Some people are just scum

Sue Bradford’s law that she told parliament would ensure the kiddies were protected has failed another child. There really should be a Sue Bradford Wall of Shame with which to place the names of children who were beaten, bashed, tortured and killed but were never protected by her law.

A Rotorua boy assaulted by a woman with a broom has been described by mental health authorities as one of the most emotionally damaged children they have seen.

Bonita Naera (aka Marsters), 57, was yesterday sentenced in the Rotorua District Court to two years in jail after being found guilty by a jury in October of assaulting a child in her care with a weapon between August 1 and August 18, 2009.

Judge Phillip Cooper said Naera hit the child with a length of wood or possibly a broom and the child, who was 7 at the time, suffered a broken arm.

Naera had two previous convictions for assaulting children, dating back 18 years.

Jail is too good for people who do that to children. Two years is certainly not long enough for the systematic emotional, psychological and physical torture visited upon her children.

The sentiment in regard to punishment is fine, but the other stuff is just ridiculous in insinuating that this is anything to do with Bradfords bill.

If anything the fact she was convicted and couldn’t claim parental discipline is a reflection that Bradfords law is working as intended. That and the other people who have been prosecuted for beating kids as a result of it as well.

Rubbsih. I remember Bradford going on telly and saying her law change would have a massive impact on reducing child abuse.
I remember her basicly calling the good parents of NZ child abusers.

Well guess what Bradford, your plan has failed. BIG TIME.

IMO dumping the smacking changes made is not the only thing required. Life means life jail sentences would be a good addition to the law books, and in cases where kids are killed, I am all for bringing back the death sentence.

Thats a very unsocial thing to say Kosh. Rubbing off on you are we?

      • Jam_Sammie

Good God, did you accidentally put a blue tie on this morning Kosh? Thais the most sensible thing you have said for weeks. Perhaps there is hope for you yet!

      • Kosh103

When it comes to people who harm children I make Attlia the Hun look like a fairy princess.

      • NormJones

dont often agree with Kosh..in fact i never do..but big high 5 on this one…well said

I totally agree – does Sue Bradford not understand that it was always illegal to beat a child to death? One more law to break isn’t going to worry people who think beating a child with a broom stick is acceptable.

The best result our country could have got was that scumbag being found guilty of murder yesterday – that sets a precedent for all child killers, they won’t just get off with manslaughter any more. Now the punishment needs to be hard – 20+ years in prison. Taking the life of an innocent child is despicable and abhorrent and there aren’t even enough words to describe how much those people make me sick.

      • Dyannt

Good heavens, Kosh. We agree on something. :-)

What a load of rubbish Oscartwirl. The woman would have been convicted under the old law as many were, because the force used for correction was unreasonable. What has changed is that not only is unreasonable force illegal, but so is reasonable force such as the smack on the hand or backside. That is why New Zealanders are opposed to her unnecessary and undemocratic law.

  • Exclamation Mark

^^^ What a load of shit – show us one instance where someone has beaten a childen with a weapon causing broken bones and been let off prior to the repeal of S59

  • Thorn

The Maori sterotype is reinforced yet again.

    • Kosh103

      Sadly – yes.

      • Gazzaw

        Well said Kosh!!

National did have the opportunity to get rid of the most ineffective, unwanted piece of rubbish law I have ever seen and apposed by the majority of New Zealanders. All I herd or saw from NONKey was a lot of dribble.

    • Kosh103

Key ended up voting for it and pretending he had made some big deal to make it less dammaging to parents.

Up to that point he had actually impressed me as a leader (not that I agreed with anything he stood for, but thats different). Had zero time for him after that.

  • The Gantt Guy

Just a small correction, Whale. This is NOT Sue Bradford’s law, it is John Key’s. It is John Key’s law and it should be John Key’s Wall of Shame. This travesty, this mockery of the democratic process, would have never got legs had John Key not swung the Nats in behind it. And it would not still be on the books had he bothered listening to the 88%of his employers who told him loud and clear to repeal it.

This is John Key’s law, John Key’s failure and John Key’s shame. Pinning the blame on the Commie Comrade Bradford is disingenuous at best, outright lying at worst.
