Whaleoil Awards – Best Journo

Plenty of comments yesterday on the nomination post, though very few nominations.

The nominees are:

John Armstrong: for good all round fair commentary.

Fran O’Sullivan: “for her constant pressure on National and JK to HARDEN UP , ditch silly Labour polices and actually be aspirational / visionary as promised.”

Sean Plunket: for calling Phil Goff on his claims about Police numbers during the election campaign.

None: Many commenters simply couldn;t name a journalist that deserved any award, let alone a “Best” Award.

John Armstrong lost years of credibility by his press vs public stance on the Epsom tea-tapes non-story. As he dominates the political commentary of the monopoly daily, he bears heavy responsibility to ensure that the fourth estate performs its vital constitutional function. But he loses all objectivity when it comes to the ACT party, or when the media itself becomes a player.

How can Armstrong be considered as anything apart from a left wing commentator, with rare outbreaks of centrism, perhaps to fill a quota?
