Posting Policy

Posting Policy (shamelessly borrowed from David Farrar)

  • Who has the right to post comments on this blog?

Apart from the authors/owners, no-one at all has the right to post comments. Posting is a privilege, not a right.

  • Okay, so who is allowed to post comments here?

Anyone at all, up until the stage I ask them to stop. I welcome comments, and they add a lot of enjoyment to the blog for myself, and I am sure others. Advertising spam however is always unwelcome and is deleted and blacklisted on a regular basis.

  • Have you ever banned anyone from posting?

Nope not yet, probably won’t ever, you see we don’t actually care what you think about us.

  • What is the easiest way to get banned?

To attack us personally, with unreasoned foul language. Quite simply it will not be tolerated. I welcome people to disagree with my views, to correct our errors, to debate what we assert, but if you attack our integrity, our character etc W’ll rescind your posting privileges. You are welcome to go to any of the other 1.5 billion pages on the Internet and attack us on those. You can even set up your own blog for free dedicated to attacking us, but on this blog which we own and pay for, it is a no go.

  • Are there any exceptions to not attacking you personally?

Yes, my friends are always welcome to mock us, humiliate us, lower our standing and generally abuse the crap out of us. Of course we will always reataliate using the principle of controlled escalation Smile

  • So how do I know if I am a friend or not?

Trust us, you will know.

  • Is there anything else I should avoid doing when posting comments?

Yes, we would appreciate it if people can avoid:

  •     breaking court suppression orders
  •     defamation
  •     anything else which can get us arrested or fined
  • And other things to be careful of?
  •     grossly offensive personal attacks on other posters (use humour and sarcasm instead)
  •     posting off-topic. Threads will drift and this is natural, but if we post about a nice summer’s day in Auckland, We sure as hell don’t want to read “Yeah but nasty Politician A is a racist and cheated on his ex-wife”
  •     Un-necessarily obscene language. It’s not that it offends us, but a number of people who read the blog at work complain when Net Nanny bans us for a period.
  • So how do you ban people from posting?

Well we have never done it, but rest assured we will know you IP address as well we use a registration system. If you become banned we will not inform you we will just do it. Don’t worry it will be temporary. Just because they are physically not barred from posting does not mean they have the right to do so. Just like it is not okay to walk inside someone’s house, just because the door is open. If someone whom we have banned refuses to stop posting we will inform their ISP that they are (as they inevitably are) breaching the ISP’s acceptable use policy. And we will delete their comments, after backing them up for future reference.

  • Any final comments?

Yep 99% of this is common sense, so don’t get silly and check it regularly to see if what you are posting is okay. We’ll let people know if there is a problem, and with the vast majority of posters they add huge value to the blog, so don’t stop commenting.
