copy of them if i can.

    - I personally asked questions of you about the legal implications of your accusations regarding Chris Carter
    -I raised questions in posts about the problems with making accusations – and at one point you responded that Chris Carter taking Defamation action would be a big “fail”
    -At one point i cautioned both you and another commenter about personal attacks on Chris Carter and suggested one commenter apologise for attacks and abuse on Mr Carter related to the death of his mother. I was roundly abused for my trouble – but i accept that is your uncivilised blog environment etc.

    Now why am i asking this … in your post to Harpoon you say that “you wont see apologies etc etc as not everyone wants to own their own shit” – in answer to harpoons note about no apologies being forthcoming from your commenters (and i can only agree).

    Now what is really starting to piss me off mate is this salient fact … Harpoon is the only commenter that you have been meek and mild with. The rest put up with cursory admonishment or outright dismissal – depending on your mood at the time.

    I would like to see copies of those posts if possible – in some way shape or form.

    Whale – some people do “own their own shit” as you elegantly put it – they also dont appreciate feeling ‘shit’ all over metaphorically or otherwise.

    If you can provide copies of the posts cool – if not – equally cool – and any sycophantic whale supporters who want to heap abuse on this request – let me be very clear – you are ALL just fairweather friends and dont think i dont know it…

    There is a thing on google called Google Cache.

    If you go to Google, and search for something like
    site:whaleoil.gotcha.co.nz homo trophicus

    it should return all the posts. If you then, instead of just clicking the link, click on the smaller “cached” link, you’ll get Google’s last version of the page. Do that within a coupla days, odds are it’ll still come back. Then you don’t need to put so much pressure on the Whale for something that, ultimately, he really doesn’t have to provide you.

    Great thing about the internet, it’s virtually impossible to delete anything once it’s out there in the wild.

    Actually, on a complete tangent, it just doesn’t bear thinking about in terms of how much storage Google must have – they basically have a copy of the whole internet stored away in there somewhere. No wonder they have to build their data centres next door to power plants.

    On a different tangent, as someone who hasn’t been in the Whale’s comment thread for a while, I haven’t seen you around before. I understand where you’re going with the civilisation meme, but you do come across a bit as a school teacher. The first comment was OK – nice to be nice and all. But you seem to have gone off the deep end a bit there at the end – kind of a bit D4J. Too many wines tonight?

    Morning all – and thanks for the voices of reason in the preceding two posts.

    Whale – my sincere apologies for sounding off to all and sundry and in particular yourself in such an unfair manner. I have made the decision (I can hear BB and Michaels collapsing with laughter (rightly so) … blogging is not my thing. I am not cut out for this. Sometimes i enjoy it and other times i am absolutely horrified at myself and the environment i’ve so readily gotten down and dirty in.

    I do want to thank everyone who has put up with my posts – i think im safer to do scrapbooking! – that way i can get in less strife. I should have followed my instincts first time round when i was pulling out of the blog. The Chris Carter thing really shook me up – I dont mind admitting it.

    I’d never make a politician – too thinskinned. Cheers again guys and ladies – i’ve actually appreciated all your views – especially Whale. If i show up on here again in the future – just tell me to be a good lad and bugger off home. Again, Whale – i am sorry for sounding off and being all over the place like a mad dolphins poo.

    My advice – if someone is saying something you don’t particularly like, if you’re feeling like the comments or the post are getting you agitated, it’s time to turn off the screen, have a cup of coffee. You’ll feel much better when you come back, even if it’s a couple of days later. The world won’t end without you commenting.

    Guess im sort of emerging from an 8 year period of looking over my shoulder and hoping to god i was getting it all right while fighting off the family court and the PC educators and other parties. My aggression in defending myself and my boys didnt always go down well in some quarters.

    Like i said – it makes one a tad brittle around the edges – i am keen to move beyond that foolishness – and i realise it IS foolishness. But you do get conditioned by it.

    It’s a shame you’ve deleted the post, Cameron: it would’ve been fun to have identified the credulous, cretinous acolytes who took your word – or at least the word of this “Telco CEO” – as gospel. I look forward to reading all their mea culpas.

    Who is this mysterious CEO, incidentally? I’d like to know: it’s an outrageous and quite possibly criminal breach of customer confidentiality for them to bandy about personal information like this (especially when s/he’s completely fuckin’ wrong). Is it Paul Reynolds perchance? I think you owe it to your readers to name and shame the telco so we can avoid it at all costs.

    Lastly, I hope you’ve learnt a lesson from this and your apology is as sincere as it appears to be (though I have to say, mate, it’s hard to take it seriously when it’s followed by “related posts” that include your last ridiculous homophobic beat-up ‘Fairy Jumps a Ferry’. And I can’t help wondering if your contrition is influenced, in part, by the knowledge that Carter could’ve nailed your orca-ass for defamation.

He has been threatened with court and defamation more times than I can name in the last 6 years and has never backed down as in each case he was 100% sure of his facts.He was not threatened by Mr Carter in any way.As soon as it was brought to his attention that his informant had put him wrong he did something about it.

    You’re not seriously suggesting that, in the real world, all you have to do as say sorry when you fuck up? That that’s it – that it’s all okay? If that were the case, there’d never be a successful defamation case – ever, ever – as the defendant would simply just have to say sorry at the last moment. You whatever you liked, then: you could say (insert politician’s name here) is a kiddie-raping goat fucker and you have proof blah blah… only, whoops, you don’t and you’re sorry. End of story.

    Good on your husband for ‘manning up’ and saying sorry. But the accusation was hysterical: Cameron was clearly set up and blundered into the trap. Of course, the only person who can be defamed here is Carter and if he’s chosen to let it go, then, legally, no defamation has taken place. But Cameron’s apology would mean nothing in court.

    Again I ask: Who was the Telco CEO?
