I knew nuffink, I was just providing storage…bullshit

Billy Big Steps should get used to wearing orange

This is the standard defence of Kim Dotcom from his apologists and publicists and biographers…it goes something like this.

He is not storing the files, he is providing space with a set of rules to be used. The users of that space have a choice to follow the rules or not and store legitimate data or store illegal files etc.

He receives take down notices and acts on them. What else is he supposed to do?

Would you like Google to shut down as well?

Followed by this:

What do you mean by theft and copyright infringement? Do you also wish for the owners of YouTube to be lynched for providing a medium of copyright infringement? Or are you referring to the false accusations of years ago? About the trial that the US has delayed numerous times, assumingly because they have no real evidence against him after illegally stealing his property under no warrant after bribing Key? Again, I can tell your hearts are in the right place, but your government is the true enemy of the people. NZ, US, wherever. They’re all tyrannies, US especially.   Read more »

US shoots down missile with High Energy Laser [VIDEO]

via Gizmag

Lockheed Martin has released a video of ADAM, its high energy laser (HEL) system, taking out a rocket from a range of 1.5 km (0.9 miles). Slowed down, the 300-fps video clearly shows the laser beam striking and tracking a point towards the front of the rocket, before destroying it mid-flight.

ADAM, which stands for Area Defense Anti-Munitions is a self-contained unit designed to nullify attacks from unmanned aerial vehicles, or improvised rocket attacks from the ground. The intention is that the system will be used to protect vulnerable assets such as military bases near the frontline, acquiring and tracking short-range targets from a distance of 5 km (3.1 miles), and destroying from a range of up to 2 km (1.2 miles).

In the test, which took place April 22, an ADAM prototype takes out a “Qassam-like” rocket. Qassam rockets are artillery munitions used by the military wing of Hamas in attacks against Israel.  Read more »

People are Stupid, Ctd

At times it’s hard the believe the total absence of limits that stupid people appear to operate under:

A northern Indiana man who had the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan campaign logo tattooed onto his face “to make politics fun” says it’s time for it to come off.

Eric Hartsburg of Michigan City, says he plans to have the red-and-blue “R” removed from its prominent place next to his right eye.

He says a Republican supporter paid him US$15,000 (NZ$18,312) to get the tattoo and keep it until at least the election was over.

Weeks after President Barack Obama defeated the former Massachusetts governor in the November 6 election, Hartsburg says “now to me it represents not a losing campaign, but a sore losing campaign.”

Hartsburg says he reached out to the Romney campaign about the tattoo, but feels snubbed that no campaign staffer ever contacted him.

A post for 9/11 truthers

via Boing Boing

For those truthers who for whatever reason still think that something other than a mere plane crash brought down the World Trade Center towers, you could be right, just not about the involvement of Dick Cheney.

“If my theory is correct, tonnes of aluminium ran down through the towers, where the smelt came into contact with a few hundred litres of water,” Christian Simensen, a scientist at SINTEF, an independent technology research institute based in Norway, said in a statement released Wednesday.

“From other disasters and experiments carried out by the aluminium industry, we know that reactions of this sort lead to violent explosions.”

Given the quantities of the molten metal involved, the blasts would have been powerful enough to blow out an entire section of each building, he said. This, in turn, would lead to the top section of each tower to fall down on the sections below.

The sheer weight of the top floors would be enough to crush the lower part of the building like a house of card, he said.

For the technically minded and sanctimonious know it all limp dicks like Lynn Prentice here is a little video about Thermite reactions.

HA! HAR!

Somebody punked the LA City Council with an old Simpson prank.

As Nelson Muntz would say – HA! HAR!

Gun Stocks or Gold?

This article explains how much better off you would be if you had invested in Sturm, Ruger & Co compared to gold.

In the time since he took office, gun sales have soared. The government doesn’t track individual sales. But the FBI criminal background check required to purchase a gun is considered a reasonable proxy, and these have hit record numbers each year Obama has been in office. This year, they’re on track to surpass 15 million for the first time.

Ruger has done especially well. Since Obama’s inauguration the company’s stock price has risen more than 400 percent, making it a better investment than gold, which is up 113 percent. “They’ve been outstanding in offering new products, especially in the concealable handgun segment,” says Jim Barrett, an analyst at CL King who tracks the gun industry and rates the company a “strong buy.”

It also highlights why you would be better off voting for Obama to protect your investment. A Republican president would harm gun sales.

Why isn't New Zealand celebrating the 60th anniversary of signing ANZUS

On 1 September it was the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS treaty.

Today we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS Treaty, which remains a keystone of our relationship with Australia and an enduring force for stability in the wider region.

Few nations share closer ties than Australia and the United States. Australia promptly invoked its alliance obligations following September 11—something Americans will long remember. The brave men and women of our armed forces have fought side by side in every major battle since the First World War. Today, our soldiers, diplomats, and aid workers are working together in Afghanistan. Equally important, we have strengthened our cooperation across other significant challenges – from environmental degradation to our joint commitment to economic development in Africa and the Pacific.

We look forward to welcoming Australian Foreign Minister Rudd, Defense Minister Smith, and their colleagues later this month at the Australia-United States Ministerial (AUSMIN) consultations. AUSMIN will take place at San Francisco’s Presidio complex, where the original ANZUS documents were signed 60 years ago today. We will continue to strengthen this significant alliance in the decades to come.

The only mention of New Zealand in that press release is the two letters in the title of the treaty. With the Wellington Declaration the animosity was supposed to be at an end, looks like the US still doesn’t rate us.

Why the NRA is Great

The NRA are great because they win campaigns. Their latest email to members says:

In the past, we’ve won countless legislative battles against anti-gunners, because politicians know that you’ll vote them out of office if they attack your Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Bill Clinton gave them credit for knocking over the speaker in 1994:

“ The NRA had a great night. They beat both Speaker Tom Foley and Jack Brooks, two of the ablest members of Congress, who had warned me this would happen. Foley was the first Speaker to be defeated in more than a century. Jack Brooks had supported the NRA for years and had led the fight against the assault weapons ban in the House, but as chairman of the Judiciary Committee he had voted for the overall crime bill even after the ban was put into it. The NRA was an unforgiving master: one strike and you’re out. The gun lobby claimed to have defeated nineteen of the twenty-four members on its hit list. They did at least that much damage and could rightly claim to have made Gingrich the House Speaker. ”
—Bill Clinton, My Life pp 629-30

The NRA has 4.3 million members and these members are regularly told which politicians need knocking over. The grass roots are supported by professional campaigners and together they get politicians they don’t like beaten.

In a tight Presidential race in 2012 the way the NRA breaks could be decisive in the end result. Usually they would support the Republican candidate, and they have not liked Obama much, but Obama can point to record gun sales to show he is a pro-gun president.

Fundies are not the smartest people.

Religious protestors drove through Vanderbilt campus Saturday afternoon, preaching the gospel and condemning students for drunken conduct and sinful behavior.

The following video was posted on YouTube by the group Cheap Missions Trips Sunday evening. After circulating on Facebook among the Vanderbilt community, the video appears to have pulled off the Internet by the group.

InsideVandy managed to download the video before it was deleted and presents it here in its entirety:
