Welfare mentality now covers Television

Welfare was once a wonderful safety net where taxpayers paid to ensure no one missed out on the essentials of life.

Here is a reminder of just how out-of-hand  the fostered entitlement mentality has become:

Up to 60,000 disadvantaged television viewers may be provided with digital set-top boxes paid for by the Government so they can continue watching television when analogue transmissions are shut next year and in 2013, an official says.

Here’s a thought, instead of sitting on their arse growing mould and watching television how about they get up of the couch and do something useful with their miserable lives.

There is sound political reasoning for this. Far better to have people watching television than causing political and social trouble. George Orwell made this point in “1984″, where the state provided television entertainment called ‘prolefeed’ (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prolefeed  ) to keep the masses happy and out of mischief.

However there could be a case for the Government to subsidise ‘pay’ channels showing content of an improving and uplifting nature for prisoners, beneficiaries and Super Gold card holders.

A fucking disgrace – this plan should be cancelled immediately.  Cam, how about an OIA request for the number of beneficiaries who get Sky for free/discounted?

How else will the populace get to hear the ‘Party Political Broadcast for the in 2014 without their beloved idiot box.

Sorry: – Insert Party Name here.

I’m learning to paint (as in paintings you hang on the wall) in the 1-2 hours a night I reclaimed from the television. I’ve even managed to sell a couple of them, although not enough to cover the cost of the art supplies yet. Best thing I ever did.

People who “miss out” on television when the analogue is gone should take the opportunity to do something useful with the new-found time in their day. Personally I find painting to be just as relaxing as watching the box – it fritters away the time equally well but you get something tangible at the end and you are building a skill.

I hope this wonderful gesture to the disadvantaged will include the blind.
