Kiwi singer Aaradhna Jayantilal Patel surprised guests at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Thursday night, when she gave away her Tui Award.
“I feel like to accept this award, would not be true to this song, I would be a hypocrite,” the 32-year-old told attendees at the 51st Vodafone Music Awards.
Patel received this year’s Best Urban/Hip Hop Artist award, however refused to accept the accolade while on stage.
Patel won the award for her efforts on the album Brown Girl, that explores her own experience with casual racism while growing up in New Zealand.
“That’s why I’m going to give this away, to people who deserve it. So I’m going to give this award to SWIDT.”
The Hip-Hop group came up on stage and gratefully accepted the accolade, thanking the singer.
Many took to social media to praise the musician for her grace and for her decision to make a poignant point while live on the VNZMA stage.
