I remember back in the UK in 1976 I opened my account with what was then the Midland Bank (now HSBC) as it was the only bank that had an ATM in town. It was not much more advanced than this, in that you got a plastic clip that held 10 £1 notes. The card was returned to you, but it had a dimple punched into it to tell you how many times you had used it, and the card only worked 30 times, normally the bank would send you out a new card after the 25th withdrawal.
By the early 80s the technology was upgraded and the ‘display’ was a rolling message (like a roll of wall paper), and it was great fun to try and make it produce a message that meant it had to do the most amount of winding to get to that message.
