A bloody good idea

The Dutch occasionally come up with some smart ideas. This one, the creation of “Scum Villages” is a ripper. Perhaps Paula Bennett could look at a similar proposal here. Labour might be embracing it already because if you are housing scum then you can easily build shitty little affordable houses well under the $300,000 mark.

Amsterdam is to create “Scum villages” where nuisance neighbours and anti-social tenants will be exiled from the city and rehoused in caravans or containers with “minimal services” under constant police supervision.

Holland’s capital already has a special hit squad of municipal officials to identify the worst offenders for a compulsory six month course in how to behave.

Social housing problem families or tenants who do not show an improvement or refuse to go to the special units face eviction and homelessness.

Eberhard van der Laan, Amsterdam’s Labour mayor, has tabled the £810,000 plan to tackle 13,000 complaints of anti-social behaviour every year. He complained that long-term harassment often leads to law abiding tenants, rather than their nuisance neighbours, being driven out.

“This is the world turned upside down,” the mayor said at the weekend.

The project also involves setting up a special hotline and system for victims to report their problems to the authorities.

The new punishment housing camps have been dubbed “scum villages” because the plan echoes a proposal from Geert Wilders, the leader of a populist Dutch Right-wing party, for special units to deal with persistent troublemakers.

“Repeat offenders should be forcibly removed from their neighbourhood and sent to a village for scum,” he suggested last year. “Put all the trash together.”

Whilst denying that the new projects would be punishment camps for “scum”, a spokesman for the city mayor stressed that the special residential units would aim to enforce good behaviour.

“The aim is not to reward people who behave badly with a new five-room home with a south-facing garden. This is supposed to be a deterrent,” he said.

Though watch the suprise in 10 years time as the “villiage”, densely populated with muslim immigrants of African descent, becomes a Dutch Clichy-sous-Bois

Not if they stop letting them in.

Like thats going to happen, just build walls around it and shut the gate, shut off supplies and water and force them to become peaceful if they want to live.

      • JimboBug

Or build a wall, shut the doors, turn off waste water but not water in and let everyone slowly drown in their own faeces …

        • Catweasel321

And so goes the inevitable mutually inspired decent into RW authoritarian lust for the ultimate solution to every social problem, that depressingly always culminates (or should that be climaxes) with internment in one sort of camp or another.

Ah Westerbork…those were the days mijn vriend.

I think you mean “descent”, and I think left wing dictators are just as keen on locking people up in labour camps.

          • Catweasel321

Thanks for the spell check Richard; duly corrected.

Yes, dictators are usually the same regardless of professed
            creed.

As the good book says, “By their fruits ye shall know
            them.”

However, considerations of false equivalence aside, I wasn’t
talking about dictators, state or party but instead deleterious rants welling
up from the Id that seem to afflict those on the right.

Though your observation regarding the character of dictators
may be a valid counter point to another’s comment, it’s just not relevant to mine.

I’ve 3 nuisance neighbours. One plays a stereo quite often — We often have this thump-thump-thump noise which goes through the entire house .I don’t actually really hear the music, just the bass thump-thump-thump.

The other burns his rubbish and sometimes it is difficult to breathe inside the house due to smoke — we just had to rewash all our drying clothes due to smoke.

And, the other nuisance is learning the drums.

A bit fed up. Wish they’d all move. Councils want intensification and my full site is surrounded by 1/2 & 1/4 sites. But, the councils don’t want to deal with the added nuisance factor of close neighbours.

I’m sure we have an off-shore island or two we can use that way.

  • blokeintakapuna

It was tried ages ago when moving the trouble makers on the North Shore to “South Auckland”… now look at it…

  • In Vino Veritas

Can you just imagine the outrage from the left here in NZ if anything like this was put on the table?

  • cows4me

Wouldn’t it be easier to put a fence around Auckland?. Why shift the scum.

    • Catweasel321

IS the fence to keep them in our you out?

  • Catweasel321

“Repeat offenders should be forcibly removed from their neighbourhood and sent to a village for scum,”

What if they go voluntarily or put up no resistance?

‘Oh no, that simply wouldn’t do! There has to be force, otherwise it just wouldn’t feel right.’

‘I think you’ll find if we use the necessary degree of force to provoke resistance then we’ll have sufficient cause for its use.’

I am very pleased to see this initiative, and somewhat surprised to see it originates from the Netherlands and from a Labour mayor no less
