Perhaps it’s because we want a PM who keeps our spirits and morale up during hard times. John Key’s optimism, good humour and friendliness are a brilliant counter to the doom and gloom surrounding us.
Helen Clark made us feel worse about oursleves, as do most of Labour. Key makes us feel better.

What would be even more interesting would be to plot their respective preferred PM polling as a proportion of their respective parties’ party vote polling. That would be damning for Shearer. A large portion of people who still cling to voting Labour don’t even particularly want him as PM.
