Hobbit Hypocrisy Watch, Ctd

As mentioned earlier Grant Robertson is one of our first 3 Hobbit hating hypocrites.

He has accepted a free ticket to tomorrow’s red carpet premiere in Wellington.

Yet, when the Government was passing legislation to save the Hobbit, he said it was….

“… acquiescing to the demands of a corporation in America in the form of Warner Bros, and about saying we will change our law and do whatever it takes, no matter what it is, to do what that corporation wants.”

“The Government has made it clear that our sovereignty and democracy are there for the highest bidder.”

Mr Robertson is quite clear that the law would not have been changed under a Labour Government.

If he had his way, the Hobbit would not have been made here.  Peter Jackson reiterates that point.

For Robertson and his Hobbit hating mates to turn up to the premiere is breathtaking hypocrisy.

Did Trevor get a free ticket? Quick somebody check Trademe.

  • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

Why would he pass on some nice food & wine? Also keep in mind he will be the Minister of something in 2014….so suck it in WO.

    • http://twitter.com/hifuncblonde hifuncblonde

Would that be the Minister of Wine & Cheese, perhaps?

      • http://twitter.com/Inventory2 Inventory2

Trev will be the Minister of Being Told to Pull His Head In, as he was at Question Time today.

        • Mr_V4

And no doubt he’ll interpret that as putting his head in and proceed to attempt to root all aging journalists within a 20k radius of parliament.

    • stanman

      Minister of poofters

  • John Q Public

I take it Robyn Malcolm also sent her ticket back?

    • Gazzaw

      ……….& is Ms Kelly going?

  • Changeiscoming

Back in my younger days I watched pro wrestling and one guy went by the name Triple H.
Whale has found a new meaning for the name – Now the Labour triple H

The irrationality that surrounds the Hobbit puzzles me. It is just some dungeons and dragons story manufactured with a large supply of taxpayers dollars.

Not treating the appeals of Sir Peter for more money as self-interested special pleading also puzzles me.

Throwing more tax money at the local film industry is the economic equivalent of trying to undercut Bangladesh in the manufacture of white cotton T shirts.

    • onelaw4all

Dungeons and Dragons is based on the Tolkien milieu and not the other way around.
What tax money was thrown towards the making of The Hobbit?

      • Anonymouse Coward

        Large Screen Production Grants.

        Apply at the Film Commission

        • onelaw4all

“The Large Budget Screen Production Grant is a financial incentive to encourage studios to produce large-budget films
and television shows in New Zealand.

The grant provides a rebate on production expenditure – over a certain value
          – within New Zealand.”
          I ask again.
What tax money was thrown towards the making of The Hobbit

          • Alex

I think the government forgoing tax revenue that would otherwise have been payable does amount to an investment. You will find the government publications justified this grant on the basis that it would “incentivise” film production in this country, Not sure quite what’s driving your posts — recognition of these tax concessions for what they are doesn’t mean you side with Helen Kelly.

          • onelaw4all

So allowing people to keep more of what they earn is “funding”?
Is shooting someone in the head twice instead of three times providing free healthcare?

      • Anonymouse Coward

        Here is a dungeons and dragons tale involving a quest by a Hobbit named Peeyem you might enjoy;

I think you can be a bit too doctrinaire with this line. I’m opposed to corporate welfare as a rule, but I would think that NZ’s investment in the films is one of the smarter things done by government for a very long time. By all means government shouldn’t pick winners, but if there is a clear winner I don’t oppose the government (within reason) seeking to cash in.

      • onelaw4all

They didn’t invest one taxpayer cent in the production of the film.

      • Doug

Labour and Jim Anderton used to pick winners, trouble is most have gone under.

    • Orange

You have obviously not watched the production logs from Lord of the Rings. They celebrate humanity and especially kiwis working together beyond, for most of them, what they actually get paid for. Hugely rewarding, even more than the movies.

    • Michael

I was on holiday in the US last month, as soon as everyone found out I was from New Zealand – Lord of the Rings/Hobbit. It has raised the profile of NZ as a destination enormously and made NZ a place they want to visit.

Also recall the extra casting call last year in Lower Hutt? 1000 expected to attend, 3000 turned up and caused traffic mayhem on the motorway. The workers of NZ spoke quite clearly that they would happily accept the working conditions the Government legislated for.

  • SJ00

I hope you are running a front page story on this in the Truth, Cam. Just pathetic.

    • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz Whaleoil

No i have a much better one…involving gambling, god and hypocrites

      • http://twitter.com/Inventory2 Inventory2

Involving a New Zealand First MP perchance?

  • Zephyr Cobalt

OMG I thought Grant Robertson is a hobbit.

  • Mr_V4

Maybe Robertson will enter by the back door to avoid the red carpet?

    • Gazzaw

An unfortunate choice of words Mr V.

    • Patrick

Didn’t realise Julia Gillard was invited
