The data above is from the Registrar of Unions. While the big fall off in union membership was in the 1990s, it has continued. The percentage of the labour force in a union has gone from 18.5% to just over 15%.
This is fantastic news.
That slight blip in 2009 was when Comrade Kate was the minister of Labour. It is why we ran a campaign to get rid of her.
The actual number of people in a union is even lower when you remove the public sector unions from the chart. They are well below 10% of the private sector workforce.
We can thank Jim Bolger for this. His government passed the Employment Contracts Act which removed compulsory unionism.
The data is incontrovertible now, when people are given a choice of joining a union or not they choose not.
