Clapped out Iranian ship ‘menacing’ US shores

Some ships from the Iranian Navy are currently marauding in the Atlantic Ocean in a deployment that is a supposedly response to U.S. naval deployments near Iran’s coastlines and they are sending a message.

In other news the Afghan Air Force are going to fly their stealth bombers to the edge of US airspace just to add to the tension.

This must be a worrying time for the seppos,  we should offer our air combat wing in case they need some back up.

Iranian warships dispatched to the Atlantic Ocean will travel close to U.S. maritime borders for the first time in a bid to send ‘a message’ to the White House.  Read more »

Yeah, of course it was accidental

A Thai politician has ‘accidentally’ shot and killed his ex-wife while dining at a restaurant with her…yeah..I believe him, he’s a politician after all:

A Thai politician accidentally shot and killed his former wife and personal secretary with a submachine gun in a restaurant in northern Thailand, local police said Monday.

Senator Boonsong Kowawisarat was dining with Chanakarn Detkard and four others on Sunday when he took out an Uzi 9mm sub-machine gun, police said.

“Senator Boonsong’s gun was accidentally fired off while he was trying to keep his pistol into its case. The shot went straight into his secretary who was having dinner,” Police Lt. Colonel Choosak Pulsawat told CNN.

The police officer said that Boonsong had been separated from his wife for a while but they were currently living together.

He added that Boonsong had permission to own such a weapon.

Police have initially charged Boonsong with causing death by negligence but he cannot be arrested while the Thai parliament is in session — unless the parliament rules otherwise.

The Bangkok Post said the charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and a 20,000 baht fine (US$640).

The newspaper said that Boonsong was so shocked by the shooting that he was unable to take Chanakarn to hospital.

It is not clear why he was armed, why he took the weapon into the restaurant or whether he knew the gun was loaded.

Hmmm…bet he cops to the fine.

Why shooting guns is fun

ᔄ Sydney Morning Herald

A journalist finds out exactly why shooting guns is so much fun:

“OK,” Brandon yelled, “have you ever fired a machine gun before?”

“No.”

“That’s all right. This is an AK-47, I’m gonna take you through it.”

So he handed me this huge weapon, and that’s when it got weird. I don’t really like guns, I don’t think anyone should be allowed to own guns, I don’t see the fascination in guns, and BOOM! I’d just fired a shot! There was a small hole a few centimetres from the centre of the target, and BOOM! I’d fired another! This was incredible!

Brandon grinned and switched the gun to automatic, braced me with a hand on my shoulder, and yelled at me to fire. Rat-a-tat-tat! Now there were about a million little holes in the paper target, spread around haphazardly, and the gun was still bucking and shuddering in my hands.

Suddenly I was Rambo, I was John Wayne, I was the Terminator. I was blasting away like nobody’s business, and wow, I was having fun.

The M4 was next, with similar results – a wildly random pattern of bullet holes and a freshly crowned Aussie gun nut. The Uzi was ridiculous, this snub-nosed thing that fires out ammo with incredible speed. The bullets were still going all over the place, but who cares? I was owning this thing, until… click, click. I was out of ammo.

Brandon patted me on the back. “Do you want a photo with your firearm?” he asked.

Ha, I’m thinking, you mean one of those cringeworthy shots you always see of insecure blokes clutching onto their makeshift manhood?

“Absolutely!”

So I got the photo. And then I left. I’m still no gun nut. But I’d seen another side of the US that day, and it was kind of fun. I can see why those swimmers were into it.
