Dalai Lama on Guns

“If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.”

The Dalai Lama, (May 15, 2001, The Seattle Times) speaking at the “Educating Heart Summit” in Portland, Oregon, when asked by a girl how to react when a shooter takes aim at a classmate.

Would bank staff having guns reduce the number of bank robberies? Would Mr Miet be alive today if he had a gun when Dean Wickliffe held up his jewellers shop. Would this Auckland pharmacist have achieved a better outcome if he had a gun? I doubt it. The Auckland gun shop incident was a freak occurrance despite its best possible outcome (ie the assistant was not hurt, the accused suffered relatively minor injuries and no hand guns were stolen).

Banks having guns was OK in the Otago gold rush era and this continued until the mid 20th Century when some idiotic bank officer played Russian Roulette with a bank revolver. We are in the 21st Century now – I for one do not want the bother of having to keep a handgun for self defence.

    • You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but i for one would like the choice.
