Google Bids to Make San Francisco a WiFi Hotspot

[Imported from Whale Oil Beef Hooked on Blogger]

Again from the LA Times.

Google Inc. wants to connect all of San Francisco to the Internet with a free wireless service, creating a springboard for the online search engine leader to leap into the telecommunications industry.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company filed an application late Friday to provide a wireless, or “WiFi,” service that would enable anyone in San Francisco to connect to the Internet.

Watch out world here comes Google. The only company that has the arsenal (cash) to take on Microsoft and win.

I have always rated Google. I can remember recommending to my mates to use Google when they were still searching with AltaVista and Yahoo. They thought I was crazy then….now all they use is Google. Google is placing some serious paradigm shifting technologies out into the world.

I now use several of Google’s “Labs” products and almost couldn’t do with out them. Google Desktop makes finding anything on my HDD a doddle where before it was a serious pain in the arse. Gmail rocks…I have converted most of my friends to using it and they all report that will now no longer use Outlook, or any other mail system, web-based or otherwise.

Of course I use Blogger which is another from the Google stable.

Google has also released a web accelerator which I am testing. So far it looks good, particularly if you access a lot of US based sites. also you can personalise your homepage and utilise a personal search service.

Of course there is also Google Earth…which could be useful, just haven’t worked out how yet, but it is fun to play with.

And don’t forget the VOIP space….yes Google is there too!!

I know this all sounds like a Google advert, but the simple truth is that Google makes simple and useful tools that make your life online easier not harder.

As much at home writing editorials as being the subject of them, Cam has won awards, including the Canon Media Award for his work on the Len Brown/Bevan Chuang story. When he’s not creating the news, he tends to be in it, with protagonists using the courts, media and social media to deliver financial as well as death threats.

They say that news is something that someone, somewhere, wants kept quiet. Cam Slater doesn’t do quiet and, as a result, he is a polarising, controversial but highly effective journalist who takes no prisoners.

He is fearless in his pursuit of a story.
