RIP Mum

Photo taken on Mum’s last visit to Wellington earlier this year

I have been dreading writing this post for months now. I have put it off and put it off. Mum would have wagged her finger at me and said what you put off today you just have to do tomorrow…and so it has come to pass.

At 0720 this morning my beautiful mother passed away holding Dad’s hand.

She found out a year ago that she had cancer and she set about planning what remained of her life. In February she was told she had at best 12 weeks left to live and in her usual way she just said she would see about that. As is usual she was right about that.

My Mum was a mentor to me, a calming influence, a peacemaker and taught me more about politics and people than anyone else.

I well remember her ticking off many MPs, including Prime Ministers in her forthright Presbyterian manner. She didn’t care for their positions or their titles, she just spoke her mind on things that mattered.

My Mum cared for everyone else and was the most unselfish, giving person you could ever know. Even in her last days she was thinking and caring about other people.

She handled her illness like she handled her entire life, with dignity, grace and a steely strength.

I am going to miss my Mum, I loved her very much.

      More
      funny first name syndrome cases
by Whaleoil on February 14, 2009
This week has seen a couple of cases that might never have happened if
people had had sensible first names instead of the bizarre ones their “parents”
      gave them.
      Pihema Cameron, probably would
never have ended up on the end of Bruce Emery’s knife had his name been Steve, He was also doubly doomed because his sister was
      named Aquitania.
Pihema sister was only 15 years old when you made your sick coward joke bragging
on the domain You are a dirty low life scum bag Cameron Slater
may you rot in hell you coward.
“Bruce Emery pulled my heart out and ripped it to
      pieces,” Aquitania Cameron, 15, said.

    Very sad to hear.

    Such sad news Cam.

I wish all the best to you & your family in these tough times. I dread the day I have to share a similar burden. I imagine your mother would have been very proud of you & what you have achieved.

    Take care.

  • Pix

I am so sorry for your loss, Cameron. May your Mum rest in peace. Also, that tribute brought tears to my eyes. Your Mum would be proud.

  • Backfromoutback

    Our sincere condolences Cam.
    Mothers have
strengths that amaze men. They carry children, they carry hardships, and they
carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy. They smile when they want
to scream. They sing when they want to cry. They cry when they are happy and
laugh when they are nervous. They fight for what they believe in. They stand up
for injustice. They don’t take “no” for an answer when they believe
there is a better solution. They go without new shoes so their children can
have them. They go to the doctor with a frightened friend. They love
unconditionally. They cry when their children excel and cheer when their loved
ones get awards. They are happy when they hear about a birth or a new marriage.
They are strong when they think there is no strength left. They know that a hug
and a kiss can heal a broken heart. Mothers come in all sizes, in all colors
and shapes. They’ll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they
care about you. The heart of a mother is what makes the world spin! Mothers do
more than just give birth. They bring joy and hope. They give compassion and
ideals. They give moral support to their family and friends. Mothers have a lot
to say and a lot to give. RIP Mrs WO..god be with you.

May she rest in peace. And may you and your family be given the strength to continue without her. My deepest condolences.

    Cameron,

Your mother was a great woman. My wife and I go to to St David’s church, so we used to chat with Margaret and your dad from time to time. She did tremendous work in Session and the Op Shop. Most of all, she was a lot of fun and full of life.

Thanks for posting this message, it would have been really tough to do, but I appreciate it. We will definitely be at the funeral.

    Regards,

    Rob

I lost my mother in a similar manner recently. Diagnosed with cancer and given a short term but she hung on for another 2 years and saw the weddings of two of her three sons. She, like your own as you describe, was a deeply caring and wonderful woman who taught me much about the world and instilled a deep caring for others in me. I know how you feel and I am sorry to hear of your loss.

A truly moving tribute. It appears I am about to go through the same thing. My apologies to you WO for replying to this piece of shit on this sad day for you & yours, but he cannot go unchallenged.

    • conwaycaptain

I never thought that I would see someone stoop so low with comments like this to someone who is grieving their nearest and dearest. You are a carbunkle and shancre on the posterior of humanity

    • Teletubby

That’s the problem with children nowadays, no respect for anything. Read the thread fuckwit, there are plenty of commenters who don’t normally see eye to eye with WO but have still made an effort to show respect to Mrs Slater and her family’s grief. You sir are a miserable human being and you have bought yourself some very bad karma this day, however I really hope no one turns the screws on you like that mere hours after someone who treasure passes away, I’m just not as foul and vindictive as you.

    • busman

I suggest you think about what you have written and offer an apology , we all make mistakes as i am sure you are feeling now.

    • Joe Bloggs

You’re a miserable fucking cunt Peter Burns – a nasty misanthropic fucking poxy cunt of an arsehole, with some really significant mental issues.

You’ve done the whole issue of equal treatment for kiwi dads under NZ law a huge dis-service – You’re no victim of misjustice, only of your own bad decisions, which you display every day.

    • Cadwallader

This is so unfair. How could Dad 4 Justice be so unfeeling and callous? The answer must be that he’s an utter prick! Ignore him Cam.

    • http://www.facebook.com/rexwiderstrom Rex Widerstrom

That’s just unbelieveable Peter. I think I can honestly say I’ve supported you at least as much as anyone over at KB, but that’s just left me gobsmacked. You need to take a good look at yourself, then hope Cam has the magniminity to meet you somewhere to accept a personal, face-to-face apology. Anything less just calls into question your basic humanity, frankly.

      • http://www.facebook.com/luc.hansen.9 Luc Hansen

Peter, my advice to you is that it is never too late to apologise. And you definitely owe a big one.

    • Travis Poulson

You’ve always been a cunt. and a jibbering illiterate one at that Peter Burns. I can’t help but think you got your own mother to type that comment for you, because any of your own comments are barely understandable. We’ve missed you since you flipped your lid like a nutcase last time, but i honestly think people with schizophrenia should not be unsupervised in public.

If there was any proof outlining why cousins shouldn’t copulate, you’re it.

    • LesleyNZ

How could you say this? You are so nasty and horrible.

    • nzd.gbp

You see how violence and abuse is justified Peter Burns? Your incessant focus on your own suffering has given you a right to casually abuse a man at possibly one of the saddest times in his life. I sincerely hope that you apologise before you indeed do get your justice.

Let me also say this, I would put money on Whale forgiving you before you would forgive him under the same circumstances. You need help to salvage what’s left of your sad little self. Start by manning up.

      • nzd.gbp

UPDATE: I see on kiwiblog that the real Peter Burns has said it wasn’t him. DF has investigated and it seems to support his assertion.

In that case I need to unreservedly apologise to the real Peter Burns. My comment to Peter was unacceptable and I’m sorry. I do support Dad’s rights to pursue justice in the family court and I do accept that some Dad’s have been wrongfully discriminated against.

To the person who posted that comment as Peter Burns. You should be lined up against a wall. We’d be better off without you.

    • http://htt:://www.pukeko.net.nz/blog chrisgale

Yeah… have you not any heart? Look, condolences need to be given to Whale and the family… not points scoring right now.

And yes, I would say the same thing about anybody in the left if they lost their mum or dad or spouse or whatever. This is NZ, man. Show some heart and be a little human.

    • rightoverlabour

Hi Cam, I knew your mum for sixty two years. We started Primary School together. Margaret was wise, selfless and fun to be with. Condolences to you and your family Cam. Your mother’s story sounds remarkably similar to that of my own mother ( except my mum’s telling offs weren’t at such a high level). I just wish I could have been as eloquent as you in my tribute. I even took solace in the same song.

  • conwaycaptain

Amazing think Mum WO was given 12 weeks to like and lasted until September, my wife was given 6 weeks and lasted another 7months. My doctor told me that it is the will power of the brain that keeps them going. Whereas he has heard of people being given a diagnosis of cancer and had obviously a few years to live but they just gave up and a few weeks later passed away.

Cam – late to this post. I lost my mum to cancer 20 years ago when she was only 60. Your post brought back bitter sweet memories. Thanks for sharing such an intensely private moment with us all. May God bless you and your family at this sad time.

Whale, I have been through an exact same thing and my heart goes out to you. Unfortunately it’s life, and you have to think about how lucky you have been to have had such a wonderful mother. Kia kaha.

Thanks so much for sharing this Cameron. Yes you will miss her but she lives on through you and your children. Lovely that your mum passed away holding your dad’s hand. Treasured memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.

As I can recall the whale oil coward scum gave the mother of
the 15 year old Cameron crap just after after he was knifed to death by Emery.

    More
    funny first name syndrome cases

by Whaleoil on February 14, 2009

Very sorry to hear about this and the comment form Peter Burns is disgusting! I lost my mother to cancer when I was 22 and I understand how devastating this is; you have my sincere condolences. There can be no possible justification for adding insult to injury no matter how much you dislike someone and it just shows up what a loser he is!

Sorry to hear of your loss Cam. Have been out of the loop a few days with travel and meetings. I dread the day that I lose someone close, I know it is coming and comes to everyone, but it will never be easy
