A Typical Unemployed Battler

What is it about the Herald’s Simon Collins and his efforts to tell the heart-rending “human” stories behind the Herald’s job crisis, starving beneficiaries, children in poverty etc etc etc?

Today, he finds us a battling Mum who tells a tale of redundancy woe, factory workers laid off, a futile hunt for a job and now the bleak prospect of maybe having to go to Australia to get work.

After ploughing through paragraphs of this sad tale of an ordinary worker beset by troubles, we hit the last couple of paragraphs.

And lo and behold, the working Mum Simon discovered by diligent research is……a Member of the Labour Party Waitakere Electorate Committee, and a member of the Executive Committee of the EPMU.

She counts herself lucky to have lots of contacts. She is on the Labour Party’s Waitakere electorate committee and is on the national executive of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union.

Spare me.

Since she is on the national executive of the EPMU perhaps she might like to explain their massive losses over recent years?

To be fair having “member of the national executive of the EPMU” on your resume would be of equal value in finding work as a full facial tattoo!

    • Owl

Yes it is well known that once you have that on your CV you have a hurdle to jump at interviews. However I see that the EMPU has lots of great relationships with companies on their website. Wouldn’t it be good if Andrew Little stepped up to the mark and found her a job. I seriously suggest he should do that because he is a list MP he can work his magic in any electorate in NZ.

Mr Little one of your best and brightest EMPU executive is looking for a job..can you help? She will need a reference from you too.

However as the union delegate who would of been worth her salt would of have had countless meetings with her employer to disguise things like productivity and profitability to ensure all employees were contributing to the success of the company. Once again it is the company fault.

      • Dave

A reference from the union, 99.99999999999999% of employers would simply consider her application as fine fodder for the round file under the desk. My question though, in all seriousness is if this poor women is so good, why aren’t the union jumping at the chance to employ her? And, why am I asking this when one of the Heralds Simon Collins

        • Patrick

Probably because mcCarten would never pay her – he has a habit of not honouring his obligations

    • Mostly_Harmless

That’s outrageous discrimination. Companies should be forced to employ people who are committed to destroying them from the inside.

I find it strange how left a leaning journalist can write an article like this. Surely he must realise the truth about his subject is relatively easy to find? – well done W.O. This just leaves the question, is he supremely arrogant or thick as two short planks?

  • busman

and yet another own goal !

  • JeffDaRef

Way to give yourself mucho credibility Collins….

  • Petal

Credit where it is due: At least it was disclosed IN the article.

But yeah. An Advertorial at best, eh?

    • Patrick

I bet it was only dislosed as an attempt to prevent the likes of bloggers uncovering the information & using it to discredit the story.

  • Tony

Not sure what the issue is – she certainly seems to eat well

  • In Vino Veritas

This is the sort of reporting that has Simon Collins being labled as having no credibility. Perhaps he should have asked if the woman was going to resign from the National Executive of the EPMU for their role in the Pike River accident.

To give her come credit – single working mum who owns her own house…..at least she isnt on the DPB with more mouths to feed.

Sounds like she is a go getter…what a shame she is a unionist. Perhaps if she removed that ‘attribute’ from her CV she would be able to find employment :)

    • whaleraper

I am soo sure you are a watermelon or red under the bed sniping this forum bearch.

      • http://unsolicitedious.wordpress.com/ Unsolicitedious

Oh look, my very own pet cyber dog..following my comment around making halfwit comments….

    • Patrick

It is still welfare – gummint pays the unions to deliver “worksafe courses” & union pays her, would be cheaper to just give the money directly to her.

  • Jax

Best part of this was the first part – “she believes her only option will be Australia” Hooray! , we will of course be happy to not pay the benefit you wont get over there, pity its an empty threat as despite all that expert research (looking at seek) you will find if they dont want you here, they definitely wont want you there.

  • gavinc

Maybe if she didn’t have her first child at 15! she would have a few more qualifications

  • Petone Alice

Cameron loves his stereotypes doesn’t he?

    • Travis Poulson

Not as much as you love your stupid comments. I see you’re new to this game, at least you’re commenting on a current post this time, instead or trawling through the archives and commenting on posts that are dead and buried.

      • Lion_ess

And here was I thinking Meg had a new moniker

        • Travis Poulson

Heh, saw you engaging on the dead and buried posts, I ignore anything other than the current day.

          • Lion_ess

            Na, kind of got side-jacked.

          • http://unsolicitedious.wordpress.com/ Unsolicitedious

Which means you are very good at choosing being happy over being right…..I struggle to ignore the notifications…its like the blogging version of FB (which I boycotted a long time ago!)

          • Travis Poulson

My comment was in regards to Petone Alice, who trawls back through the achives to make comments, as opposed to a person responding to a response already made to them, it’s nothing to do with being right or happy ;)

      • Petone Alice

Dead and buried? You have a short attention span or something?

  • thor42

    Awwww, these **pooooor** bennies……

Maybe “Mummy Shearer” should drop in, tuck them in at night and read them all a bedtime story.
    What a bunch of **moaners.**
