Another study, another culprit other than Carbon Dioxide

Pretty soon there are going to be a lot of red faces as more and more evidence mounts that Carbon Dioxide is not the evil gas Al Gore and his inconvenient scientists have made it out to be.

20130528 - CFCs Climate Change1

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are to blame for global warming since the 1970s and not carbon dioxide, according to new research from the University of Waterloo published in the International Journal of Modern Physics B this week.

CFCs are already known to deplete ozone, but in-depth statistical analysis now shows that CFCs are also the key driver in global climate change, rather than carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

“Conventional thinking says that the emission of human-made non-CFC gases such as carbon dioxide has mainly contributed to global warming. But we have observed data going back to the Industrial Revolution that convincingly shows that conventional understanding is wrong,” said Qing-Bin Lu, a professor of physics and astronomy, biology and chemistry in Waterloo’s Faculty of Science. “In fact, the data shows that CFCs conspiring with cosmic rays caused both the polar ozone hole and global warming.”

“Most conventional theories expect that global temperatures will continue to increase as CO2 levels continue to rise, as they have done since 1850. What’s striking is that since 2002, global temperatures have actually declined – matching a decline in CFCs in the atmosphere,” Professor Lu said. “My calculations of CFC greenhouse effect show that there was global warming by about 0.6 °C from 1950 to 2002, but the earth has actually cooled  since 2002. The cooling trend is set to continue for the next 50-70 years as the amount of CFCs in the atmosphere continues to decline.”

    Whoops!
Looks like the UN will soon need to think of another way to tax and control

    • http://www.facebook.com/euan.rosstaylor Euan Ross-Taylor

I am quite happy that the carbon tax be withdrawn and a tax on CFCs brought in to replace it. That would be quite acceptable and appropriate: wait, what’s that you say, “CfC’s are used very little these days and so there would be little revenue gathered”, So what, Carbon tax was always a stupid idea.

Carbon dioxide is Soylent Green, but for plants.

    • BJ

And I’ve never seen CFC cycle for plants animals or humans

Thank you for posting this Cam. Your blog is widely read and getting this info out there is important. Its another nail in the coffin for the Greens as we fight the climate wars. As CO2 continues to be disproved as being a cause for any temp rise of significance it completely destroys the Greens meme that fossil fuels is the main contributor and hence mining for coal and drilling for oil is bad. This pretty much then makes all they say irrelevant and wrong. Which is why they are fighting so hard to suppress info like this
.Its pretty clear now that CO2 is not the driver once thought as observation of actual temps vs rises in CO2 shows no correlation.
Of note is that the warmists have yet to be able to undermine this new Paper. I do think we need to be careful about falling into the trap of correlation is causation with it but it shows the area needs more research as the explanation is plausible.
The other interesting and concerning thing occurring is the trend in Solar cycle 24 and the prediction for Solar cycle 25. The temp is going to drop- maybe.
I reckon the Denniston coalmine is going to have a great future. Mmm, cosy coal.

What I want to know is, ‘when it is proved that added CO2 is beneficial to the planet, will govts pay compensation back to the people whom they stole tax from? I expect there is going to be a whole new grievance industry.

    • All_on_Red

Euan, its already been proved that CO2 is good for the Planet. Satellite analysis shows extra “greening” growth of some 11% in the last 10 years. Especially in more arid areas. Its also been well observed (Study of tree pines) that existing plants have increased and accelerated growth.Plants love CO2.

      • http://www.facebook.com/euan.rosstaylor Euan Ross-Taylor

That is exactly what I am saying.

        • All_on_Red

Sure. I think what we all agree is really needed is “when will the msm forgoe their allegiance to the Greens and disseminate this info to Jo Public?”
They fucking wont because they also know it then destroys the “Capitalism bad” theme. Biased cunts.Still judging by the Polls showing the decline of the Greens in Oz, Germany and in the Uk, the public is waking up to it. Hope that increases here.

This information if it was widely disseminated and, supported by the Government would destroy the Green party overnight. Sadly National doesnt have the balls to do that.

    • andrew carrot

Yes, I’m surprised too, as the National government in the early 90s did not reverse the Ozone Layer Protection Act 1989, which in many respects turned NZ’s refrigeration and air-conditioning industries upside down. It may have had something to do with our Kyoto obligations, but that’s a side issue. It’s uncanny that as soon as NZ started to phase-out ozone depleting substances, the holes in the ozone layer shrank and average global temperatures began to decline. Applying scientific method, I think I can argue that NZ saved the world from global warming and only National, and Labour, can accept the qudos.

  • Never in the dark…..

When are all our little ETS taxes going to be scrapped and refunded, since it was a crock from the beginning?

  • Dr Wang

No wonder Russell Norman was so grumpy at the Greens conference during the weekend – the rug is getting pulled from under his feet.

    • All_on_Red

Ha, the ice, like Russell is being proved to be thicker every day!

        Yep my bad!

        • sheppy

Just looked through that paper, the bit at the end is the most telling:
“…..Taxing carbon makes absolutely no sense and will dramatically hurt the economy of every country that implements it – all for no useful reason! This paper is a direct challenge to the IPCC; its models are way off base. When one develops a model, actual data needs to be observed to confirm or refute the model that one develops. It does not look like the IPCC knows this.”

          • Hazards001

But of course when the lefties signed us up to Kyoto they knew that it would hurt the economy. Even Clark and Cullen aren’t that dense. They just didn’t care as it made them look palatable for the queen bitches run at the UN.

          • sheppy

That sounds about right – how come the UN has so much influence on NZ, is it just a home for lefties once we realise how much economic carnage electing them has done or is there more to it than that?

          • Hazards001

The UN’s range of influence isn’t restricted to NZ. The left wing global organization of wankers wannabes and commies has been dipping it’s fucking oar in the worlds business since the end of WWII and has fucking nothing to show for it apart from a multi billion dollar deficit. Of course Helen is going to want to be a part of it!

  • Hazards001

Fuck..it’s been getting colder since we got rid of CFC’s? Shove that…where’s the old fridge and my can of flyspray?
