Word of the Day – Back-story

Back-story

A word political wankers and beltway felchers like to use to talk about someone’s past without actually talking about their past.

Usage: “David Shearer has a great back-story.”

The back-story Labour wants us to hear won’t include that he was number 63 on Labour’s list in 1999, he stood in Whangarei in 2002 and got spanked by Phil Heatley even though Bill English was “Goffing” National at the time, then he trotted off overseas scoring the big bucks, tax free, from the UN. The only Labour MP in parliament currently who has lost more than Shearer is Sue Moroney. Don’t forget that he had the third worst party vote result (-5.5%) in Auckland this election, only Jacinda Ardern and the nobody in Rodney were worse. Bet they miss out all that from his back-story.

But since we all have to look at Shearer’s backstory let’s, what about the back-story of the other Helengnomes Grant Robertson, Chris Hipkins and Jacinda Ardern. These people are all touted as future leaders and front bench contenders for next week.

Let’s hear about their backstories shall we?

Since Labour is wanting to fill in the back-story then let’s do it properly

They love to talk up how he was “dodging bullets to bring food to desperate people” but in the end this was all about spending other people’s money.

Someone else paid his tax-free salary, someone else paid for the food, someone else provided the transport, the fuel, everything. All from other people’s taxes. I wonder what percentage of the money it cost to get the food to those people was actually the cost of the food.

The people I have respect for are those that raise the money themselves, to go to an underprivileged community in the South Pacific and dig a well, or build a school. They are unpaid during their time away.

Those acts last well beyond the 10 minutes it takes for the food to be eaten, or more likely, stolen by those with guns.

You might find there will be a reaction against Shearer’s “back-story,” especially when he continually self promotes.

Let’s face it, how many of us truly aspire to be helping people – and putting ourselves in danger - in remote parts of the world; we probably feel guilty that we don’t, so would prefer not to be reminded of it.

Shearer was New Zealander of the year for his work running a refugee camp in Somalia in 92.

So he didnt ‘trot off’ in 02 as you say, he had 10 years of that by then.

Havent you left out the word mercenary in Sabins ‘back story’. he did it for the money!

“A real star on the international stage” its a joke.

Fuck off Tart, your yapping is getting annoying.

        Banhammer, Boss Robert?

      • Roger

And Tart – you got the wrong guy – it was Mitchell I think your vitriol refers. You’re  an absolute banker

  • Peter Wilson

My understanding was that Shearer was the (NZ Herald) New Zealander of the year – along with his wife.

Don’t get me wrong, it sounds like Shearer is an outstanding NZer, but he’s in politics now and is unashamedly self-promoting his “back-story.”

It makes him fair game unfortunately for any inconsistencies or exaggerations by him or his supporters. Think of the nastiness that was sent Key’s way when he was on the rise.

Wonder why he didnt just go to South Auckland a Labour Party stronghold. As we are led to believe thousands of children in that area are living in poverty.Going elsewhere seemed dumb, surely charity begins at home.

    • Roger

Coz it doesn’t pay in tax free US$

  • Mediatart

He did teach at a South Auckland secondary school. Tick that one as well

    • Roger

Tart Massey High where he was a teacher is in the West – you need a new compass. He was taught at Papatoetoe High. I’d be interested if he was Dux. Anyone know how the sheep plucker travelled at school?

Have a mate whose son flies UN aid into North Africa out of Italy. He’s home most nights in a beaut villa paid for by the UN as are all of the family expenses including the kids schooling. His tax free UN package is way better than that of an airline pilot.

Can you imagine what sort of package Carter is on?

    • Rwm

      Carter’s would be a Back-entry story I would think.

      • Roger

As I’ve read here of late – manhole inspectors in Kabul would need danger money. Gassey you know.

    • Mark

“Can you imagine what sort of package Carter is on?”

Carter’s been on many a package in his time…

Not to be confused with back-door story, reserved for those leaving Annette Kings apartment.

Jacinda Ardern’s back-story – well known horse trainer who gains the co-operation of horses simply by smiling, should leave politicians and follow her true vocation.  Seriously tho, she is a Clark fan big time, always has been and will re-introduce that kind of politics to the front bench given a chance.  Her social engineering ideas are boring and annoying.
