Why the Mayoral contenders must come clean about their deputy

Both Len Brown and John Banks need to come clean with voters.

Who will be their choice for Deputy Mayor?

This is important because the legislation places the burden of choice upon the elected Mayor to choose their own deputy. It is becoming clear that Len Brown has promised that position or at least the Chair of an important committee to Andrew Williams meaning that Andrew Williams would be just a heart beat away from the Mayoralty of Auckland in the event Len Brown won.

Noth Len Brown and John Banks need to make it clear to the citizens of Auckland who their preference is for deputy so that voters can know what they are getting.

The legislation says that we should be worried.

3) For the purposes of subsections (1) and (2), the mayor has the following powers:

(a) to establish processes and mechanisms for the Auckland Council to engage with the people of Auckland, whether generally or particularly (for example, the people of a cultural, ethnic, geographic, or other community of interest):
(b) to appoint the deputy mayor:
(c) to establish committees of the governing body:
(d) to appoint the chairperson of each committee of the governing body and, for that purpose, the mayor—

(i) may make the appointment before the other members of the committee are determined; and

(ii) may appoint himself or herself:

(e) to establish and maintain an appropriately staffed office of the mayor.

Of course you can avoid all that mess by Voting for Slater in Albany and booting the Clown of Campbells Bay into obscurity.

Meanwhile I call on john Banks and Len Brown to clear up who their preferred candidates are for Deputy Mayor.

I wonder whether the coverage of Andrew’s latest outburst at Banks is going to be overall a plus or a minus, for the Len-Andrew ticket?

Possibly it may have been better if Andrew hadn’t done anything whatsoever.

Andrew are you sure you don’t want to hire me as your Campaign Advisor?

You have to admit, my track record thus far has been 100% accurate and had you followed my recommendations, overall the Len-Andrew ticket would have been much better off.

If perchance you refuse to acknowledge this because for some reason you can’t face reality, then Len, if you read this, have a look at my record through these archives, and let me know if you want my contact details via a message drop back here.

    Kind regards,
    reid

    P.S. Good luck.

    heartbeat from the mayoraly ?
Not likely as under out system the deputy mayor does not suceed on a death ( or resignation) from a Mayor.
The only way a deputy can be become Mayor is by winning a by election.
And while the Mayor is out of town , the deputy merely become acting Chairman of the Council meetings ( a bit like herding cats)
A beat up here Whale, as the deputy is no heartbeat .
David Hay when deputy Mayor of Auckland actually weilded more power than the Mayor as he rules the C&R caucus. A situation they will probably not change as the leader of the largest group in the Council will be more powerful than the mayor anyway. Woe betide the Mayor who doesnt make this person Deputy Mayor

Glad to see you admitting that C&R will be controlling the next council.
