Not content with rooting everything he touchs in government it is rumoured that Steve Maharey is lining up a cushy job for himself as vice-chancellor at Massey University where he will have a whole new world to take his reverse Midas touch to.

This is clearly the case of rats leaving the rapidly sinking ship. Seeing no prospect of advancement as each of his portfolios delivers cock-up after cock-up and the electoral prospects of Labour are so dim they wouldn't light up the inside of a coke can, Maharey has obviously found a life raft.
