Massive beat up on our troops by 3News

Tv3 ran a news story last night about a supposed alcohol problem amongst our troops in the NZDF.

They cited 500 drinking related offences over 5 years. That is just 100 per year out of total of 10,000 troops or just 1%. They have 61 bars, that’s one and half bar incidents a year per bar. What a massive beat-up of a non-problem. Who are the wowsers that fed this crap to to 3News?

It is a massive over reaction and actually poor reporting on the part of 3 News.

When you compare the NZDF with the rest of New Zealand it is actually the rest of New Zealand that has the drinking problem not the NZDF.

In New Zealand a third of crimes in 2007-2008 were carried out by a person affected by alcohol and in serious offences, such as homicides, it was about half of cases.

Each year police here take 21,000 drunk people home or to the cells because they cannot remember where they live.

In fact if you look at Police crime statistics you can see public disorder offences (like disorderly conduct) which are highly likely to involve alcohol for the past year were well over 40,000, for just one year.

500 offences by the NZDF over 5 years seems small beer if you ask me. A total beat-up by 3News, they should actually apologise to the NZDF.

A beat up echoed this morning by Newstalk ZB. I wonder how the Press Club bar and pubs frequented by journos rate on the scale of 10. The wowsers that fed this crap were bad enough but the hypocrisy of the journos who chose to make it a major news item are hypocrisy personified. One of the issues is that the troops booze is too cheap – ha! Most journos expect their booze for free.

Don’t know where they get their numbers from. The navy has 3 bars, total.
“They run happy hours, alcohol can be given away as prizes and alcohol promotion parties are run by alcohol suppliers.” Bullshit. This is specifically forbidden in base standing orders.

Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good beat up though.

4 bars on each of the three bases for the airforce, (junior ranks, wo’s and sncos, officers, and a sports bar which is seldom open save for functions)
Its my belief the army would have much the same arrangement on bases waiuru, linton, trentham and burnham.
Alcohol promotion does not happen, the clubs are forbidden by standing orders to procure alcohol via any source save for the armed forces canteen council. No direct dealings with suppliers, no promotion parties, not even promo girls.

Poorly researched, and a blatent smear from 3news and Professor Douglas Sellman

Spiker, in my past life I have hosted journos junkets. Those bastards never, ever put their hands in their pockets to pay for drinks. I can recall being in Singapore with a group of journos and I had arranged to meet them in the hotel bar at 6pm. I was 30 minutes late and when I arrived not one, repeat not one had put their hands in their pockets to buy a drink. Couldn’t believe it – and then of course they all got totally pissed at my expense. Never forgotten it & that’s why this particular story has gotten right up my nose.

Sorry WO if you happen to be an ex-journo.
