Is Rico racist and sexist?

The state owned airline has launched a new mascot and ad campaign featuring “Rico“.

“Rico” seems to be a foreigner talking about his holidays in New Zealand and mocking the way foreigners speak and talk and jumbled up english with blatant sexual overtones.

Now colour me surprised, but have’nt we all just had a major episode of finding racism in comments by a person about fat indians and how they look and speak?

I think we did. We even had a union campaiging for a worker to be sacked.

Now the state airline is running an ad campaign mocking the crap out of foreigners…and this is supposed to work how for tourism?

What will be funny is watching people who frothed all over Paul Henry now gush endlessly about how funny these adverts are and how in-offensive a puppet is saying that all he needs now is a “nice kiwi bitch”.

The ads are funny, but they highlight the huge hypocrisy over over Paul Henry’s humour. Will we see Unite union campaigning for the sacking of Air New Zealand’s CEO? Somehow I think not.

As much at home writing editorials as being the subject of them, Cam has won awards, including the Canon Media Award for his work on the Len Brown/Bevan Chuang story.  And when he’s not creating the news, he tends to be in it, with protagonists using the courts, media and social media to deliver financial as well as death threats.

They say that news is something that someone, somewhere, wants kept quiet.   Cam Slater doesn’t do quiet, and as a result he is a polarising, controversial but highly effective journalist that takes no prisoners.

He is fearless in his pursuit of a story.
