I bet Phil Goff would say no too

hat tip Heine

People like Phil Goff, Gareth Morgan and Selwyn Pellett like to tell everyone that the rich need to pay higher taxes. That higher taxes will solve all our problems. The thing is they arrange and structure themselves so that they don’t practice what they preach.

The next time Phil Goff talks about the wealthy paying more taxes why don’t reporters ask him if he would voluntarily do so if National won the election and kept tax rates the same.

In the US taxpayers can voluntarily pay more tax by filling out a simple form. Watch what happens when someone goes up to the US equivalent of Selwyn Pellett and asks them to pay more taxes.

Two dozen “patriotic millionaires” traveled to the national’s capital on Wednesday to demand that Congress raise taxes on wealthy Americans.

The Daily Caller attended their press conference with an iPad, which displayed the Treasury Department’s donation page, to find out if any of the “patriotic millionaires” were willing to put their money where their mouth is.

And if Phil Goff, Gaweth Mowgan and Selwyn Pellet do agree to volutarily pay more taxes, what then Dear Whale?  The implied benefits of progressive taxation are neither strengthened nor weakened by hypocrasy, either real or perceived, on the part of it’s advocates.

Play the ball and not the man Dear Whale.

@b2395c1921196e06344be82c217c93a7:disqus That is the point, they don’t voluntarily donate extra taxation. Instead they choose to donate to charity or other causes where they can see the organisation is providing VALUE, rather than being churned throught govt depts.

No, the point was really just a barb at Phil Goff, Gaweth Mowgan and Selwyn Pellet supposedly saying one thing and doing another.  It has little to do with the merits of progressive taxation.

Define VALUE MrV.  Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a nice starting point for that endless journey.

I beleive JK is paying 100% tax already. Is it not true he donates his salary to charity ?

A government donation page to “help reduce public debt”?  A debt that is incurred by decisions to wage war in Afghanistan and Iraq?  A debt in a country where a armed forces procured hammer is 400% more expensive than walking into the local shop and buying one?

Who would donate into that black hole?

It makes much more sense to target philanthropy by funding innovative or infrastructural education, for example.  (hat tip to Mr B Gates)

Pour a billion US into the national public debt and what is the result?  Nothing at all.

    • RightNow

So you’re saying increasing taxes is only going to support stuff like waging wars, and that targeted philanthropy is better?  I agree, it makes the argument for higher taxes redundant.

People would rather give their money to something tangeble or something that promotes and rewards excellence. Seeing it being pissed down the black hole of mediocrity is no incentive to wnat to pay more taxes. I would rather donate money to charities and programmes of my choice than pay higher taxes where I have no control over where the money is spent.

What a great idea we can TAX ourselves to prosperity. If that was the case why are we slipping further down the world rankings.
If you want to increase your wealth, regardless of who or what you are.
    1.       Earn More
    2.       Spend Less than you earn
    3.       Borrow only for income producing assets where the ROI is higher than the interest.
    4.       Don’t borrow or sell assets to fund anything that does not have a return
One man, One vote, One TAX and everyone contributes and pays. No taxation without representation. Did I forget to mention FFS keep it simple stupid.
