Hager’s Book

No doubt you will all want to talk about Hager’s book, even though none of us¬†read it yet. ¬†This is the post to chat about it if you like – leave the Backchat for other things.

It is of course likely to be a very single sided affair, and a direct attack on the government to hurt it at election time.  What is being framed here is only one side of politics in New Zealand.  Hager conveniently appears to avoid what happens on the left.

But that’s ok. ¬†Nothing changes.

I’ve only just got to Korea¬†where I have pre-existing arrangements.

To other media РI will be hard to get hold of for a while.  Time difference and a full schedule will get in the way.  If you like, get your stuff to me via email instead of phoning me.

And if you like, my absence can be spun as part of the conspiracy story that Hagar has put together.

Of course it will be fascinating to get a glimpse behind the scenes of New Zealand politics. ¬†Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

    • thor42

      Good on you, Pete.
      ( You must be well overdue for a holiday….. :) )

    • Nechtan

I see what you meant now, there is some burley being thrown in the water in the hope of hook up.

  • Sally

Just posted this elsewhere but really should be here.

Waiting for the 2 main left blogs come out and say they are impartial and never, ever have the the Labour/Green/InternetMana’s feeding them information.

  • Michael

the irony of his book being called “Dirty Politics” given is who left lean bias on life.

also think it’s amusing Cam’s fav herald reporter broke it on the herald.

  • Dcrown

Ironically Cameron asked in his previous post: “Will rational debate return?”
Looking at the latest revelations coming from Nick Hagers new book I suspect Slater has directly, although unwittingly, answered his own question.

  • Dave’s not here man.

Does it come with complementary tin foil and instructions for constructing a hat?

  • rangitoto

Looks like Hagar has given Whale lots of free publicity.

  • GarethsPussy

On the topic of Hagar’s book, I can….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……..

  • Willard79

News at 11. Whale oil and national email each other! Big F’ing whoop.

  • GregM

My first thought would be this. It appears that the “leaked” emails seem to have been obtained when the website was taken down. If any correlation could be drawn from that, and it could be proven. someone is in deep trouble. And it isn’t Cam.

  • Jp

Walking through CBd Wellington news networks ready for the 6pm live cross
-at least they aren’t talking about cunliffe

  • GarethsPussy

What next? Lyn Prentice and Cunliffe exchange emails?

    You heard it there last….

    #sinisterplotobviouslygetyourtinfoilhats

  • la la land

Hahaha hager uses stolen emails to complain about others swapping secrets….

    • CommonSense404

      Again…

      • kiwibattler

I wonder who hacked whaleoil?………maybe someone who thinks themselves one of the world’s great hackers?

        • Sally

Will be interesting who Hagar acknowledges in his book.

          • Daniel

I wonder where he got the mega load of cash to get the book published.

          • Picard110

Careful, Slander, even when implied, is silly.

        • Rick H

It most certainly could not have been the West Coast “ferals”.

          • rantykiwi

Don’t be so sure – I am good friends with a West Coast feral ex-colleague who is definitely up to the task (and I’d describe him like that in front of him). He didn’t do it – he’s a 2 blue ticks type of guy, but his skill set whilst uncommon isn’t unique. I’d be less sure about a Golden Bay dwelling feral ex-colleague though – he’s probably up to the task too, and has the necessary political leanings

        • Dave_1924

The team for the blog hinted very strongly they knew who was behind it…. could make for interesting counter offensive material in a few days…..

    • Allan

publishing presumably private emails must open a whole legal can of worms!

      • Dcrown

        Ask Cameron Slater.

  • kiwibattler

Is it more than a coincidence that Labours catch-phrase for this election is ‘vote positive’?

  • phronesis

Cam already boasted on prime time TV that he had National MP’s phone numbers.

  • Travis Poulson

Corin Dann practically creaming himself holding the book on the news.

    • Carl

Paddy Gower was the same on tv3.

      • Cunliffe for PM

Paddy Gower always looks like a kid opening his presents on Christmas Day when he has some dirt on National.

        • rantykiwi

Paddy Gower always looks like a kid opening his presents on Christmas Day when he thinks he has some dirt on National.

The CfP… I fixed it for you.

          • Cunliffe for PM

My mistake! My name’s sarcastic, no way would i want Cunliffe PM :-)

    • Macca

Not practically Trav – I’m pretty sure he did!

      • RM

I definitely saw a small bulge in his trousers.

        • cows4me

It was probably his incontinence panties, he’ll have wet himself for sure.

    • GarethsPussy

Why was he pretending this wasn’t common knowledge, so much so that it has been on TVNZ several times in the past few years, including Cam’s cellphone contacts, which included the PM?

Corin, our household was laughing long and loud – at you. How can you call yourself a journalist?

  • Mark

And in other explosive news the Pope is Catholic.

  • kiwibattler

What a surprise – not mentioned on TV1 intro but number one story on TV3 and Hager is on Campbell live tonight.

    • Sally

      Top story on TV1

      • kiwibattler

Was it? I didn’t see it in the opening so I turned on TV3…..

    • kayaker

I watched the TV1 news intro tonight. They put up all the lead stories – the Tuhoe apology, Robin Williams, Lauren Bacall. Then they put all that behind them and went into this… “but leading tonight’s news” and there it was, Nicky Hager’s book launch.

I feel strongly that the aforementioned people were far more worthy of focus, but TV1’s approach did them no respect. Robin and Lauren have had a more (positive) impact on the world and are far and beyond better people than this low-life conspiracy theorist.

  • Sponge

What part of this is news? Key himself said some time ago that he talks to Cameron. Does Cunliffe not talk to Prentice of the Standard?

Also Hager rants about privacy but seems happy to use stolen emails. A nuclear grade hypocrite that man.

  • BigDes

So. What’s new. Everyone already knows this info. No different to Presland setting up secret trusts for the founder of Fonterra. Who cares move on.

  • thor42

I think the book may well have the opposite effect of that intended.

I think a very large number of people (having seen defaced billboards and so on) will just be thinking “(sigh….) – here the Left go again…….. ”

The book’s title is *wonderfully* ironic – “Dirty Politics”.

  • Bazz Stewart

Lol @ a bombshell, Blah everyone knows politics is a “dirty” game Nicky!

    • Travis Poulson

“Politics is a dirty despicable game played by dirty despicable people” – Cam Slater

      • Picard110

And he is part of it.

        • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz BlokeinTakapuna

Probably a very large, influential part of it I recon.

…and they did it all using truth and facts against a well financed Old Media… And they continue to just get better and better…

          • Picard110

Being a large part of a dirty despicable game is not a good thing.

          • Dave_1924

very true when are Bomber, mickey and LPrent going to repent ; )

          • Picard110

Just after slater repents for his sins.

          • Rick H

Is it still “dirty” if you let people know the “truth”?
Or only “dirty” when telling porkies, or fabricating lies?

        • Nechtan

Yes he is, and far more effective than all the lefty blogs/bloggers combined.

      • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz BlokeinTakapuna

Yeah… But it’s the only politics we got…

Never really enjoyed politics until finding WOBH…

  • Sally

If David Farrar has 1 whole chapter, how many has Cam got?

  • maninblack

How is it news that prime ministers office and whale oil communicate? Key admitted it on the news. Cam was even on 7 sharp showing the reporter he has john keys number in his phone!

  • Rex

Corin Dann, looks so excited! But about what? So JK knows Cam! Whoop dee de. Media trying to make a story out of nothing. As for Hager if I said what I though about him I would be banned from this site.

    • Snoop

That is such old news … lol …
John Key said that in an interview ages ago …

  • Reid

The key in this is how the media play it. And guess how that is going to pan out?

  • Richard

    Hager has published 6 books.

All but 1 coincide to be released in an election year, shortly before an election date and overwhelmingly attack right wing issues and interests.

It’s quite clear he has used our elections in a cynical manner to increase book sales.

    • Damon Mudgway

We all have a place in the world, even Hagar has his audience. Ultimately all one has to do before one passes on is “have I added some value to the world?”

All narcissists will answer with a resounding “yes”. I expect Hagar will fit quite tidily into this category.

I didn’t even know who he was until Cam bought him to my attention some time ago. So there you go, Mr Slater has done more to make him ‘famous’ than anyone else I know.

  • Rex

What sort of …wits would pay money for whatever drivel Hager writes. Just expensive fire lighters. JK won’t even waste his time reading it.

    • Picard110

You mean like the police reports on john banks.

      • Dave_1924

relevance to the topic of discussion Piccard? Banks and Nicky Hagars book???

        • Picard110

Replying to the comment the key won’t read it.

He tends not to read things that incriminate him, or will make his life hard. So he ignored him.

And please don’t play moderator with me.

          • Dave_1924

Would never dream of of it Piccie….

As Auntie Hulun use to same Time to move along….. Painting what painting???

  • George Burrell

There will be red faces all right. This book can sit along side the other text book on politics – “The Hollow Men”

  • Ross15

I hope you are right thor42.
I’m no computer expert , but when Whale Oils site crashed earlier in the year was that the result of someone hacking W/O computer system ? If so were the hackers able to be tracked ( ie. is that possible) ?
Something tells me that Cameron’s relatively relaxed response to the book suggests he knows a lot more about the behind the scenes situation for this book and we might hear a lot more about it. If I’m right Cam –go get Hager and smash him ( figuratively !!)

    • thor42

“…was that the result of someone hacking W/O computer system?”

Might have been. Could have been caused by several things.

  • Edwin Wigmore

I would give about as much credence to Hagars book as a belief in tooth fairies. I remember Michael Bassett saying there was a whole page of emails in the hollow men that had not come from him. Hagar completely fabricated them.

Mind you, on the other hand, I personally thought it was disgraceful that John Key refused to back Brash and left him out to drive. Might be Karma.

    • thor42

“…Michael Bassett saying there was a whole page of emails in the hollow
men that had not come from him. Hagar completely fabricated them.”

      Interesting. So, he has “form”…..

  • Wozza

Cam, if anyof these emails were illegally obtained, could any profit of the book this dick wrote be confiscated as “proceeds of crime”?

    • thor42

Cam’s overseas at present but to answer your question – “possibly”.

    • SueH

What…like the stolen hard drive that ended up in Cam’s hands, you mean?

      • JeffDaRef

I don’t think WO is silly enough to make the same song and dance over it.
        There are only two consequences:
        – it’ll be very hard for WO to lose the current case around that drive
        – Hagar takes a long fall off his high horse
Both outcomes = fine by me!

      • http://www.cadlow.co.nz spanishbride

It WASN’T stolen sigh…… This has been proved in court yet the slander remains. Beleive it if it gives you comfort.

        • Picard110

          It was dirty politics though.

          • Dave_1924

Dirty politics…. Politics is dirty by definition…..

          • Picard110

But slater has made it worse, and now there is physical proof.

          • Dave_1924

            Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnn………..

          • Picard110

How is that relevant to the thread.

          • Dave_1924

I suppose its not really Picci but ya know its yawn inducing

Always nice listening to you …..

          • Dave

its only dirty politics if a) it was politics, B) if its not true, or has the truth spun out.

  • Cowgirl

I really don’t see how this is news. We already know this, and I doubt I’m going to be ‘shocked’ by any of it.

  • yossarian

Isn’t Hager’s book (as I see it being described) a perfect example of Labour/leftie collaboration in dirty politics? And the timing of its publication? Clearly Mr Hager has no sense of irony, apart from any other senses he lacks.

  • George Burrell

Lots of brave talk here, but be prepared for the worst I say. Leaks to Whaleoil, leaks to Nicky Hager, leaks all over the show!

    http://wellington.scoop.co.nz/?p=69809

    • Reid

The worst what? Innuendo? Lies? Preaching to the choir? Feel free to expand the list…

      • Picard110

        Truth exposed?

        • Reid

Spoken like a true hollow man…

    • Sorry for Being a Man

Yawn, this will only be of interest to a few slobbering lefties, most of us couldn’t give a hoot.
Dirty politics? who would of thought…

      • Reid

Yes but the point is there’s a lot of people in the media who are aforesaid slobbering lefties and guess how they’re going to breathlessly spin this?

  • Reid

See Hagar’s on Campbell tonight. Wonder why he isn’t going on 7Sharp?

    • Snoop

Becos he needed a rehearsed script … lol …

    • kayaker

Pre-arranged I suspect. Campbell will be like a dog with slipper. Marvellous!

      • Reid

Yes. Let’s just hope he doesn’t slobber. That might turn off the punters.

    • Picard110

Because he wants a fair go as opposed to dealing with the guy who spoke at the national party conference.

      • Reid

Isn’t it a bit like the Israeli Ambassador appearing on Fox New’s Hannity to explain their latest Gaza Operation, or is that somehow mysteriously completely different and not at all analogous? (To use an analogy a lefty can relate to, just in case you are one…)

        • Picard110

Yeaaaa, not the same at all.

          • Reid

            Why? (Precisely…)

            ?

      • Nechtan

If all his “facts” are indeed true then he should be able to handle any interviewer. Having John Campbell giving him a cuddle and free pass (as he did with Len Brown) is hardly a fair go.

        • rantykiwi

Campbell was less cuddly than I expected (ie he didn’t rush over and kiss Nicky). Hager came across as a nebbish.

    • mary

Because as Helen Clarke stated. John Campbell is a far left slimy little creep. They suit each other. God what an interview. Nicky telling his story and John getting more and more excited by the minute. He will be jumping around in his seat, waving his arms and stuttering and grunting more than usual. Could be good for a laugh. If it didn’t make you sick.

  • Mark

Nicky Hager doing exactly what he accuses others of. Trawling through private emails for dirt. hypocrite

    • Reid

No apparently he’s taken it from the comments. We’re all going to be famous people! I just hope he looked at mine over Len’s little problems, that’d be just great.

      • cows4me

He won’t get much out of me, I still don’t know who Mr8% had lunch with.

        • jude

I am so relieved I am not the only New Zealander who doesn’t know:)

  • Captin Da

4 weeks in a leaky boat.. enjoy the ride folks!! :)

  • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Pete

So, you must be wondering what the mood is at WOBH HQ :)

Of course, the fact that our personal conversations are in the hands of other people is a concern only because we don’t know their level of ethics. You say things that are truly personal. Sometimes about medical issues, and so on. I hope those have been left out of the book.

But apart from that, we’re kind of excited about it. And you should be too. You’re going to get a behind the curtain peek of some of what happens in New Zealand politics.

And although it will primarily draw from Whaleoil, the same happens at The Standard and the Daily Blog (among others).

For serious pundits, this will be a great book, I’m sure.

Hope they haven’t got too many things wrong – we’ll let you know if they stuffed up.

It’s going to be interesting to see if it is a factual account or deliberately pieced together using out of context misquoted materials.

But in the mean time, we thinks this is exciting stuff! :)

    • kayaker

It’s a can of worms. I think all factions (and I suspect even more the left) will be running for cover. It will be interesting to see who says what, if anything. It will be a matter of people in glass houses, etc.

      • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Pete

The tricky stuff is that the ‘other side’ can’t say too much, because they do the same thing.

And let’s face it, the fact that Whaleoil is considered poorly by the left isn’t new.

    • Damon Mudgway

Another day in the life of WO, I’m so excited I could wet my pants. Awesome, awesome stuff.

    • GregM

Agreed. This is going to backfire on the left I reckon. They continue to believe they can open a political can of worms and only cook the right leaning ones.

      • Damon Mudgway

I’ve just been to the supermarket to buy beer, crisps, marinated mussels and adult diapers. I’m SO settling in over the next few days.

      • Picard110

If the emails are valid, then do not be so sure.

    • Sally

Your job is done. Boasted readership by hundreds.
      Better thank Nicky

      • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Pete

You have no idea how much we’re laughing right now :)

The free publicity is genuinely priceless.

        • Mrs_R

You truly are an inspiration Pete. You see the cup as being half full and you make lemonade from the lemons :)

        • Sponge

Thats what I thought when I heard about this. The left already loathe WO so their opinion won’t change and this storm in a teacup will massively increase exposure to the country. That is a good thing.

          Bravo Nicky!

      • MykillS

        Did you mean “boosted”?

    • Euan Ross-Taylor

From the little that has been reported and trying to read between the lines of what is in the book, I think plenty of people who pay for it thinking they are going to be intrigued, will regret paying the purchase price. It sounds like it will just confirm what we all expect. Cam talks to National MPs.

    • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz BlokeinTakapuna

So, may I ask, did “they” actually break into WOBH systems and steal info?

      • WallyAnchor

Yeah, that’s what I was wondering. It was the blog that was targeted and was unavailable/offline for a period. Surely the type of information being referred to is stored completely separate to the blogsite?

    • kiwibattler

Hey Pete – was internet security really that poor at Whaleoil before the site crash? All of this is pretty ironic considering Whaleoil exposed Labour’s poor internet security.

      • Honcho

Ha! Labour didn’t have poor internet security, they had NO internet security!!!
I wouldn’t have thought many sites would be able to stay online in the face of a DDOS attack like this one experienced earlier this year, doesn’t mean the site is unsecure, just means its possible to take it down regardless of weather it is secure or not.

      • http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/ Pete

“Whaleoil” is Cam at home on one PC. I have no idea if security “was that poor”.

  • Statehousekid

Whoo hoo. What a windfall for Cam. This is really going to give him massive publicity. He will be getting more readers now than the Herald, Dom Post and The Press combined. Thanks Nicky your book is the best advertising Whaleoil could ever possibly hope for and will really put Cameron Slater on the map. If you want a go with Cameron I hope you realise what you are taking on. He has way more readers and supporters than you will ever hope to have.

  • Kopua Cowboy

It will be interesting to see how much is factual, and how much was invented but presented as “Oh look, we got this after the DOS attack”

    • rantykiwi

Sounds like a convenient excuse to divert attention from how the alleged emails were gathered. There’s got to be a good back story about where the emails were stolen from – I’m guessing either Hager’s making things up, someone’s about to get fired from National, or Dotler has been up to his old hacking tricks. I really hope it is the latter of the three – it gives an instant excuse to incarcerate and then deport him.

      • thor42

“…or Dotler has been up to his old hacking tricks.”

I *do* remember that at that time Cam said that he was either certain or very sure who was behind the attacks on this site.

        • Damon Mudgway

Remember everyone Cam has some very interesting info he will be releasing on Dotler a week before the election. Coincidence?

  • JeffDaRef

So WO is on speed-dial from the Beehive, and Soper barely got into the Kumeu church hall….I’ll get up from laughing so hard soon…

  • Odd Ball

Meh, much ado about nothing, the book is called dirty politics, but there is far more material freely available about this topic, courtesy of KDC, Mana, etc.
Also it’s election year, and Hagar was bound to publish an attack piece on National.
For my monies worth, subscribe to the herald instead of buying his book, that way you have a constant supply of paper to start the fire with.

    • SVlover

Dirty Politics. Yes indeed this election is full of dirty politics, and it isn’t coming from National. It must have taken NH a while to write, edit and publish this book. Tonight, it will be so out of date!

And…Whaleoil’s Cam Slater is a Right winger – wow!!!! That is the latest news???

  • Julian Garrett

Jesus. You guys are twitchy… Why not actually hold your breath until you read what he has to say first.

Of course he’ll be hyping it, and of course you guys will be taking the bait.

Calm down and read it first.

    • peterwn

Twitchy – nah! Just laughing their heads off.

    • kiwibattler

David Farrar already has his copy so expect him to be one of the first to spill the beans on it’s contents.

    • A Goldie

sorry, will not be wasting my time nor money doing that. Got sucked into that previously.

    • Willard79

I’ve no interest in reading Hager’s book. That would make me an enabler.

  • Picard110

By the sound of it, it confirms what is rather common knowledge. Slater has close ties with National and does a lot of their attack work.

Some maybe surprised, but most who follow politics won’t be.

  • Honcho

His last book ‘Other peoples wars’ was a curious mix of fact and fiction, unsurprising being that he was completely on the outside looking in and speculating, the only thing in ‘other peoples wars’ that was actually factually correct was information that could (and most likely was) sourced from official websites, the rest could only have been made up, He had a few names of officials, but he had basic basic facts incorrect, the likes of ranks and position. I can understand the need to pour a little sugar on a story to make it a little bit sweeter to the tongue, but as an ‘investigative journalist’ Hagar fell flat, no fact checking, no real facts, all unsubstantiated lies.

I expect this book to be much the same, Cam hasn’t hidden anything, he is the first to tell everyone here what is going on (once he has fact checked!!!) and when the time is right, Cam didn’t hack labour party computers, any child with an interest of computers could have back room access to their unsecured servers, it comes as no surprise an adult with an interest in computers did, it wasn’t hacking, and Cam was very upfront about what he did, it was a story but it was a story we heard years ago. The book probably reads like the whaleoil archive, but with a devious spin and a few unsubstantiated lies thrown in to make it a bit more of a story, I don’t need to read it.

    • Molon Labe

Thanks Honcho. Many book’s on these wars, pro and for, are a world away in terms of research, visiting the lands and interviewing key players in the likes of, Afghanistan, Yemen and Iraq, often at great personal risk to the writer or blogger.

Hagar, even when listening to him on Checkpoint tonight, sounds like he’s scared of his shadow. I am not surprised that he writes from afar in little safe NZ.

Sum’s him up in my view. I’m all for good research, even if it doesn’t appeal to my way of thinking, however Mr Hagar’s works are not on my reading list.

  • webzoned

Isn’t this just someone on the left, stealing information from the right – about how someone on the right got information about someone on the left? The only person we know actually stole information is Harger. Fascinating.

    • WallyAnchor

Exactly. The hypocrisy is staggering, although not unexpected.

  • Blackcap

Corin Dann just then was pretty centred I thought. Quoted something from the 2011 campaign in the book (thats old news) and then said Slaters name again (free advertising) and said that there are 2 sides to the story and that the PM has not had a chance to respond.

    • Santa Fe fan

Don’t for your own sanity please!

I’m watching. Know your enemy and let’s face Campbell is all in with the coalition of the damned.

Corrin Dan, says “It’s going to be pretty interesting over the next couple of days how both sides are going to spin it”. So Corrin, who is spinning it at the moment – hint, you will see him in the mirror.

  • Cunliffe for PM

before i being my name is sarcastic!!! The left wingers are foaming at the mouth. Smart voters know its responsible policies that will win this election, not some money-making book. It’s the people who will be brainwashed by this book that i feel sorry for.

    • jude

Welcome aboard :) I recognise your name from the 3 news site. It is a lot more civilised here. No nastiness or name calling here;)

      • Cunliffe for PM

yes the 3news site is a like listening 1000s of left wing monkeys stuck in an elevator.

I am not wasting my money purchasing this book! In fact I have none of Hagers books on my bookshelf. Will Whale have a serialised section where the gist of his book is explained to us all?
I am very happy that Whale gets massive amounts of free publicity! Excellent, I hope you have a lot more new readers and people willing to share their views on this site;)

    • Toby

Likely the only people who will buy it will be extreme lefties who aren’t going to vote for national anyway, the media and a whole pile of right wingers who want to see what rubbish he has written now.

Your average factory worker from Taranaki is not going to buy or read this book, nor care.

All the book proves is that Hagar is a thief of private communications.

This is somewhat ironic given his outrage at government interception of private communications.

Is it ok to steal private data so long as it isn’t the government doing it?

    • Euan Ross-Taylor

But will we see any of the media call him on it?

      • oldgolfer

        That will be a no

    • Old Man, Torbay.

It is illegal to steal private data.

  • Mark

I reckon it’s a cunning plan by Cam Slater to boost his website numbers.. Absolutely brilliant. You pay a lot for that sort of advertising. He should be thanking Hager for doing such a good job. They probably wrote it together. jokes

    • The Whinging Pom

I certainly think that this could bring a lot more traffic Cam’s way. And that when the majority of those people see the blog, and read what the articles are saying, they’ll come back more regularly. And more of the Left wing luvvie hegemony of the MSM will be eroded.

Despite the early jubilation, this could end up being yet another peppering of the feet of the left with 12 bore shot.

      • unitedtribes

Im sure Cam has had a heads up on this and has his powder dry

Umm Cameron correct me if I am wrong here.
But aren’t your emails on a different system/server to the one your website is hosted on?
Don’t you use a GMAIL based email system? So if this was the case If they just hacked your website they would not of got those emails

    • Berend de Boer

I think whaleoil is a lot of servers. And yes, email, at least currently, goes to gmail.

    • CheesyEarWax

haha, i was thinking of the same thing. I have these advices for the journalists to ask Nicky Hagar.
      1. Emails are not kept on websites, so are the emails that NH has are real and not fabricated? Only a computer forensic expert can verify that.
      2. Website attacks, like the DDoS on WO, are not very common in NZ, especially from within NZ. So its unlikely the attack as a result the “feral” post. So, did the “hacker” who just stumbled on the emails when the WO website was down or the emails were obtained in other unlawful ways (if the emails are real)?
      3. The most well known hacker (so he thinks) in NZ is Kim Dotcom, did he have any involvement in the WO DDoS attack and possessions of the emails?

  • Sorry for Being a Man

Cue David Cunliffe taking the moral high ground, stern face “typical National dirty tricks, we don’t indulge in this we’re vote positive” – pass me the sick bag.

    • Cunliffe for PM

Cunliffe thinks he is perfect, did he forget about his secret donations?

  • Cunliffe for PM

National are too busy touring the country, announcing policies and connecting with the public than to worry about a book. Meanwhile on the left we have a “f**k John Key” chant, burning an effigy of the Prime Minister, and vandalism of National billboards. So much for Labour’s vote positive campaign. Today National announced $20m for hospices, voters hopefully will focus more on that than a fairytale once upon a time book.

  • RightofSingapore

So there’s some “dirty politics” on the right, so what? Well we on the right don’t burn effigies of our opponents, we don;t vandalise their signs, we don’t scream hysterically at anyone who disagrees with us and call them racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted, paid shill for industry, we don’t dream up ridiculous conspiracy theories. We also don’t collaborate with criminals just to feather our nest or serve an agenda. We don’t let a motorcade go 180kph just to get someone to a rugby match and then leave the officers involved out to dry. We’re not AS into bribing people with their money, our lot are more likely to resign when they stuff up and they do it more readily than those on the Left, rather than drag things out into some big farce. We don’t steal taxpayer money to fund our election campaigns. We don’t try and tell others what to eat, where to live, how to get around, what to drink, what to wear. We don’t smear reputations just for political gain without any factual basis and we do NOT misuse our office or position or budget to have affairs.Just my 10 cents eh

lol.. wake up.. or can “we” as in you not do that either?

I’m not exactly sure who you are referring to as ‘right’ in the NZ context. Surely not the National Party who would be round about central at best.
However if you do consider the Nats the ‘right’ then you better reconsider some of the stuff on your list because they have certainly been guilty of alot of that stuff.

  • Lion_ess

Shock, horror – what a surprise – Whaleoil gets information via Jason Eade. Um, didn’t we already know that?
2nd Shock – the Prime Minister doesn’t need to go on the attack himself, this task is carried out by others. Sounds like smart politics to me.

  • Cowgirl

    Some thoughts:
    1) The news about WO and Key is old news – has been confirmed by the PM some months back and has been a featured fact in various articles since then. Not news.
    2) Is Ede the staffer that got in heck for emailing WO a photo of the mess left after a lefty party some time ago? If so, not news.
    3) Of course it’s dirty, it’s politics! If all there are are some links between Key’s office and WO, but no actual blowback on the PM, it’s a case of well-played politics too.
    4) If emails are obtained during cyber-attack on WO, then not ‘leaked’ but rather stolen. Can a case be made here?

Edit: untidy grammar, but not sure I made it better.

Someone pass John Campbell an inhaler … he might lose his breath from excitement.

  • kaykaybee

This is ironic on so many levels, but let’s deal with the idiocy of Nicky Hager penning a book called ‘Dirty Politics’ about an alleged right wing collaboration when, yet again his source is stolen emails.

I know the blood will be rushing to the heads of the ‘Vote Positive’ team and the more intemperate of their number, but I’d like to know how the practice of hacking into and bringing down websites and stealing and publishing people’s private emails is a good look for the positive vote team

  • JustanObserver

No surprise Hoskings did that given his anti left position.

  • Lofty [Friend of New Zealand]

      • shane

lol idiot. Did you not hear Campbell say he couldn’t comment too much, so as not to be liable. And did you not hear hagar say he was leaked huge amounts of personal messaging. Not hearsay, ya mate oil is fuked, and the Nats are unmasked as scum.

  • James Growley

Hager would have to be the biggest weasel hypocrite in the South Pacific. He continually drones on about privacy and government spying, yet here he is writing books the content of which has either been stolen or hacked. It is past the time were he should be brought to account.

The tinfoil hat wearing is saying Cam Slater was hacking Labour Computers for dirt…

    • kayaker

Yeah, I’m watching it. Prefer Seven Sharp, but wanted a laugh tonight. Aided by a cheeky chardy.

  • Reid

One of the main reasons I’ve always said lefties are good at propaganda is because they’re experts at accusing people of that which they are most guilty.

On the Campbell Live interview for example I’m watching the disingenuous Campbell and the disingenuous Hagar pretending National introduced the attack politics that started with Muldoon then went quiet for decades until Hulun resurrected them.

How cancerous and corrosive of them…

  • sheppy

Just read the TVNZ report on the book on their app. Maybe I’m missing something here but I could have summarised the information I got from the article as “no excrement Sherlock” I wonder if it mentions in the interests of balance that the standard is run by the Labour Party, or that the Auckland transport blog gets rather excited when talking about the greens?
Yet again more proof that the Left have nothing to offer NZ other than yet more whining!

    • Cowgirl

Or a certain commenter/blogger on the Standard with strong connections to Cunliffe?

      • sheppy

Another inconvenient truth that probably isn’t in the book I’d guess

    • Brian of Mt Wellington

Maybe the Labour party are in cahoots with Hagar and paid him to write his big exposè. Food for thought.

  • RossM

There’s a big difference between lifting a stone and shining a light on the little squirmy things that are under it, compared with putting things under the stone in the first place.
You can’t tell me that Cameron Slater and the National Party are responsible for David Cunliffe being a dork.

  • JustanObserver

    Campbell Live was hilarious.
    Hager was such a fluff.
    .
Here’s a dot …. oooo look there is another, and another …. hmmm not enough to make a picture, but if I add a few of my own ….
    Makes perfect sense

  • Bill Hanna

So the above post was placed at 5:45, and CL and his team didn’t even have enough nouse to check the blog in the hour before going to air.

  • Jdogg

    Ahhh, what a hoot!!
There’s no such thing as bad publicity, check your site stats over the next few days, they’ll be off the charts :))
So he’s drawn obvious links to JK’s office (which has been referred to in the public domain continuously) with hacked and stolen information, whoopty doo.

*As an aside looks like email and Facebook private communication was hacked – not so much the website? That’s a bit interesting..
He only has theories, really it’s nothing new to those in the know, those that don’t of plenty, there’ll be new readers..
Much hilarity. Much will be used out of context, much will be assumed..bring it!!

  • Brian of Mt Wellington

Hager looked like an idiot trying to convince Campbell. Hagar kept saying they were theories and you more or less have to join the dots. No mention of the unions paying to prop up Bradbury’s blog.

    • Travis Poulson

“Hager looked like an idiot trying to convince Campbell.”

Yes, well we know what Cam says about.

    • kiwibattler

Had to laugh that the best thing Campbell live could find in the short time they had the book was Cam asking someone to take a pic of a drunk Winston……..that sort of stuff takes down governments.

      • Agent Balzac

Cam owes Parliament TV the bounty I am sure

  • Second time around

Actually John Campbell seemed fairly dismissive of the book, pointing out the Kim Dotcom chanting and leaving Hager with the rather pathetic claim that Cunliffe would not have become a laughing stock if it had not been for WOBH conspiracies.

    • Toby

Cunliffe is perfectly capable of making himself look like a fool without the help of Cameron Slater.

  • Day Day

  • Souvlaki

Well….what a complete ANTICLIMAX ! There is a war on & Hagar is upset…where are my tissues ?? Matthew Hooton made the VERY pertinent comment on Larry Williams tonite, to the effect that most of Hagars work ACTUALLY comes from stolen property ! He complains about the GSCB…give us strength :-)

    • Travis Poulson

A good argument for needing the GCSB wouldn’t you say?

    • CheesyEarWax

Heard that as well, Hooton called Hagar a hypocrite on national radio.

  • Picard110

I have to say after listening to the interview, while it shows the public the real Cameron slater, and how nasty he is, it is not that earth shattering.

This will have next to no impact on politics in nz.

    • Lofty [Friend of New Zealand]

You call it nasty, which is your opinion, me, I prefer to call it running interference.

      • Picard110

Slater is a very nasty man, his own words prove that. And while most people see him for who he is, even nasty horrid people have others who like what they do.

        • Lofty [Friend of New Zealand]

Ah well my friend you know what they say about opinions don’t you….like quoits, everyone has one.

        • GregM

Have you even met Cam ? I have. Nasty is one thing he most certainly is not.

    • Agent Balzac

To those on the left the truth hurts. If Cameron is that nasty why is this consistently the #1 blog in NZ?

      • Picard110

Nasty is good for viewing. Niceness is boring. So, not really a flattering thing this place gets as many views as it does.

        • Agent Balzac

Hahaha according to that then The Daily Blog should be the most viewed blog in NZ…I see what you are thinking but it’s just.not.true

        • Travis Poulson

If you’re going to continue the incessant whine “Cam is nasty” we’ll put you out of everyone elses misery.

        • Nechtan

If that were true, Bradury’s blog and The Standard (which supposedly is the online voice of the Labour party but seems to have far more Greens) would be popular, but they aren’t.

      • Bobb

It’s because it is populated by all us nasty people. Dummy! LOL

    • Dave_1924

Gee Piccie – we agree at last! Cam can be nasty and this book is going to have zero impact….

But Cam has a crack at all spectrum’s of politics – very unflattering about Nicki Kaye, not at all keen on Simon bridges, seems unhappy with Bill English at times and has the odd jibe at Big Joycie as well.

Unlike his competitors on TDB and the Staranded. Very biased over there and they are often extremely nasty as well…..

      • Travis Poulson

You left out Brownlee, how could you miss him.

        • Dave_1924

Sorry Trav my bad – And Big Gezza from the Mainland as well…..!!!

          Need new spectacles….

      • Picard110

He slow balls when dealing with right wingers. It’s a shallow attempt to look balanced. No one with a brain is fooled.

        • Cowgirl

The piece on Nikki Kaye didn’t hold back.

          • Dave_1924

Yeah poor Nikki – nice smile, but Cam doesn’t like her dress sense one bit……

        • Dave_1924

gee Piccie – read the descriptions of non lefties on TDB or Stranded in Russia sites? Nice chatting with you – its illuminating

    • Molon Labe

I would that despite prodding for something of substance, a smoking gun from Hager, JC just kinda went well Cam Slater is nasty (according to JC’s world view) man and that was that.

Watching Johns’ body language and manner I think he was actually underwhelmed by the shallowness of it all and expected something much more.

      Yawn…

      • Brian of Mt Wellington

I think the MSM were expecting something more explosive not a little nit picking campaign from mousey Hager. That showed in the way John Campbell questioned him. Campbell probably thought ” We wasted prime time broadcasting on this rubbish”.

  • notrotsky

Well it pretty much confirms to me who attacked the Whaleoil site earlier this year and why they did it.

    • Bazz Stewart

And what will happen on Sept15th lol

      • notrotsky

Something as laughable as this I expect.

    • Picard110

That was done because of the attack on that teenager who was killed.

      • Sponge

        Says who?

        • kaykaybee

The left wing and those who launched attack say that. What we do know for sure is that yet again Nicky Hager has the private emails as a result of cyber crime. There’s the ‘Dirty Politics’ there

      • kiwibattler

Personally I think that is just an excuse for the attack – the real attack was done by someone with much bigger resources….

        • Picard110

Oh it was a pro job no doubt.

      • Dave_1924

you have knowledge, you speak with certainty. maybe you should out the person/people who attacked the site. In the spirit of cleanliness in politics which you are the champion of piccie….

        • Picard110

If I did know, which I don’t, I wouldn’t given why the attack took place.

          • Dave_1924

Ah standards and principles. love them.

          • phronesis

So you don’t know who did it but you claim to know why they did it?

      • Cowgirl

It really wasn’t – it was too sophisticated for that pack of loons. There’s no way the Brains Trust of the West Coast managed that.
There were 2 other contenders at that time: KDC and Countdown. I know which one my money is on.

    • Molon Labe

Yes, it will and Mr Hager could be in a spot of bother with that. Cue the German link? I mean its what they do stealing stuff it was/is their core competence.

  • friardo

Hang on, no-one told me this blog was right wing. Hager must be really onto you W.O. to have sniffed that out, and that you might have been in contact with right wing people in government. Still he’s cynically calculating enough to have timed it right to sell his trashy paperbacks. Hager’s credibility was venerally thin before, now it’s vanished. Hager unwell? Have you ever seen him laugh or smile or happy, of course not. He’s a socialist. Utterly negative. Still, he has nerve and probably believes his own delusions.

    • Mark

Socialists are never happy. Imagine how unhappy they would be if there were almost no people without jobs in NZ.

  • Intrigued

Quelle horreur! Is that it? Dirty politics? Really? Is that what all the hype has been about in the past 24 hours Mr Hagar? What a great joke. I found it particularly stunning watching Nicky Hagar talking about his book with such seriousness and laughed my head off when I heard he described Key as the dirtiest politician since Muldoon! Has he suffered some kind of amnesia? Or is he trying to obfuscate the truth and manipulate New Zealanders into ‘forgetting’ what the Helen Clark years were like? Quite honestly Mr Hagar you must be living in an utter fools paradise. Where is your balance and journalistic integrity you claim so righteously to have? (http://www.nickyhager.info/bruce-jesson-lecture-maidment-theatre-auckland/) You gotta feel a bit sorry for the man. Any claim to credibility as an “investigative journalist” he might have had I suspect will have been well and truly shot with this book.

    • WallyAnchor

      I can’t upvote more than once :-(

  • Stroker08

This is the biggest fizz since Star Wars Episode I.

  • bop guy

Listened to Larry, Hooten and HDPAllen on ZB briefly, skim read quickly and watched for a nano-second. That is all the reporting I wanna hear of Hager’s book. Won’t be buying it and certainly won’t be reading, listening or watching any more reporting. And guess what, world will continue to roll on tonight and tomorrow and the next day!

Though one question; who was really behind the attack on WOBH. Book suggest Hager and his ‘mates’? A feral from West Coast couldn’t have done it.

    • bop guy

And lovely work for being centre of MSM attention tonight, and for a few nights to come Cam and WOBH team!

      • Night Stick

People are already asking about the WO site and wanting to look in. Thank you Nicky Hager.

    • Gaynor

I am sure it was and maybe we will find out. He does look a horrible wee man though. What does he do for a living when he isn’t hacking away?

    • kiwibattler

      A really famous hacker maybe?

      • Mark

        KDC maybe?. dum,dum,dum….

  • Fat Sally

So just to confirm….. a right wing party is in cohorts with a right wing blogger?

My Flabber has never been more gasted.

  • OAP

Incontinence pants for reading the book, $10.00. Popcorn, beer & bacon $20. Free WO marketing…priceless

    • Blackcap

Yep everyone interested in politics and more centered will be wondering who this “Slater and Whaleoil” are and come and take a peek. My brother had not known of Whaleoil at all (he is centre right) but now has a look so now and then. Many more may follow.

  • Souvlaki

Just read Herad website….true to form ,lilke a gerbil upt the drain pipe I see “The Gurnard” reporting this issue…it does not escape many’s noyice that he is on Herr Dotlers paryroll….a much more feasible ” crasher” of Whaleoil than some low resourced “feral”…….as you know …if it looks like a duck etc etc !

  • Travis Poulson

Thanks for the page views Nicky.

    • Richard

I know Cam told Pete do to what ever it took to build the profile……..but this?
“I’ve got a plan so cunning, you could pin…..”

    • Sponge

Can you tell what they are in real time? I would be very curious as to the boost that you must have seen this evening. I am sure it would be substantial.

    • Dave_1924

Yes exactly Travis – this will drive traffic north to a high level, and at least some of the first timers will stick….. good for business no doubt

    • CheesyEarWax

The plan is going well Trav. Plant some emails on the website, create a DDoS attack and leave the website open for a hacker to stumble on, then leave it to Nicky Hagar and John Campbell to join the dots. Brilliant stuff.

  • kiwibattler

Hager would make a poor salesmen with his unconvincing performance on Campbell Live – sounds like it’s another join the dots and add some fairy dust again. Funny thing is the ‘dirty politics’ may actually be the lefty Hager writing a work of fiction based on mere smear allegations – this might actually backfire on the left.

  • Santa Fe fan

    So where’s TV 1’s ‘bombshell’!!??

    • johnnyB

I think its about a guy who wrote a book about Whale oil being aligned to the National party and posting mean stuff about the Labour Party – its actually pretty similar to the 7 Sharp piece they did on Whale oil – except longer and less entertaining.

      • Molon Labe

You can cut the irony with a knife. The Standard. of course. is a beacon of balanced and fair blogging…. :)

It’s like an episode of the Office only less believable.

        • Bobb

          Less intelligent.

  • Timboh

Flicking past TV3 and saw Campbell live had the Fargo type pictures and links and unbelievably Campbell was talking about WO who was the centre of the conspiracy. The way he was exhorting made me realise that someone from Labour said something that in retrospect I agree with. Something about a “little creep”. By the way congratulations for being the centre story on Campbell.

  • MrBarrington

Wonder if there will be much in the book that is ‘corny’….?

    • kayaker

      Genetically modified corny.

  • johnnyB

Nicky Hager joins Kim Dot Com, David Cunliffe, Russell Norman, Hone Harawira as front men for the left – seriously if this lot does not drive voters to National I will be Gobsmacked come Sept 20th.

  • knight

What’s going on with the visit to Korea and Israel ?

    • A Goldie

      disarming them all

  • Isherman

So, will he follow up with books on the ‘dirty’ aspects of the Standard, or Daily Blog, nah, wouldn’t think so.

  • Chelsearift

Someone upload a copy to Mega.com and share the link around.

    • Edward Bufe

Wouldn’t try, may just get a virus.

  • Bobb

Seven Sharp. Hosking kicked off by saying that every government, every politician, every party in his 30 years have leaked like sieves to journalists. Whats the big deal.

  • unitedtribes

    Kimdotcomgate

  • Snoop

Did Hagar know well in advance that Cam would be out of the country right now ???

  • Eiselmann

During his ‘give the man a hug’ interview Campbell asked his usual soft questions and still managed to have Hager scrambling a couple of times , if it had been a real journalist then Hager’s book launch may have fizzed as it was being filmed.
