Expedition stuck in ice is led by global warming expert

Chris Turney experiencing global warming in summer

This is too funny. The ship that is currently stuck in sea ice is on an expedition led by Chris Turney, a global warming expert.

Three icebreakers are en route to Antarctica to help free a vessel carrying 74 people, including four Kiwis, which is stranded in thick sheets of ice.

The MV Akademik Shokalskiy has been unable to move since Christmas Eve after it was surrounded by thick ice, near Commonwealth Bay.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority was alerted to a distress signal sent via satellite from the vessel on Wednesday.

Australian scientist Chris Turney, speaking from the ship via satellite phone in blizzard conditions, said a Chinese icebreaking vessel was expected to arrive within the next 24 hours. …

It was a “relief” to know help was on the way, Turney said.

He had hoped a change in weather might help free the vessel but several low pressure systems had continued.

“We’re right in the middle of a storm at the moment but the forecast is a lot better for [today].”

We’re surrounded by sea ice, we just can’t get through,” Turney said in a video posted on YouTube.

Anthony Watts explains who Chris Turney is:

The expedition is being led by Chris Turney, “climate scientist”, who has “set up a carbon refining company called Carbonscape which has developed technology to fix carbon from the atmosphere and make a host of green bi-products, helping reduce greenhouse gas levels.” The purpose of the expedition is “to discover and communicate the environmental changes taking place in the south.”

It seems they found out what the “environmental changes taking place in the south.” are.

And how is that rapidly shrinking ice cap getting along?

From the WUWT sea ice page, Antarctic Sea Ice is more than 2 standard deviations above normal:

And where is the ship?

    At least he has again proven the definition of Expert = x being the unknown factor and spurt being a drip under pressure……..

    Well kiss my hairy arse, who would have seen that coming, there is a God.

    that graph of sea ice levels isn’t particularly relevant to the global warming debate .

    • Magoo

      Melting ice is not evidence of AGW, but the tropospheric hot spot is – without it there is no evidence for positive feedback from water vapour which is supposed to account for 1/2 to 2/3′s of the projected warming.

      http://joannenova.com.au/2010/10/is-the-western-climate-establishment-corrupt-part-9-the-heart-of-the-matter-and-the-coloring-in-trick/

      • Other_Andy

        “Melting ice is not evidence of AGW”
        Yes it is. According to their models, both Arctic and Antarctic sea ice should be going down. Only Arctic sea ice should be going down faster.
        The problem is that Antarctica is cooling (Very slightly) and sea ice is breaking records.
        Another problem is of course that quite a few of them predicted that the Arctic should have been ice-free last summer. This didn’t happen either as new sea ice grew at record levels.

        • Magoo

          Melting is evidence of warming, not what caused the warming. Even if the poles were to melt to nothing there would be no evidence that it was due to AGW without a tropospheric hotspot. As you say, both poles are supposed to be melting and Antarctica refuses to play ball, therefore their models are proven wrong on yet another front.

    • Other_Andy

      Sorry, but polar amplification is a core principle of global warming theory.
      Or should that be was?
      That was of course before (According to some very ‘clever scientists’) is was a sign of global cooling.
      They change their theory so often that it makes my head spin.
      More ice-> global warming.
      Less ice -> global warming.
      Droughts -> global warming.
      Floods -> global warming.
      No snow -> global warming.
      More snow -> global warming.
      And yes, I have peer reviewed (You scratch my back I scratch yours) papers and statements from one of those (clueless) ‘climate scientists’ to back it up.

      And when the hot spot didn’t appear the heat snuck unnoticed passed Argo to hide under 2000 meters where it cant (surprise, surpise..) be measured.
      And then there are some that still believe those activists and grand-whoring ‘climate scientists’.

        I’m just wondering why WO put up a graph of sea ice when land ice melt is more likely to be an issue

        • Other_Andy

          Land ice (Glaciers) have been melting for 9000 years with ‘bumps’ up and down.
          Sea ice around Antarctica and in the Arctic should have been melting according to their theory (Polar amplification).
          They have been proven wrong (again and again and again…..).

          • bart

            nonsense , as I’ve pointed out already there’s multiple reasons for sea ice to grow that are consistent with GW

        • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Whaleoil

          Check out the temperature at the South Pole mid summer…I bet it is still below zero degrees…not quite sure how that land based ice is ever going to melt…with a 0.4 degree rise in temperatures

          • bart

            but the land ice is shrinking , and that could explain a growth in sea ice

            Perhaps the most confusing detail – the growth of sea ice around
            Antarctica – is also a direct response to climate change, said Andrew
            Carleton, professor of physical geography at Penn State University.
            Despite the warming climate, sea ice surrounding the continent has
            increased about one percent every decade between 1979 and 2008,
            according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

            It seems counter intuitive, but that growth is a result of the
            glacial melt happening on the rest of the continent, Carleton said. As
            fresh water melts into the ocean it decreases the salinity of the
            seawater, he explained. Water with less salt content freezes at a higher
            temperature, so even with warming air temperatures melting the
            glaciers, the Antarctic Ocean continues to gain sea ice.”

          • bart

            no answer eh? . Another reason the ice is growing is that a warming atmosphere means more moisture in the air…

    • Bunswalla

      Of course it isn’t particularly relevant, since it demolishes the case for AGW. It must be dismissed immediately lest you be shown for the fool you are. Oh, thank you, I see you’ve already done that.

      • bart

        you’re the fool , you didn’t even understand my comment . I’ve still got an open mind about GW. I’d say you have a closed mind but that’d imply you have a brain.

  • OrphanIsland

    Oh well, they’ll have a chance to work on their tan …

    These pious, bludging, idioys should be berated upon thier return. Who actually pays for all this nonesense and thier no doubt massive fees….o, that would be us then! ?

  • justin

    That is just the best Christmas news. Laughing my arse off.

  • Rodger T

    It seems beyond the comprehension of these numpties that you can only sail to Antarctica in the summer months when the fucking ice MELTS,yet they use the ice melting as evidence of their crackpot theories.
    Maybe if the ice started melting in winter we might take them seriously, and yet I have never seen it explained how ,when even at the height of summer, temperatures are around 20 below at the poles,yet they expect us to believe the poles are in imminent danger of being ice free.
    There used to be a time when the doomsayers stood on street corners wearing sandwich boards, now they have climate science degrees and have every utterance reported by a breathless,witless media.

  • Garbageman

    Just cos i can

  • MarcWills

    Now 3 icebreakers en-route – well that’s going to be good for their carbon footprint legacy then. Still a fair way to go to reach Al Gore’s massive monument to stupidity and entitelment though.

    • wazsah

      The 3 “ice breakers” are very unequal. The Chinese ship Xuelong is an genuine ex USSR built ice breaker and I hear it will arrive first tonight –
      http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/nov/08/china-antarctica-trip-icebreaker-snow-dragon
      The Australian AAD ship Aurora Australis
      http://www.antarctica.gov.au/webcams/aurora
      often gets stuck in ice anyway so is no great shakes as an ice breaker –
      http://www.warwickhughes.com/blog/?p=2507
      so I think it was a waste of time AMSA asking them to drop what they were doing re-supplying at Casey Base to sprint over 650miles to assist The Australasian Antarctic Expedition AAE who were in no danger anyway.
      The French icebreaker is fairly small and I doubt could hold a candle to the Chinese ship Xuelong.
      To make interesting background there are tensions with China over their “Southern Quarry Manager” making statements critical of China enlarging their air defense zone south of Korea.
      Over the decades Australia has put its mark on more than its fair share of Antarctica – a segment of over 90 degrees of longitude in which we have 3 bases.
      Now we have the Chinese – a future great power expanding their footprint down there.
      So I am sure there are some interesting nuances in the situation playing out as the Xuelong makes a path to open sea for the AAE.
      The AAE main aim seems to be to take some temperature measurements to compare with those from the Mawson Expeditions of a century ago – I think you can guess what their conclusions will be.

      Update: 2 of the Ice Breakers have failed to reach the ship due to too much Ice.

      I thought the Science was Settled .

    That will teach him asking them to stop the boat so he take the temperature of the water. Wasting money and wasting money, wonder who pays for this trip, the aussy govt the Russians must be pissing with laughter?

      One thing is for sure the fucktard stuck in the ice is not paying for it. I say leave them there, let them walk out.
