Peachey gets his first slapping

Allan Peachy just scored a slapping in Parliament from Steve Maharey and, I have to say, he deserved it. We’re always quick to point out when one of the Government MPs stuff up, but this time it was someone from our side of the fence.

Peachy, as readers will recall, sent an email to Selwyn College co-Principal in which he signed off as "Yes, I do still have a knife in your back".

What Peachey did was just plain dumb and something he should have thought about before he pressed send. It will be something he will never forget and should hopefully learn from, but it is something that the Labour Party will never let him forget either.

Peachey is a highly regarded educator and would certainly have made a good Minister of Education in a future National Government. This incident will dog him into the future and we can just imagine the type of supplementary questions he’d get:

"Is the minister applying a policy of equal treatment of all NZ secondary schools, or is he standing by his statements made on 3 November 2005 by holding a knife to the back of Auckland’s Selwyn College"?

It is good to see, however that Peachey was brave enough to stand up in Parliament and admit his mistakes in front of the country. You would never see the likes of David Benson-Pope or Helen Clark doing such a thing and that is testament to the calibre of National MPs versus that of the Government.
