Obama Endorses Gay Marriage. When will our political leaders?

ŠĒ• Wall Street Journal

Regular readers of this blog will know that I support gay marriage at the same time as mocking politicians who hide behind patronising total gay wastes of money like Gay Mardi Gras or driving gay utes.

President Barack Obama said Wednesday he supports gay marriage, reversing his position on a controversial social issue just six months before the November election and adopting a stance fraught with political implications.

Mr. Obama had been under intense pressure this week to lay out a clear stance on gay marriage after Vice President Joe Biden and several top advisers endorsed it. Mr. Obama said he “personally” believes gays and lesbians should have the right to marry, a position he said he came to after several years of talking to friends and family and thinking about gay members of the military and of his staff who are raising children in monogamous relationships.

“I’ve been going through an evolution on this issue. I’ve always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally,” Mr. Obama said in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts. “At a certain point, I just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think that same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

Political journalists should start asking all our MPs whether they support gay marriage. Its time we gave a basic civil right to all our citizens.

  • http://truebluenz.com/ Redbaiter

“Political journalists should start asking all our MPs whether they support gay marriage.”

    Why?

Its not something most people give a damn about. There are far more important political and social issues than this damn pissant distraction.

  • Andrei

Civil right my arse Р it is an issue the vapid elites care about Рmostly because it helps trash real marriage.

    • Alloytoo

“Real” marraige does a good job trashing itself.

  • AngryTory

Obama’s going down and gay marriage with him. Critical Swing state North Carolina just voted overwhelmingly to ban all recognition of gay relationships in their constitution. 30 Other states have done the same.

Even Hellen wasn’t stupid enough to push a policy many right-thinking Kiwis hate.

So perhaps Key doesnt need to throw Craig a seat. Key could endorse gay marriage – it would have the same effect!

  • Kosh103

I love when the ill educated homophobes come out to play.

Most good and moral people care about this CIVIL RIGHTS issue and only an idiot thinks Obama will lose to Mitt,

¬†I loved a comment on the 3News Facebook page this morning. “If you don’t support gay marriage – don’t have one.” Nicely put I thought – also I have no problem with (regardless of their sex) two consenting adults showing their long term committment to each other through a pagan ceremony . It’s not as if we heteros have such a great record in marriage that we can “preach” to them….

      • Groans

Of course we can preach to them we’re normal.

      • Kosh103

No groans, homophobia is not normal. Homosexuality is. Your getting confused.

    • Groans

You DON’T like it when we come out to play because you’re scared of us.¬† And you should be.

      • Kosh103

Worried for any kids you might have contact with more like it. We dont want your corrupt thinking to damage them.

Not necessarily. Romney isn’t that far behind in the polls. A lot will depend on the econmomy. Unfortunately for Romney, the Federal Reserve isn’t going to do him any favours :)

“Mitt Romney is now starting to aim most of his fire on President Obama, instead of attacking his Republican rivals. However, Romney’s strategies for winning the presidency are bumping up against a huge roadblock ‚Äď Obama’s top campaign manager ‚Äď the Federal Reserve. The highly secretive Fed is actively rigging the markets in order to help Mr. Obama get re-elected, and the fruits of the Fed’s labor is just beginning to sprout in the political arena. The Fed has engineered an improbable recovery rally in the stock market that has lifted the Dow Jones Industrials to its highest closing level since May 2008 ‚Äď back to the time before Lehman Brothers collapsed. The Nasdaq Composite Index, dominated by technology stocks, has rebounded to the 2905-level, its highest close in 11 years, led by Apple Inc…

Incumbent presidents are always hard to beat. The powers of the presidency go a long way. Not since 1971 and early in the 1972 election year, when Nixon pressured Arthur Burns, then the Fed chairman, to expand the money supply with the aim of reducing unemployment, and boosting the economy in order to insure Nixon’s re-election, have traders seen such massive political pressure on the Fed to intervene in the markets in order to help a president to get re-elected. Nixon imposed wage and price controls to constrain inflation, and won the election in a landslide.

Underneath the surface, the Fed was steadily increasing the high octane MZM Money supply, throughout the turbulent days of 2011. The size of the MZM Money supply has increased by $1 trillion from a year ago, to a record $10.75 trillion today. At the same time, Bernanke has gone far beyond the markets wildest imaginations, by pledging to keep borrowing costs for banks and hedge funds locked at zero% for the next three years. The Fed said that it aims to continue with its ultra-easy money policy until the US jobless rate falls towards 6% from 8.3% today, and is willing to tolerate a higher inflation rate, until it achieves its objective.

Only one US president since World War II ‚Äď Ronald Reagan ‚Äď has been re-elected with a jobless rate above 6%. Reagan won a second term in 1984 with an unemployment rate of 7.2% on Election Day. Reagan won in a landslide since the jobless rate had fallen almost 3% in the previous 18-months, and a sizeable majority of US-voters thought the economy was moving in the right direction. By contrast, under Mr. Obama the unemployment rate has dropped by 1.7% in the last 26 months ‚Äď from a high of 10% in 2009. The Fed aims to keep the ultra-easy conditions in place that would enable the jobless rate to tumble to 7% by Election Day, even at the expense of faster inflation, to help Obama win a second term.

      • Kosh103

Mitt wont win. And truth be told it will have more to do with his religion than anything else.

    • Andrei

Civil Rights what a load of utter bullshit!

There is no way you can make a baby with two men and no nong legislator can fix that by granting you a piece of paper that says otherwise.

The whole thing about marriage is it is about making babies and assigning the responsibility for their upbringing and welfare to those that made them.

It is not about kitsch wedding.

      Progressives are mentally deficient

      • Kosh103

So are you suggesting that infertile hetros should not have the same civil rights as fertile ones?

      • Alloytoo

So post fertile couples shouldn’t be allowed to marry either.

      • Polishpride

Nor should couples found to be infertile in fact on taht stupid thinking all couples should be forced to have fertility tests before being allowed to get married. – It’s like we have imported stupid people from Australia¬†

      • Skivich

What about the thousands of couples who choose not to have children? Should their marriage be annulled because their love has nothing to do with procreation?

      • Rodger T

WoW, in bold type , makes a change from all CAPS , like most of the fucking retards do.
Got the message across too, we don`t think you are a raving fucking nutjob, no way, no sirree.

    • nzd.gbp

Kosh you’d be better off appealing to their sense of fairness than harping on about rights as if they are a law of nature or God-given or even objective. You have no right to a gay marriage as it stands even if it is fair.
The whole point of this debate is to create the right for gays to marry.

      • Kosh103

The only reason you have a right to hetro marriage is because the state allows it.

      • nzd.gbp

        that’s better.

      • Kosh103

Therefore the state has the right to define marriage as they please.

      • nzd.gbp

That’s a shame. I was hopeful for a second because you used a nice juxtaposition highlighting the inherent unfairness of the status quo.¬†

Appealing to a contrived authority, getting the numbers, then bludgeoning your opponents into submission with all assurance is no different to the social conservatives.

What I’m suggesting you do is appeal to their sense of fairness. I know it’s demeaning to do anything other than dictate when you have the moral high ground and a litany of historical grievances but if you can convince the anti-homos that it’s none of their business and they have nothing to be afraid of then you’ll hose in.

I guess I have more faith in the good nature of most kiwis and that’s understandable because I don’t stand out and haven’t been targeted for exclusion. Apart from being over taxed that is. Suck it up and play nicely. You’ll get it in the end. (so to speak)

    • Guest

only an idiot thinks Obama will lose to Mitt,

Yeah right. Obama is gone.  Please cease displaying the effects of state school education at every opportunity.

      • Kosh103

I see you are not only an idiot but lazy too. Cant even take the type to type an ID.

  • LesleyNZ

He had to of course. I mean – this is no different to what Helen Clark did bribing student voters with interest free student loans. http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/same-sex-marriage-debate-many-of-obamas-top-fundraisers-are-gay/2012/05/09/gIQASJYSDU_story.html?hpid=z1

    • Kosh103

I love how good policy is seen as a bribe.

We even had Steven Joyce on the telly saying how intrest free student loans are a very good thing.

      • Groans

Truth is Kosh if your homosexual you’ve got something wrong with you.¬† This doesn’t make society homophobic it means you’ve got something wrong with you.¬† This doesn’t inspire hatred in most other people, it’s more likely to inspire compassion.¬† It would be nice if they found a cure.

      • LesleyNZ

Good policy?????? I don’t care who thinks interest free student loans are a very good thing. What Helen Clark did was an election¬†bribe – to win votes -¬†just before the election.

      • Polishpride

Kosh – Re: Groans comment sometimes it is just better not to try to argue with ignorance. I am sure 99.999% of people would be shaking their heads at at a comment that stupid.

      • Kosh103

Wrong Groans – if you are homophobic you have something wrong with you. If you are gay, you are fine.

It would be nice if they found a cure for people like yourself.

      • Bunswalla

Polish you’re wrong again. The vast majority of the world recognises that homosexuality is wrong. It’s not normal in any species and never will be. That’s not homophobic and I don’t care if people want to be gay, lesbian, transgender or fist possums up the chook. It doesn’t make it right.

      • Arabicamanknows

I love how you load it up. ‘Good policy’. You’re transparent and I’ve got your number.

      • Kosh103

Take your agrument to Steven Joyce Arabic – he is the most recent MP to say that intrest free student loans are good.

      • Kosh103

        Oh buns, poor incorrect buns.

  • middleagedwhiteguy

This could be an astute political move.  The losing republican candidates were the ones most closley aligned with the bible belt.  These people wont vote democrat.  Obama has effectively pushed Romney and this demographic together.  This may cost Romney some center votes.

    • Random66

I’m certain he wouldn’t have said a thing unless he was convinced this was a good voting move.¬† Every¬†orchestrated step¬†he takes¬†or speaks¬†will be with the end in sight from here on in.

      • Guest

¬†I’m certain he wouldn’t have said a thing unless he was convinced this was a good voting move

That’s because you’re ignorant. He was bounced into this when Biden misspoke. Current polls now give Romney 3 points clear nationwide, and up by 10 in the electoral college.¬†

      • Random66

So Guest that would show Obama was perhaps ignorant in thinking his stand on this issue would fly with the voters.  I stand by my original view that everything he says and does will be calculated in the hope to win come election time.

      • Polishpride

Pity Romney might not even be the candidate :)

  • STEVE AND MONIQUE

Good on him(Obama).Should get those good ole boys down south really jumping now,Black, and a homo supporter,Ma fetch me gun.

    • Kosh103

Good lord can you imagine the reacction on FOX News. They must think all their Christmases have come at once.

      • Kosh103

Hehe, watching FOX Comedy News now – my they are in a tizz.

  • Zacborrows

Opposing gay marriage becuase it offends you is like telling someone they can’t have a donut because you’re on a diet.¬† Gay marriage has no effect on anyone’s lives but the people who are getting married and their families.¬† Why can’t people mind their own business??

    • Bunswalla

To use your own facile argument against you: why can’t gays fuck off and mind their own business? Why do they have to ram their point of view down our throats, when we (literally) don’t give a fuck? I’m sick of all the whining and pouting and flouncing and the flicking of hair and exasperated sighs.

      • Kosh103

So because we are gay we have to be quiet and listen to idots balther on and attack us because they are straight?

        Yeaaaaa, aint gong to happen.

  • Jackhenderson00

There’s a difference between achieving equality and emulative behaviour.

So Obama has caught up with Cheney. Ho-hum.

    • AngryTory

Nope. Cheney was in office for 8 years.  Obama will only manage 4.

      • Kosh103

Boy are you going to be one upset nutter in November.

  • Kosh103

Its intresting when you call one of these red neck homophobic idiots on thier stupid comments – most of them never fire back and just run away.

    • http://truebluenz.com/ Redbaiter

Ha ha.. thanks for the laff.

Who the fuck would be bothered seriously responding to the cendless adolescent crap you post here?

      • Kosh103

Oh RB, you brain dead homophobic dickwack. Its so cute that you think you have the ability to form a full opinion on anything.

  • Pukakidon

The thought of having sex with another man makes my skin crawl, however I am sure that is the same for Kosh if he thought about plugging a female.

Most gay men and women are dam nice people. Marriage is a personal thing that does not concern anyone other than the two involved.  The union between two people was around long before religion.    It is none of our business. Only recently people found mixed race marriages abhorrent, actually the racists of today like Hone the white hater clearly makes his views known.  Showing intolerance to gay people is no different.

What I do find funny though is how you back this guy Kosh and you want him part of you coalition of the nasty.  He is an intolerant racist and I think you might be selective in your morality

Gay marriage hurts no one.    Make marriage available to everyone and leave the intolerance to Labour and its coalition.

    • Kosh103

It always amuse me when people ignore things I have said in the past and say the opposite of what my view is.

I dont support Hone, I do view him as a racist and a hater and he deserves to be left out in the wild. I will argue strongly against him being included in ANY Labour lead Govt after 2014.

I hope this reminds everyone of my position on Hone – again.

  • Landy

I don’t mind it, I say reluctantly, if they
(a)¬†¬† Withdraw the marriage licence if they still go round grooming youngsters for sex, being as (they have long proven) inclined to keep seeking fresh and young partners …
    and
(b)¬† If they make homosexual marriages legal, simultaneously dis-allow the diplomatic service and all government such jobs getting salary compensation for their wives if they had to resign and to move for a hubby’s posting. ¬† Can’t see how this is justified. ¬† Nobody I can think of in private enterprise gets it
    and
(c)¬† If they stop being malicious and vitriolic (often concealing it) towards women, whom they hate because it’s with women they compete for the attentions of handsome young men,
    and
    (d)  They start doing something useful in society for a change, instead of putting their sexual inclinations at the top of every agenda, showing they care about the good of the communities they live in,
    and…
    and…
    and…

    • Kosh103

      Sexual inclinations??? Ohhh good lord.

  • Guy

what the hell has gay marriage got to do with any of the relevant issues that need attention, such as THE ECONOMY, NATIONAL SECURITY, ENERGY INDEPENDENCE, EDUCATION, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ETC… ?
