As you know, I have no patience for anyone that kills or abuses children. Matthew Ellery is one of the worst of his kind. Belinda Feek reports
A Hamilton man who admitted murdering six-month-old Serenity Joy Scott by holding her by her feet and throwing her to the ground head first will serve a minimum term of 13 and-a-half years in prison.
Matthew Ellery, 23, initially denied he had anything to do with the Ngaruawahia baby’s death but was forced to plead guilty after confessing his crime to an undercover officer.
Serenity was found unresponsive with critical injuries at the Havelock Rd house where she lived with her mother Chelsea Scott, Scott’s partner Ellery and Scott’s brother, Drew, in April 2011.
In the High Court at Hamilton today, Miss Scott told Ellery how he had ruined her life and labelled him a “monster”.
And what does a monster do?
The court heard how Ellery held the child up by her legs before dropping her headfirst onto the floor, with her head coming into contact with a wooden toy.
She continued to cry, so he then grabbed a cloth nappy and smothered her until he believed she stopped breathing.
Miss Scott was in the lounge with her brother, Drew Scott and other members playing cards and watching television.
It was about 3pm when Ellery threw Serenity to the floor, but instead of telling anyone about Serenity’s condition, Ellery went to a dairy before coming back and smoking a cigarette.
It was an hour after that that he finally went back into the bedroom and saw Serenity’s eyes rolling back in her head.
My stomach turns.
Here’s the kicker
Ellery used cannabis on a daily basis and was a binge drinker. He also had past problems with anger, alcohol and drugs
As our Whaleoil series on QTopia and Craig Morris has demonstrated – excessive drug use isn’t the right mix for people that find themselves in trusted positions around children, especially if it is a SOCK.
