Some people just don’t think through the consequences of their actions.

At Gawker, Brooklyn-based journalist Caitlin Curran explains how you could quickly go from being part of the downtrodden 99% to being part of the “no, really, unemployed and utterly fucked” contingent: your boss could see a photo of you holding up a sign at a protest and fire you the next day. Ms. Curran is the woman in the photo above, feature in two previous Boing Boing posts.

    What part of this woman’s actions warrant the “hippie of the day” reference? I read the post and the related posts including an explanation of what she was doing and why. The words are someone else’s but make a lot of sense – it was wrong to do what those investment banks did. Cam, are you arguing that the words are wrong, and investment banks/sharp brokers are entitled to sell virtually worthless securities backed by mortgages almost certain to default? Are you arguing that people aren’t allowed to protest against that behaviour (which, let’s face it, has contributed to the biggest global financial crisis in over 80 years)? Or is it just a bit of schadenfreude that she held up the sign for a few minutes, her photo got taken and due to the viral nature of the internet and social media, her boss saw it and fired her? Perhaps the real problem is that she’s a journalist rather than a hippie and we know you don’t like journalists, but a bit of research may have given this post a different slant.

      I am saying that she attended the hippie protest and thought there would be no consequences. Unfortunately there are consequences.

        If you’re suggesting that she didn’t think she’d be fired for exercising her right to free speech in a non-political and peaceful way, then I tend to agree. But it’s hardly a reasonable consequence – to me it’s a bit like saying if you walk down the street and someone doesn’t like the look of you and decides to thump you, then you’re a bit stupid for thinking there would be no consequences when venturing out in public, and let’s all have a laugh. From what I can see and have read, there was nothing offensive or provocative about her behaviour, and her sign is reasonable and true. But it takes all sorts.

      I like the part where she explains why she was carrying the sign. Her boyfriend Will suffered “sign-holding fatigue” so she ended up carrying it.
