Being Offended

I saw a number of articles on the weekend about people being offended. There was the case of the woman upset at drinking games being sold:

The sale of a drinking game by major retail stores has been labelled irresponsible and as promoting excessive drinking.

Masterton woman Lyn McDonald said she was disappointed to see drinking games on sale in several local stores.

“I just thought that given the reputation us Kiwis have got with drinking, I don’t think they should be selling them,” she said.

“I don’t understand where the responsibility is in promoting drinking games when [alcohol is] a dangerous substance.”

Mrs McDonald said with so much information about the negative effects of alcohol, the sale of drinking games seemed inappropriate.

Of course there were also people offended at Jeremy Clarkson’s comments on suicide and a major union has called for his sacking because they are offended at his comments about striking workers.

There are far too many people having a whinge and cry about being offended. Here is a little video to help them with their affliction.

Maybe Lyn McDonald just needs some counselling to get over it. State-funded of course.
Nanny statism is still alive & well in Masterton.

Everyone has the right to be offended. It’s meaningless, self indulgent and vacuous. We should encourage people to exercise this right, so we can better exercise our rights of disassociation.

I remember watching that clip before a couple of times and it definitely makes you think about the ridiculousness of being offended. The Jeremy Clarkson thing is totally ridiculous. No one was shot and I’m sure he wouldn’t support it. But this woman didn’t say she was offended, so I don’t really see the between her and the other cases and the youtube clip. She doesn’t think its a good idea to promote drinking games for what ever reasons. She wasn’t offended by what someone said

What I struggle with is people who run to the media every time their feelings are hurt or they don’t like something. Why do they think their opinion is worth being thrown at everyone? I think it’s a little self indulgent to assume the rest of the country cares if you think selling drinking games is a bad idea.

I struggle with people that do this too….but I’ve not heard of her so assume she hasn’t run off the media much in the past. I don’t even know if she did go to the media, often its the media that come running  to people with opinions

She had an opinion that some people agree with, some don’t, the media printed it….that’s fine. Its about something I didn’t know about…I’m not even sure I care about that much….but I did learn something and have the option now to care about it if I wanted to.

Most things in the media aren’t that interesting to me but its my problem if I consume then and its my problem if I get annoyed about it.

Yup I agree… the old saying “don’t sweat the small stuff” comes to mind and I follow that line on pretty much everything these days – great for preventing stress :)
