Why do politicians break the no rooting rule?

An article in the Sydney Morning Herald investigates why politicians are inveterate rooters:

Richard Nixon’s secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, said: ”Power is the great aphrodisiac.” (Although it has to be said his planned seduction of the B-grade movie actor Mamie van Doren went awry when she was repelled by his smelly socks.) He regretted saying that famous bon mot but it’s true. Because political leaders are the alpha males in the community, women are attracted to them, even though the men may be ugly and much older, as was Bill Clinton when he and Monica Lewinsky indulged in kinky cigar sex in the White House.

It’s the same with the recently resigned Italian prime minster, Silvio Berlusconi, whose orgies, or bunga-bunga parties, have become notorious. What repelled many people was the thought of this plump former cruise singer in his 70s, with a rigid, shiny face courtesy of plastic surgery and Botox, bedding teenagers.

But, as I know from my own past, the allure of the dominant male is strong.

A relative of mine was a prim and proper woman and a fanatical Labor supporter. Although she was married, she had flings with a charismatic prime minister and an unappealing but highly intelligent state premier. She not only admired these men but justified her behaviour as a feminine way of supporting the Labor Party.

Many political leaders have had enormous sexual appetites. Chairman Mao Zedong was a legendary sleaze and the recently murdered Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, fuelled by dangerous amounts of Viagra, had sex five times a day with any women his aides could find for him. Mussolini and Napoleon were just as voracious.

The thing is that we might be shocked by the amount of sexual excess but not surprised, which is why it’s strange that we continue to have politicians’ careers ruined or besmirched by sexual allegations.

So it appears that politicians break the no rooting rule because they can.

What appears common to most of these politicians is the risks they take, whether it’s sex in the Oval Office or mooching around for hookers in a Paris park. But then it could be said that most politicians succeed by taking risks.

It’s the nature of politics to gamble on making a grasp for leadership or to outfox one’s opponents with a risky strategy. Fuelled by a lust for power and driven by vast reserves of testosterone, which he needs to make it to the top, the alpha politician regards women as a just and proper reward for someone in his position.

Politics is about power and with it comes the exhilaration of being the dominant male. The risks of discovery these men take in their private lives is a part of the allure of such adventures. The excitement of the risk of being caught is underpinned by their arrogance and feelings of invulnerability, something that was clearly evident in Clinton’s dangerous fling.

But there’s more to it. The art of politics is being able to seduce your backers and the public to vote for you. It’s only a short step to these men thinking it’s only natural that they can also seduce any woman they want. If you believe Tiffanie – and there are many reasons for doing so – then Macdonald said to her: ”If you knew who I was, you would be very surprised.” It sums up both a politician’s massive ego and the thrill of being a powerful man.

Gaddafi copped one in the chook

My faith in the Libyan people has bee restored after it has been revealed that Gaddafi copped one in the chook with a broom handle before being dispatched:

An analysis of video obtained by GlobalPost from a rebel fighter who recorded the moment when Col. Muammar Gaddafi was first captured confirms that another rebel fighter, whose identity is unknown, sodomized the former leader as he was being dragged from the drainpipe where he had taken cover.

A frame by frame analysis of this exclusive GlobalPost video clearly shows the rebel trying to insert some kind of stick or knife into Gaddafi’s rear end.

Yeah, don’t be a brutal dictator who loses power.

Oh boo hoo

The UN is upset Gaddafi got his beans:

“There seem to be four or five different versions of how he died,” said Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. “There are at least two cellphone videos, one showing him alive and one showing him dead. Taken together, these videos are very disturbing.”

Al Jazeera on Gaddafi

A good summary of the life of Muammar al-Gaddafi from Al Jazeera:

A senior National Transitional Council official has said that deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has died of his wounds after being captured near his hometown of Sirte.

Muammar Gaddafi came to power in 1969 in a coup at the age of 27 and went on to rule Libya for 42 years with an iron fist.

He has left Libya in tatters and despite the vast oil wealth, a vast majority of Libyans still live on about $2 a day and 40 per cent remain unemployed.

Gaddafi wanted to be the leader of the Arab world and modeled himself on Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser.

He published the Green Book which established rule of the people but in reality he exercised absolute power.

The former Libyan leader was accused of bombing Pan Am Flight 103 in Scotland, a charge he always denied. After this Libya remained under internatinal isolation for years.

When the uprising gathered momentum earlier this year he blamed everyone, from US to al-Qaeda, and called the protesters rats and cats of Libya.

Many will remember Gaddafi as the leader who set Libya back by many years.

SFO clears Hausmann of wrongdoing

SFO clears Hausmann of wrongdoingThe Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has cleared former Hawke’s Bay District Health Board member Peter Hausmann of any criminal wrongdoing relating to the board’s awarding of health contracts.

[NZ Politics]

Well this is good, now Peter Hausmann is in the clear, who is left in the gun?

Is it Annette “Full moon” King, or David “I’m running the show now” Cunliffe, or Ray Lind.

Craig Foss will reveal more tomorrow.

Cunners in hiding

Peter Hausmann and Government ministers continue to be shown to be cosy little fellows. We saw the other day that Hawke’s Bay District health Board member Peter Hausmann has suggested a few possible scenarios for having the board assembled more to his and the ministers liking.

Today Craig Foss releases the Ministerial reply to Hausmann and again notes that the two of them did not bother to CC the board Chair on the correspondence.

It seems that there were nefarious underminigs going on at the health Board well before Minister Cunliffe rode in on his white stallion.

It seems that it is the Ministers themselves that are in dire need of governance training.

The WellCare company is not mentioned until March 2006, yet this contract was signed and sealed by March/April 2006. Somehow, this is the fault of Kevin Atkinson and he and the rest of the board were sacked.

So in ll instances where a conflict arose Hausmann did declare them but always AFTER the conflict arose. Note also in each and every one of his conflict statements registered after he was appointed he facetiously says in his personal declarations that he should be excluded from any discussion or review of any printed material associated with the Request for Proposal.

Of course he could say that then because he already had a copy of the documents and he had edited them and that was exactly what was issued. From the released emails between him and Chris Clarke which also occurred before these declaration Hausmann was clearly involved in discussions “associated with the Request for Proposal”

BayGate continues on

A couple of excellent articles today in the Herald, the only major MSM outlet prepared to carry on with the searching questions, by Bill Ralston and Fran O’Sullivan.

The State went on the attack last week. Cunliffe felt important and in charge, but they gained no more than uniting The Bay, after he called the board a nest of vipers and HB Today a disgusting little rag or something similar. In fact in November Clark wrote to the board telling them what a great job they are doing (Yes, documents exist to prove it).
What is interesting though is the amount of backflips and flip-flops the Government has performed in this whole debacle:

  • They “do not hold a torch for Peter Hausmann” as opposed to when National repeatedly asked questions about the scandal last year and early this year they defended him to the end.
  • They didn’t sack the board “but rather the previous board” so why hold elections and anyway it is almost entirely the same people!
  • They also sacked the two Maori representatives. Is the Government now saying that those two, men (very good men with integrity) are hopeless and conflicted? If they say all the board had conflicts, then what conflicts, if any, did the State appointed Maori representatives have? The report is silent on this, why is that?
  • They “lost confidence in Kevin Atkinson in 2004″ yet reappointed him in 2005!
  • In one of the articles Ken Douglas notes how he was furious when he saw the first draft (Why was he allowed to see it? Did he sign confidentiality agreements?), and that is why the final report was vicious on Kevin Atkinson! Translated, Healthcare’s lawyers and Hugh Rennie, turned the report around.
  • Note that Ken Douglas conflict declarations with Capital and Coast changed (improved) last year, were they not full in the first instance?
  • Cunliffe now uses the reasons of the report as the reason he sacked the board, yet he went out of his way to say that the 4 concerns he gave the board to react to, which he says they failed, were the reasons. Also how can he have sacked the board for the reasons outlined in the report when he claimed repeatedly in the house that he hadn’t seen it and sacked the Board before the report was released?
  • The Government desperately want this thing to go away. It will not. Not in Parliament, not in the MSM (though TV only interested when Connell is not telling everyone to “piss off”), not in the Blogosphere (where lazy journalists get their stories from) and of course not in the council’s court case.
  • I understand that the council’s case is attracting attention and interest from QC’s who are very interested to take on the case and have this one on their CV’s. I would imagine that Cunliffe has been served papers by now…
  • What of the personal relationships between management and the MOH review team. Any conflicts of interest decleared in the document? No, as they chose not to investigate management (even though the terms of reference enabled them to), so therefore no need to declare any conflicts!
  • There is a very interesting tension here: King wants to tough this out but Cunliffe wants it to go away, and it is he, not King who will appear in Court, re the councils case. Watch Cunliffe check with King for visual acknowledgment as he is making his answers in the house about the previous Minister.

And let us not forget the Whistle Blower and others who were victims and witness to bullying and intimidation pre and post the discovery of the PH-CC emails. Note also that the report said that Hausmann only edited the emails to remove intellectual property of Healthcare. Funny though the emails forensically recovered along with the edited document show exactly the opposite. Hausmann in fact added many lines and the things he removed could not be considered the intellectual property of anyone, let alone Peter Hausmann or Healthcare. Of course the MSM haven’t checked out those documents and have essentially regurgitated the talking points of Cunliffe. Best they take a look at the doc’s huh…the lazy fucks can download it from here. April 2005 RFP and the July 2005 RFP
