When you have nowhere else to go the truth is always an option

If only politicians were this honest…or as Andrew Sullivan suggests..the Pope.

This is the start of the resignation letter of Groupon’s CEO, Andrew Mason, to staff:

“People of Groupon,

“After four and a half intense and wonderful years as CEO of Groupon, I’ve decided that I’d like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding – I was fired today. If you’re wondering why . . . you haven’t been paying attention. From controversial metrics in our S1 to our material weakness to two quarters of missing our own expectations and a stock price that’s hovering around one quarter of our listing price, the events of the last year and a half speak for themselves. As CEO, I am accountable.

Nice…honest…unusual.

The real story mason was played, his co owner Lefbrowski a serial bad boy had a history of running companies with hyper growth going public only hot them to fold. Lebrowskis secret was to always have someone else front them and take the lions share if the blame Mason only controlled 20% of the stock and voting rights, lebrowski had 28% plus voting rights on a colleagues 10% It total lebrowski got several hundred million out of Groupon whereas Mason managed a paltry few mill in comparison. NB this is from memory actual figures might be slightly different. Am not a Highly trained and skilled journo :)

Meh, all I know is that both me and my wife had terrible dealing with Groupon, from a customer’s point of view, so we stopped using them, and I imagine that’s the same as many other people.
