Shearer: Focused on things that matter

Since the media and the Labour party are wanting their leadership battle conducted in public then I think it is incumbent on those of us deeply immersed in politics to bring to the fore the beliefs and policies that the candidates support. Since the media don’t seem to want to do the in depth analysis and because they have written off David Cunliffe, it is only proper that we look into the incredibly short political career of David Shearer:

Forget the economy, Labour’s favourite leadership contender has far more important issues on his mind.

Why else would David Shearer have used his maiden speech in Parliament to advocate changing the flag?

Of course he’s only been in Parliament a short time, but he has a surprising amount of baggage, such as his plan to decriminalise and regulate cannabis, and link the minimum wage to the average wage.

Good to see he’s focused on the things that will really make a difference.

Another leftie one time school teacher.

He’s taking unnecessary risks by supporting a change of flag, republicanism & the decriminalisation of cannabis. All are contentious issues and likely to alienate a very significant proportion of the swinging centrist vote that labour just has to secure. The hard issues are the economy, GFC Mk 2, trade - not social issues that are largely conscience vote matters anyway. Or will we see more unilateral decisions from Shearer redolent of cutting our ties with the Privy Council. Is Shearer really Hulun by remote?

I do not want to debate the wrongs and rights of republicanism but that hard fact is that a majority supports the retention of the monarchy. It isnt an issue that labour should die in the ditch over. Just unnecessary political risk by Shearer. He really needs to tidy his political act very quickly.

The hard fact is that labour does not have a potential PM in its ranks. Cunliffe has the smarts to do it but his arrogance & sense of entitlement overrides all of his positives.
