SPCA publishes List of Shame but doesn’t name anyone

“Cool”, I thought. About time we had public shame as part of the repercussions of wrongdoing.

[SPCA] 2016 List of Shame’s five worst offenders:

1. A Christchurch man was sentenced to 15 months in jail for inflicting injuries on his six month old puppy, including more than 11 fractures to her head, jaw, legs and ribs. She was later euthanised.

2. A Te Kuiti man was sentenced to four months community detention and disqualified from owning dogs for 10 years after witnesses reported seeing him beat his dog, which was found with bruising and swelling.

3. A Horowhenua woman was sentenced to 120 hours community work and disqualified from owning horses for 2 years after her malnourished animal had to be put down for humane reasons.

4. A Shannon man was sentenced to 200 hours community work and disqualified from owning production animals for 5 years after SPCA inspectors found one bull calf dead and a second unable to stand on his property. The second animal was later euthanised.

5. A stray and emaciated puppy was euthanised after being taken into the Rotorua SPCA unable to stand and suffering from the contagious and painful parvovirus. The people responsible have not been found.

So what’s the point?  Not a single person is named.

The New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals released its annual list ahead of its November 7 to 13 fundraising appeal in support of education and rescue efforts.

SPCA acting chief executive Andrea Midgen said the list brought to light “only the tip of the iceberg” in what was a record year for complaints.

Ohhhh, it’s all about the money.

So let’s make it about the scumbag low-lives using Google.

First one:

A violent attack on a six-month-old puppy has resulted in jail time, and a life-time ban from owning animals for a 19-year-old.

Christchurch teen Logan Smoor will spend 15 months in prison for his crimes, which include an assault on a person as well.

Smoor was sentenced today after pleading guilty to several charges including the ill-treatment of animals.

Second one:

A Te Kuiti man was sentenced to four months community detention yesterday for beating his dog so badly that she had blood in her urine.

Tautu Thompson, 23, was convicted today in the Te Kuiti District Court on a charge of wilful ill-treatment of an animal with the result that the animal was seriously injured or impaired. He was sentenced to four months community detention with an 8pm to 5am curfew, disqualified from owning dogs for 10 years, fined $1,500, and ordered to pay veterinary costs of $344.84.

The Judge also ordered that the dog be forfeited to SPCA New Zealand, along with any other dogs currently owned by the defendant.

How about you do 3 through 5 in the comments?   Sadly enough, I nearly got the first one wrong.  Such is the copious supply of animal abusing scumbags in Christchurch

Both Buddy the Labrador puppy and the cruel owner who beat him now have new homes.

Buddy has gone to a happy home where he can live out his days with only three legs, after losing one that was amputated after a prolonged and vicious assault.

The former owner, 26-year-old Christopher John Cross, will be calling Christchurch Men’s Prison home for the next 10 months.

He was upset at finding himself jailed by Christchurch District Court Judge Brian Callaghan today after admitting a charge of wilful illtreatment of an animal.

SPCA prosecutor Ben Vanderkolk called for the prison term to be imposed for the May 12 bashing of the five-month-old puppy at Cross’ Woolston property.

Neighbours recorded the sound of the beating on a cellphone – a recording that showed the beating went on for seven minutes. It includes the sound of a dog’s claws being dragged across the floor, yelling and swearing, cracking sounds, and yelping by Buddy.

The dog’s leg was broken, and it had internal bleeding, lung contusions, and bruising. Mr Vanderkolk said its leg had to be amputated and it had now been rehoused.

So.  That’s how you do a proper list of shame SPCA.
