Useless

UselessUseless is what our current laws are when a creepy pedo is hiding himself behind name suppression laws.

Name suppression has been granted to a 33-year-old Napier man facing a raft of indecency charges after police found thousands of images of local children on his computer.

The unemployed Onekawa man appeared before Judge Geoff Rea in Napier District Court facing six charges of doing an indecent act.

His arrest came early this morning after police were tipped off by the public to a potential sighting of the man, who had been seen taking photos while driving past schools on a number of occasions in the past few weeks.

On both prior occasions he was reported to have been in a silver car.

Police found the man in his car at the Maadi Rd, Onekawa, shops shortly after 8.30am and had to use pepper spray after he became aggressive. A camera was found in his possession.

Detective Sergeant Tim Smith said police searched the man’s home shortly after his arrest and found around 1200 images of young girls and mothers walking babies on a USB stick as well as “objectionable” material on CDs and DVDs.

It appears the photos were taken locally as well as in Taupo said Mr Smith.

He asked for name suppression so he could inform his family and his soon to be ex-girlfriend.

I thought that was what newspapers were for?

I know that is creepy and everything…but since when is it illegal to take photos of people in a public place?

Sometimes Jacqueline ,life just aint fair ,but better some fucking pedo gets his rights infringed rather than an innocent child ,don`t shed any tears for this scumbag.

No…i’m not…and the name suppression sucks…but my mind just kind of looked outside the square here, i guess, and wondered on what grounds the police arrested him and searched him, in the first place. Perhaps that is why he received name suppression because it doesn’t seem that he would have received it in order to not identity any victims – which is the usual excuse in cases like this.

      A very odd story…

It would be useless if the man still had name suppression after he was tried and convicted.

Just being charged does not equal being guilty.

While my gut tells me that this guy will probably end up being guilty, if there is even the off chance that he is found innocent, then name suppression will prevent an innocent man from having his life ruined.

In these sorts of cases, I am fully in support of name suppression of charged persons, until they are found guilty. When they are, I believe name suppression should be lifted if it does not negatively impact any victims. If they are innocent, or naming the person negatively impacts the victims, I believe it should remain.

Name suppression may be over used in NZ, but Whale’s seemingly blanket hate of name suppression seems idiotic to me.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Say what you like about pedophiles, but at least they drive slow around schools.
