Charging private expenses to the ratepayer

Leigh Auton - Greedy Little PiggyDuring Looney Len’s mad rant at a council meeting and in the subsequent 3 weeks of furor over his expenses, he constantly referred to the robust procedures and checks and balances that existed at his council regarding expenses. This despite him only once in 25 months signing off his own expenses and claiming personal items, while not following council policy and providing proper tax invoices or naming people he dined with at the rate payers expense.

A look through Leigh Auton’s expenses shows an alarming similarity in charging personal expenditure to the ratepayers. Clearly there is a culture of entitlement at Manukau City, that one can only assume has come from the top, through the Mayor and his CEO.

Leigh Auton is on two boards outside of council responsibilities. One is the Counties Manukau Zone Board for NZ Rugby League and the other is the Ngapuhi Asset Holding Company Limited. These board positions are in his private capacity and unrelated in anyway to his council position.

it is perhaps not unsurprising, that with Leigh Auton on the board that the Ngapuhi Asset Holding Company Limited has run into some controversy itself. After all this professional director and CEO finds it difficult to determine which expenses lie where.

Leigh Auton thinks nothing of charging expenses related to these two boards to the ever patient ratepayers of Manukau. Worse still, every single one of these incorrectly charged expenses is ticked and signed off by the “robust audit procedures” that Len Brown has spoken of constantly.

Remember as you look through the following images of his private expenses being billed to the ratepayer of Manukau that this man is paid $450,000 per annum and still he thinks that his employer should pick up the tab for his parking at private business meetings. Imagine the thought processes involved in thinking that this is somehow related to Manukau City Council business. Each and every one of these expenses was ticked off and approved. It says a great deal about the robust audit processes that Len Brown waxed lyrical about. What you are witnessing is a culture of entitlitis, bred from the top by Len Brown and Leigh Auton.

Keep digging and spilling the beans Cam. This is a man who earns around TEN TIMES the average wage, but he’s too tight to pay for things himself. I wonder how families like the Muliaga family, living on the breadline in Mangere, Otara, Otahuhu etc feel when they read about troughing such as this.

Roger McClay, the ex-MP and Childrens’ Commissioner is facing $21,000 of criminal fraud charges for misusing taxpayer money for commercial purposes.

Auton’s claims should be scrutinised because the billing style seems similar – charge an expense to an organisation that is not responsible for it.

  • ummmm

Entitlitis – ha. Did they catch it from you? Malingerer applying for the sickness benefit = entitlitis = pot, kettle, black.

Well done Whale, I wish I had your contacts my friend.

Please continue to release on a day by day basis. If anyone deserves the death by a thousand cuts style you bring to the blogosphere, it’s troughing hypocrites like this one!

  • cheshirecat

@Inventory2; I hope that Mr McClay’s troughing isn’t being ignored on this blog because he’s an ex-National MP. He’s just another fucking thieving trougher.

I imagine MPs in Colombia are envying their ‘honourable’ parliamentary colleagues in this banana republic for the freedom they enjoy in sucking on the public tit

@cheshirecat – this is Whale’s blog, so he sets the agenda. The McClay case is before the courts; if he is convicted, you can guarantee that Keeping Stock will have something to say about it.
