John Key is, will you?

John Key is going to vote to get rid of MMP in the referendum, will you?

Anyone still pondering (rather than having already made up their mind) should simply ask themselves (a) Do they like the idea of Winston Peters being in Parliament? (b) Do they like the idea that the same Winston Peters could actually select the next Prime Minister? (c) Do they like the idea that a party that has been rejected by (say) 94% of the electorate can have its policies set in place as part of a coalition deal? You’ll get my drift. MMP is a sick joke being inflicted on New Zealand and it needs to be dumped at the earliest opportunity – which just happens to be in 12 days time!

Luigi, no matter what voting system you have, a polarising personality like Winston Peters can upset what is perceived as the natural balance of things.

I think your reasons are emotional and one-sided.  And frankly, your thinking processes “Do they like the idea that a party that has been rejected by (say) 94% of the electorate can have its policies set in place as part of a coalition deal?” aren’t up to scratch to provide credible comments on this blog.MMP, or any other voting method, is a system. A system with advantages and disadvantages depending on your particular expectations at the time.  No other system is better, or fairer for every participant.  It will simply provide a different way for parties to push the boundaries in ways that you hadn’t anticipated.(there… that’ll set the cat among the pigeons)

Petal: No emotion behind my comment – just my opinion. All you have done is confirm that MMP is nothing more than a system that allows a party that has only received (say) 6% of the vote, to expect policies being embraced as part of a coalition deal. And thats wrong.

But yes, I’m not Peters fanbase manager – mainly because I cannot forget how he played one party off against the other and held the country to ransom for weeks whilst screwing the best deal (for him). That farce was a direct by-product of MMP. But it could equally be the Maori Party deciding who’ll be the next PM – its that principle that is wrong.

Having an eclectic representation in parliament is fine – but we should not allow the tail to wag the dog and turn out to be the kingmaker. And thats one of the reasons I don’t like MMP.

Perfectly stated. Couldn’t agree more. Pigoens completely unconcerned by lame cat.

Having an eclectic representation in parliament is fine

No, it’s not. It’s really not. Only parties supporting democracy and free enterprise and personal and national responsibility should be in Parliament.

Yep – centre-left ACT majority government with a centre-right Conservative opposition is what NZ would have if good governance had any input into NZ’s electoral system whatsoever.

In his 2025 taskforce reports, Brash recommended a “fiscal council” to ensure that irresponsible parties and policies were constitutionally prohibited from politics and government.

This election, once again, shows why that is not just necessary but absolutely essential.

Is that not Fascism and an oxymoron right off the bat?

Supporting Democracy, Free Enterprise you say? If you allowed democracy as you want then someone should be able to “represent” in Parliament the view of Social Liberalism and all that it curtails (which would be the opposite of the extreme Neo-Liberalism you advocate)?

            Heard it all before…

The Nats have an arrangement that each candidate individually supports supplementary member but thinks its wrong for the party to say so.
They have a problem with ethics.
Look at the issues raised because they have put a candidate in Epsom while encouraging Epsom voters to support the ACT candidate. Mr Key will vote for the National candidate while asking Epsom Nat supporters to vote for the ACT candidate. What is the definition of hypocrisy?

    out with MMP is say!

  • Evan Johnson

MMP will be comfortably preserved.  John Banks will win a safe National seat for the ACT Party.  Don Brash back to the kiwifruit – sorry about that old chap.  When given adequate information New Zealanders vote for fairness.  When individuals like Key and Banks try to undermine a democracy they should be championing, they see it for what it is.

Sorry about that Cameron.  Its all bad news.  Except you will get your National led government naturally!  Don’t sulk will you!

I am not voting for change, I like MMP because it is fair.

  • Ben Ross

MMP will most likely stay and Guest’s dreams will stay that – dreams.

I know which system I am voting for to :-D

“Out with MMP”, I say.  PV looks bloody good to me. You can rank the candidates but you’re unlikely to get the losers like the Mana Party in Parliament.

What planet do you live on?

Fat with china: labour and Phil goff did that deal
Adidas jerseys: labour was government when that happened
Maori party: he is in coalition with them
So far not a single thing right, the rest of your rant is just plain ignorant.
