Whaleoil 2014 – part 3

This is one of a number of posts I’m doing today on the past and future of Whaleoil. ¬†Here is Part 3, it follows Part 1 and Part 2.

Is there something stirring in you to be part of the Whaleoil Ground Crew?

Good.

But it is scary to put your hand up.  You only have so much time, and then there is that big commitment later this year, so you better not offer.

And that’s the way we both lose.

Whatever it is what you want to do.  Whatever it is that you can do.  It may just be living in the right location for that once in a year event.  You might need to go take a photo.   Or if you have the courage, an interview. Or something a lot less glamorous like go into your local council and look something up.

We need people to create, file,  and follow up on Official Information Act requests.

Training is given, support is always available, and you only offer the time you are willing to commit.

If you circumstances change, no big deal.

We need more ground crew to train up to do the basic posts – the Mental Health Break, Face of the Day, Map of the Day, nightly video posts, the nightCap and Trivia posts. ¬†It isn’t that the current Ground Crew are doing a bad job or are leaving, it is because we don’t want them to burn out.

Our Ground Crew are valued and respected, so we are constantly looking for new people to lighten their load.

Full training is given.

Fund raising continues to be one of the realities of running an organisation, and we’ve heard you mention merchandise many times. ¬†T-Shirt, polo shirts, caps, mugs, flags… Cam and I would like to do this. ¬†But everything has a cost. ¬†When we are busy selling T-Shirts, who is watching the engine room?

Some of you reading this are thinking “Damn, I run a T-shirt business”, or “I provide promotional items”, and you are more than half-way there already. ¬†Drop us a line and see what we can do for each other.

Whaleoil is going to take off this year.  I can guarantee it.

How much is going to be limited by the amount of time we can spend on it.

Your help, at all levels, anywhere in the country, from basic research, record keeping to perhaps even running a Whaleoil merchandise store, is going to determine how successful we will all be at the end of 2014.

    Great!
How about a “donate to Whale Oil Beef Hooked” button somewhere on the blog?
That’s be a nice and simple way to raise a few dollars and I’ll bet that it’d be very well used.
    *I’d* like to donate.

    • GazzW

Totally with you thor. I am unsure of how best I can contribute on a practicable basis & if needs must can ease my conscience with a donation. Far better than subscribing to the Horrid paywall!

In election year we really need a strong and honest WOBH to combat the MSM.

    • unitedtribes

How about having a button on each post that if hit automatically takes a small donation from you. If you like the post hit the button. Gathers funds and tells the WO which posts are popular.

  • Agent BallSack

I am an engraver so may be able to sponsor something in the way of awards etc should WOBH ever need something physical for Dodgy Politician of the year etc. It’s one thing to name someone that, but getting photos of someone handing it to the politician would be a coup IMO.

    • hookerphil

Looks like PBD will be eligible for 2013 and 2014 now – now, what physical something could it be?

      • Agent BallSack

Something made from phylate free latex?

        • Adam Michaels

Perhaps something made of cement- much the way some mafia showed their approval of an individual by immersing the guy in freshly poured concrete.

    • Roland

I have a small ‘jobbing’ foundry and would be happy to cast some bronze or pewter ‘whale awards’

  • motorizer

Is it possible to post a high resolution whaleoil logo that we can take to get printed ourselves.

    • Steve (North Shore)

I have already done that with the logo at the top of the blog. I did not steal it, I copied it and informed WO. Amazing how many people recognise the WhaleOil logo on a tee shirt

  • Agent BallSack

Also I am thinking of retiring this profile this year, I have been debating it the last couple of months……So if ABS stops posting just look around for a noob member who says fuck a lot.

    • maninblack

why are you retiring this profile- its a great name.

      • Agent BallSack

lol yeah I like it but if I am going to be associated in a professional capacity at some stage I am dodgy about being known as ABS…maybe I will multi profile…some people already know who I am and the beauty about WOBH is we can say what we like without fear of it impacting on our business lives.

        • Cowgirl

Change the name to something similar using ABS? Or change the name but keep the same avatar until we all catch on?

          • ropteron

Just call yourself ‘antilock braking system’ and we’ll know who you are ;)

          • Adam Michaels

That’s a good idea. Maybe reverse the letter order and become SBA?

    • unitedtribes

      Try auctioning it on trademe

    • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Travis Poulson

I’m sure I could maintain both accounts.

      • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Pete

When are you going to use your real name? The gurnard isn’t satisfied with your current one.

        • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Travis Poulson

Oh, maybe I’ll switch back to Travdog.

    • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Pete

I changed from Petal to Pete. Just change, the rest of us will catch up :)

I do hear you when you say you don’t want it to effect your business. I ran a business that had hard Labour and union people as clients. If they knew who I was after hours all hell would have broken loose, especially since I was trusted with all their information.

Since I am a professional, those boundaries were never crossed, although the knowledge that I was on Whaleoil would have lost me business instantly.

We all have to pay our mortgage, or whatever, so having a screen name is a sensible step.

  • dyannt

How does a volunteer sign up for this Army?

  • Michael

With the Whale army under starters orders I’m scared. No, wait – all ratbags are scared. Me, I’m excited.

  • Whafe

3 great parts to what is going to be an amazing 2014 for Whaleoil… A whole lotta yeah ha I say.

Agree, some how we need to be able for those of us that would like to donate, or pay etc. I know many will not wish to, but many will. Me, yes
