5.8 Quake in Christchurch

Christchurch has suffered another large earthquake:

There has been a large earthquake in Christchurch this afternoon. The quake was described as “violent” by Herald reporter Jarrod Booker who was in his home when the quake hit.

It was quickly followed by at least four strong aftershocks. Geonet said the quake measured 5.8 on the Richter Scale, at a depth of just 8km. It struck just off the coast of Pegasus Bay at 1.58pm.

There have been several strong aftershocks following the intial quake.

Damage from the quake is unknown, but it was felt as far away as Mosgiel near Dunedin.

I wonder what the chances are of Christchurch becoming a ghost town. If this keeps happening, no-one will want to live there. Why live in a place where you can’t get a good night’s sleep because the house keeps shaking? Bugger that…

Chances of Chch becoming a ghost town.  0.

Short answer – most people have no choice, thery have a mortgage, still got to pay insurance and rates and its a case of making best of a rotten situation.  But thanks for your thoughts.

I’ve spent a good chunk of this afternoon on the phone/txt to family, friends and staff down there. What an absolute shit of a time for the slumbering giant to wake up again.

Lost the rest of my breakables, thankfully power back on and the cat has finally come home. Shelf fell over in the garage and my beemer has been munted down the drivers side.
hey Whale if you have anything from breaking into Labours donors list how about cheering up a cantab by releasing something juicy gossip as an early Christmas pressie. Either that or maybe some compromising pics of Parker’s husband Jo that the CEO of CHCHC has that he used to blackmailing the mayor into a 14% pay rise.

Good on ya, David! I know it’ll be hard, but have a great Christmas!

Poor Cantabrians; they must be so strong to put up with this for such a long time. Really admire their resilience and determination to see it out. Unfortunately, most probaby have no choice. Should be some relocation govt aided assistance.

Woke about two hours ago to the sound of running water. The cold feed to the hot water cylinder had split during the latest overnight tremors. Water for fucking Africa!

Just finished cleaning it up. Fuck it! Is 3.30am to early to crack open a cold one?

Do it! It’s 5pm somewhere in the world :)

Well here we go again – a night from hell – the aftershocks have continued since 2.00pm Friday - think we have at least six more since 5.30am Saturday - so it’s back to grabbing a nap in your clothes throughout the night, having bottles of water on hand, the torch close by and the personals bag ready to go at any moment – Happy Christmas from Christchurch.
