Strange Name Suppression

If ever there was a case of the need for zero name suppression in the interests of justice being seen to be done it would be this case in Wellington.

The son of a high-profile public servant could be too scared to tell the truth after allegedly being punched in the head by his father in downtown Wellington, a court was told today.

The man, whose name and occupation are suppressed, has pleaded not guilty to one charge of assault on a family member over the incident, in Manners Mall in August 2008.

At Wellington District Court today, defence lawyer Mike Antunovic said the man had not punched his son but rather had attempted to remove a bag slung over the boy’s shoulder while in the back seat of a parked car.

The boy had bought the bag after running away with $700 he stole from his mother.

Mr Antunovic said the boy had a history of dishonest and troublesome behaviour and the man was trying just trying to look out for his son.

There is every reason that we should have concern that there is name suppression in this case since the complainant is the son of Wellington District Commander Superintendent Pieri Munro who is on leave, with full pay. This was all reported in the DomPost and the Otago Daily Times more than a year ago. Why the name suppression now?

This has all the hallmarks of something being swept under the carpet by the establishment. A cosy little arrangement to protect a top cop. Justice has to be done for sure, but more importantly it has to be seen to be done and in this case we have a top cop charged with assaulting his son and they are all hiding conveniently under the radar covered by name suppression.

This post goes far beyond my previous Interesting Names series, and that is because I think there is a travesty of justice happening here. I fully expect I’ll get slapped with another charge over this one. However Wellington District Commander Superintendent Pieri Munro has already been in the papers before for this and a quick Google Search proved this.

Yeah good on ya Whale – what a load of crap.
Do the courts have a name suppression slot machine where you put in your $2 worth of lawyer sob story and out pops your automatic name suppression.

Its completely unethical and especially involving a cop.

As a cop (on long term leave) if I were to get pissed while off duty and go out and drink drive or get in a scrap and whack someone then I would be dragged through the system twice once to court for criminal charges and then Police disciplinary hearing where I would be kicked out on my ass no questions asked – and guess who would do this – the District Commander.

Now regardless of the rights and wrongs of giving your son a whack if the DC was just a street cop do you think he would get suppression – no way.

How come in cases involving high ranking members of the Police they get looked after and the basic street cops (who actually do real policing work) get completely exposed to the public.

I wonder if it is because the street cop only gets 50-60K a year and the honourable DC is likely on a package of around 200K

One rule for the haves and one for the have-nots. The courts need a kick up the butt for working to a double standard.

I haven’t followed the case but it seems the son got what he deserved anyway. Didn’t he flog $700 from his mother’s purse.

I agree there should be no suppression and probably no court case. Get the highly paid policeman back on the streets busting p labs and the like.

Does that mean both those publications mentioned are now breaching the name supression?? Surely so, seeing they still have the stories up on their websites??

  • toby

Funny you should mention that, angrywasp, as stuff has removed the article from its website. It was here:

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/2415941/Top-cop-faces-assault-claim

and now that link says page not found. However, if you enter Pieri Munro into their search box, the top entry on the results page looks like this:

    http://hellameke.com/dev/awesome/files/10/munro.gif

The ineptness of stuff is hilarious. They’ll probably remove that search result as well. So what we end up with is censored news. In fact, it could even be court ordered censorship of the news if a name suppression order applies retroactively (which is a stupid idea).

Here’s something for your defense: I just did a Google search for “assault on family member Wellington” and up popped the original Otago Daily Times article, still complete with names and descriptions (the Dom Post piece has been deleted). The search term “assault on family member” came from the article (with names suppressed) that you quoted.

In other words, the Otago Daily Times is committing the same violation you are, so in the interests of justice they will no doubt also be the subject of a police investigation? Apart from that, the Google search I did demonstrates that this link can easily be found without relying on the suppressed information you provided. Ergo, you have published nothing that was not already in the public domain!

New Zealand “justice” has gone beyond the stage of just being a bad joke. It has become a cesspool of corruption, incompetence and sheer stupidity. I don’t like a lot of what you say but I agree with more and more of it. Congratulations for having the balls to stand up to this travesty.

The Dom Post’s deleted piece will still live in hard copies in dozens of libraries and on microfilms all around the world.

Will the S-G now send out gangs of clippers to excise the printed record. Would not surprise me if the dork did.

Could libraries be charged for allowing access to items carrying suppressed reports?

Hey Oil, when are you due in court and what will you be done for?
