More Mates #eqnz

Lion Foundation are Mates. The Lion Foundation has confirmed $5 million of additional support for the people of Christchurch.

The Lion Foundation Chairman, Mike Smith said: “The Lion Foundation will work with the Government and the Christchurch City Council to ensure the most appropriate distribution of the funds. Our intention is for the majority of the funds to be provided to individuals, families and members of the community who remain in need. Our aim is to make a difference,”

“Along with all New Zealanders, we would also like to pay tribute to all the people within the emergency services, armed services, and volunteers who are working so very hard to save lives and improve the situation,” Mr Smith said.

It would be good if DB aligned charities would pony up a similar amount.

While we are at asking for cash, BAT and Phillip Morris could chuck some in too. Matching the Lion Foundation would be a good start.

That is thoroughly wonderful from the Lion Foundation! And a wonderful commitment to ChCh and Canterbury’s re-building. We should **all** rememeber such generosity.

I would love to see other Corporates in NZ show the same generosity and compassion, including Fonterra … I know they’ve done amazing things on the ground in CHCH with water shipping, water storage and distribution (YAY FONTERRA!!). But those costs surely number [generously] in the 300 – 500 thousands of dollars. This being said, Fonterra also promised a $1M cash contribution.

My request to all the Farmer/Shareholders out there right now would be:

Please people, you are decent Men and Women. If you’re Farmers, then you’ve never shrunk from a challenge in good times (e.g. with bloat) or in bad times (e.g. in drought)!

All of you, together; have the [collective] power to force Fonterra’s board into supporting Christchurch right now !

Do it Kiwi Farmers, and then be proud.

Forgive me if I am wrong, But I thought the Lion Foundation was not related to Lion Breweries. However, given the amount of booze and tobacco Christchurch consumes, you would think the alcohol and tobacco industry would chip in.

Canterbury farmers are Mates. They’re donating in kind – eg, machinery to help remove the liquefaction ejecta.

Are you suggesting that Fonterra effectively reduces the milk solids payout? – afterall, any cash donations have to come out of earnings, right? Reduce Fonterra’s payouts; reduce dairy farmers’ incomes; Canterbury framers have less to spend – in Chch (heard of the multiplier effect?).

        hey sandynobb,
I was typing in a hurry on my phone – I was actually trying to acknowledge the fact that Canterbury Farmers (by themselves and totally independent of Fonterra) have done a heck of a job supporting ChCh with (as you point out) machinery etc.

I still believe that Fonterra (the corporate) could do more based purely on their market cap vs. the market cap of other businesses etc and comparative giving levels.
