They do that already for political refugee’s. A teacher I know in a low decile school has refugee’s at the school and once their refugee status was confirmed, they were given grants of $10K cash, plus housing allowance, a house, modest vehicle and assistance with everyday basic necessaties.
As a white, unmarried, straight tax payer for over 30 years, I also feel like a political refugee – still recoverving from 9 years of political persecution under a Labour government – do I qualify for such largesse?

My biggest fear is that I’ll accidentally offend Islam. If I were going to an Islamic country, you’re dead right I’d be reading up on how to act appropriately. I don’t expect to be accosted walking through the Sydney CBD though. I respect their right to religious freedom and to have people respect that in their homes but in a country like Australia – historically and predominately Western and Christian – I will not kow tow to a religious group that is taking advantage of a freedom that they are not allowed in the countries they have fled. To be given the respect of others, you must give respect to others.
